Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, May 7-9

HanleyBTS480.jpg

Thursday was a beautiful day in the neighborhood for our Beat the Streakers.

Our top five most popular selections each got hits, combining to extend the streaks for about 35 percent of Streakland.

Dustin Pedroia, my, ahem, Pick of the Day, spearheaded “Operation: Hitsville,” going 2-for-4 to extend the streaks of 12.3 percent of our users all by his lonesome self.

It was also all sunshine atop the leaderboard, as “olifante” and “bowl218” each lived to see another day thanks to hits from Evan Longoria and Placido Polanco, respectively.

With “olifante”‘s streak now at 33 games, he is 57.9 percent on his way to the promised land. And you know what that means: All the infomercial knives that can cut through shoes that he ever dreamed of.

Will our fearless leader survive the weekend?

I have no clue. But I might as well give it a whirl …

Oh, hello there …

Saturday

Sunday

  • Gabe Kapler: .444 AVG (4-for-9) lifetime vs. A’s starter Dallas Braden. Yes, starting sentences this way is getting to be painful.

You’ll thank me later …

Friday

  • Adam Lind: .000 AVG (0-for-12) lifetime vs. White Sox starter Mark Buehrle

Leaderboard time!

Joining “olifante” and “bowl218” in the 30-streak club is “cruj,” who took Justin Morneau yesterday to reach this lovely milestone. Well played.

    Going with Hanley Ramirez today.
Saturday: Ichirio v. lefty – To M’s manager – how about giving The Man from Japan the day off?
Stay away from Cubs – struggling badly – even with Homer Bailey on the mound for Reds I’m staying away.

  2. vinny1979

I have Ryan Braun in BTS tonight as the Blog guy said you can pick anybody against Edwin Jackson right now. Drag, who do you suggest for HR BTS so that I can continue at 2. I first had Wright but Sanchez hasn’t given up a HR all year. I did had Pujols but wind is blowing in at Pitts. I now am going with Cano as wind is blowing out at Boston to right field. Should I change Cano or leave it? Also I have the Cards in Survivor to try to get my streak started again thanks to the O’s winning and costing me my 3 game streak there. I’m hoping to get to four with Braun tonight.

  3. vinny1979

There is one drawback to picking Braun tonight for me though and that is he is hitting .118 at Arizona in his career but first time he is facing Jackson in his career so still thinking hard about that one.

  4. backrubs

well, this is the first time this year i have had two straight days of my picked hitter NOT get a hit.

  5. dragbunt104

Vinny – I have Cards in Survivor.
HR BTS – tough call today – My streak as usual is zero – For no good reason I have Cubs D. Lee (crosswind in Cincy). I like your thoughts on wind at Fenway and Cano is hot.

  6. vinny1979

  8. rip2thecompetition

I’m going with Ryan Theriot. I know the Cubs bats have cooled down but I believe it’s about the player, not the team, & Theriot is still swinging the bat well.

  9. vinny1979

Drag, I wouldn’t even touch Ichiro tomorrow. He is hitting .158 against lefties this year and M’s are facing Saunders tomorrow so I don’t think so. It’s the same thing with Hanley. He’s hitting lefties .172 and that isn’t something I would go near but he looks good tonight. Only drawback is Hanley is hitting .261 on the road this year.

  10. rip2thecompetition

Go with whoever you think you have the best shot with, regardless of what time they play. Believe me, in past seasons I’ve done stupid things like picking a guy just because he was playing early (I hate waiting too) just to see him not get a hit.

  11. danpranka@newenglandsportstours.com

Vinny & Dragbunt…. Regarding the wind at Fenway… forecast is to have clouds coming in early evening and as a matter of fact they are starting to show up and that wind will die down to right field…Last night the wind did come into play, also I think that Beckett may be due for a good game…. Only my thoughts… haveing a rough time getting back to 4 where I have been killed several times… going with Hanley tonight…LOL

  12. vinny1979

I think I have a great shot with Braun as he is roping the ball on the road but like I said he is only hitting .118 at Arizona in his career and that by itself is making me think.

  13. danpranka@newenglandsportstours.com

Vinny… I am not in the home run gig this year… maybe I should look at it… I spend about 30 minutes just to come up with a player now….so may as well have another contest to have my heart broken… I have taken the Cards today in the surviors series… Today is only my second day, yesterday took the Phillies…. RE: the weather here… as I look out my window the trees are barely moving and the sky is pretty much a thin overcast… I hope this helps. but since I have gotten to eight and to four several times my picks are just about as good as yours and others…. Like I mentioned I have Hanley tonight…LOL

  14. vinny1979

It’s cool man. That’s fine. I think I’ll stick it out with Cano anyway. Also, Bal/Min is postponed because of rain. I bet Twins miss the Metrodome now since that is their first postponement because of the weather. So nobody should be picking anybody in that game tonight.

  15. dragbunt104

Vinny – if game in Minn is postponed and you are not sure of your HR pick tonight go with a Twin player and pass your streak over until Saturday.

  16. vinny1979

Sounds like a plan but let’s see if I can do it. Tomorrow I have Wright against the Giants.

  17. vinny1979

It’s too late as that isn’t even an option anymore. Took off the Bal/Min game already.

  18. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

Survivor: Chris Carpenter and the St Louis Cardinals over Zach Duke and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

    Beat The Streak: Albert Pujols

  19. vinny1979

Good luck to you Joe as I know you will get to 10 in Survivor and backrubs is already at 10 I can’t believe it.

  20. vinny1979

Lost my win streak when the Twins lost yesterday so back at 0 and my hit streak is at 3 so far and have Braun tonight.

  21. rip2thecompetition

Theriot came through. I think I may have survived the Friday Night Massacre. Lots of people relying on last at-bats.

  22. vinny1979

Oh man. Hanley was just walked intentionally so I think that’s his last plate appearance. 0-3 with a walk.

  23. kenfucious

Wow, tonight may completely upend the leaderboard. If Hanley is through, great runs for Olifante and bowl. Cruj’s Braun pick TBD.

  24. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I wonder if Braun will be included in the 50% off BTS shaver sale going on right now.

  25. vinny1979

I need Braun to get a hit so I can go up to a 4 game streak. 17 out of 25 on the top page all done with Pujols and Ramirez.

  26. backrubs

The leader on Survivor is done at 17 because he took Washingon and they lost to FLA
Noticed alot of people took the Twins who had their game rained out this evening. and St Louis survives, im at 11

  27. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

Albert Pujols went 0-5 tonight, but at least the Cardinals got the win over the Pirates just now.

That game was a real nail biter, too.

So I’m back to a 0 game hit streak, but I now got a 10 game win streak.

  28. vinny1979

My win streak in Survivor is back at 1 so I’m happy about that. Tomorrow I have the Tigers unless that is turned into a double header if they don’t restart tonight’s game.

  29. vinny1979

Joe, stay away from Ichiro. I have Cabrera to hopefully get to 5 if Braun comes through tonight.

  30. schenk015

it wouldnt be considered a doubleheader if the game gets suspended to tomorrow because part of it has already been played.

  31. oneheartbeataway

wow what a disaster day for the BTS boys. hanley, pujols, jeter, and cano all hitless. close to 50% done with those picks, congratulations my former running mate cruj for selected Braun and dodging the enormous bullet that hit everyone else. This is why the prize is up to 3 million, it’s not quite as easy as it sounds to get to 57.

  32. vinny1979

It hasn’t listed the Tigers/Indians game as a doubleheader tomorrow so hopefully it won’t be one and I can leave Cabrera and Tigers as my choices tomorrow.

  33. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

    Vinny,

“Because Friday’s action will be stricken from the record, the Tribe and Tigers will have to replay the game in its entirety. A rescheduled date was not immediately announced. But the rescheduled date will definitively not be played this weekend. ”

Got it from the Tigers website.

  34. vinny1979

Thank you very much for the info Joe. I appreciate it and makes me feel better about my picks for tomorrow. I have Cabrera in BTS to try to get me to 5 and the Tigers in Survivor.

  35. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

I’m also picking the Tigers for tomorrow, but I haven’t decided on who I will picking for tomorrow to get a hit yet.

  36. baileys1219

Miguel Cabrera hit a home run in last nights game, then the game was postponed, that hit doesn’t count?

  37. dave55

No, unfortunately Cabrera’s HR does not count. I can confirm because I picked him and am now at zero.

  38. danpranka@newenglandsportstours.com

Vinny… I see you made a change from Cano to Braun…. nice switch.. Hanley did me in along with a lot of others…Got to think about today… FYI game in Boston will possible have a delay in starting due to rain & thunderstorms this morning & afternoon but do expect to get it in… winds will increase from the northwest so should help to get a few balls out of the park….LOL ALL

  39. izzyw1zzy@yahoo.com

Hey the Wizz makes his triumphant reappearance to tell folks that Utley isn’t starting today (sat)… making his chances of Pinch hitting high….I found out literally two seconds ago, and maybe I’ll save some streaks today…?

    –the wizz.

  40. dave55

With the wind blowing at 30-40 mph to right field in Detroit, I am going with Brennan Boesch in HR BTS. Hopefully the rain will move out soon.

  41. schenk015

ngedjc im not sure if your aware of this but the game is being played in cleveland not detroit so dont bother looking at the direction of the wind in detroit because that wont help you any

  42. dragbunt104

The winds of change may be blowing in Cleveland! Cabrera is doing an 0-fer. I wish I would have had time to post my pick of the day, Cabrera, before the game locked in today so maybe cruj would have seen that I took Cabrera. He could have chosen someone else so I would’nt infect him.
I may have to put myself on the DL in my picks get any worse.

  43. backrubs

Interesting. these is who the people above 20 took
Miguel Cabrera, Derek Jeter, Albert Pujols, Ichiro Suzuki, Ian Kinsler, Hanley Ramirez, Vladimir Guerrero, Vladimir Guerrero, David Freese, David Wright.

Ten people and only two are the same.. this could get fun before the day is over with

  44. backrubs

it looks like susvivor leader board could be in for some shaking too. someone took minnesota abnd forgot it was a DH. then you have people taking FLA and DET and both teams are tied as i type

  45. schenk015

the people taking florida will eventually realize that washington isnt as bad as they were last year. they have improved a whole lot and its not a near sure win to pick against them this year.

  46. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

Baltimore Orioles just beat the Minnesota Twins in there first game of there double header, 7-3.

  47. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

Miguel Cabrera goes 1-3 ( with 2 walks ) and the Detroit Tigers win.

I now got a 1 game hit streak and an 11 game win streak !

  48. lavolpe

Anyone else getting errors on the “pick a team” page of the Survivor game? It started generating errors for me yesterday and I couldn’t pick a team. Luckily I picked a few days in advance. But I don’t know if I picked one for tomorrow and can’t get the screen to pick a team. If anyone is getting the same error and figured out how to fix it, please let us know. P.S. Tried reboots, clearing cookies/history, all to no avail.

  49. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

I always get a blank white page and have to refresh like a dozen times, get’s annoying after a while.

  50. schenk015

my streak is to 5 with miggy’s hit today. taking chris young tomorrow and the dbacks to extend my hit and win streaks

  51. oneheartbeataway

I am also getting the error message on the Survivor pick a team page i have 6 picks in advance but I want to change some of them now that I have a 9 game streak. Yo MLB.com please fix this problem.

  52. vinny1979

Hey guys, I worked a double shift yesterday but I’m back for today. I have the Nats in Survivor as Livan is pitching so I feel good about that. I have Jeter in BTS to try to get to 6 and I have Pujols in HR BTS. Good luck to all today.

  53. lavolpe

oneheartbeataway. Nice to know it is not just me, but today, the error continues. I have a pick in advance for today, though I couldn’t change it if I wanted to. And I don’t know when my advanced picks will be used up. This is really wrong — with a chance to win $10K, the error is in effect forcing you to a no-pick if you don’t have advanced picks. If we are having the problem, I’m sure 100’s, 1000’s of others are too; what a way to have your streak end — due to technical difficulties.

  54. vinny1979

I’m not having a problem with Survivor right now. Just refresh and check it. I’m sure it’s something minor.

  55. lavolpe

Vinny, only if it was that simple. Of course we tried to refresh & earlier post I mentioned I even tried clearing cookies/history. This has been happening for 3 straight days now!!!! I’ve tried to log in on other machines in my house — same problem. Not sure if logging in on another machine outside of my house will solve the problem and if not — error must be related to my account I would think since that would be the only common factor. Anyway, I was reset with the Cards yesterday; but I sure would have chosen a different team today if I could’ve. As is I got Blue Jays but I wanted to change to the Phils, but could not.

  56. vinny1979

I’m sorry than lavol. You should email MLB to see what is wrong. I have the Nationals today and Cards was a good pick as Garcia was pitching but Pirates just got lucky.

  57. lavolpe

FYI. I just tried using FireFox and also IE8. Error continues, so probably not browser-related. oneheartbeataway, if you find the answer, please post. Curious if error goes away after my last advance pick is used up? If so, no more advance picks for me.

  58. backrubs62

as of yet, im not having that problem.
do you empty out your temp internet files and all that stuff!? dont know if that will help or not, but ya never know

  59. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

Albert Pujols goes 1-3 with 3 walks and the St Louis Cardinals win 11-2, this afternoon.

I now got a 2 game hit streak and a 12 game win streak !

  60. vinny1979

I’m sweating it out with the Nats right now. They are up 2-1 after the top half of the 7th and Hernandez is more than likely coming out of the game after that inning.

  61. oneheartbeataway

Hey Lavol there is definitely something wrong with our accounts. I just logged on with another account and it works fine, so I’m gonna email mlb.com, if I can find their email. Anyway minnesota is looking good to extend me to 10 I have 5 more advance picks, but ill have to have it fixed by then.

  62. vinny1979

Man, I wonder where everybody is today. I understand it’s Mother’s Day but the blog is dead today. Well a Perfect Game was thrown against the Rays again and now somebody may have the cycle.

  63. dave55

There was a cyclle yesterday (Jody Gerut) and now a perfect game the next day. That has to be a first.

My condolences to joyaga, whose streak was ended by Mr. Braden. 😉

  64. vinny1979

Joe, I have the Rays as Garza is pitching and he’s been pitching good or you can choose the Tigers against the Yanks as Vasquez sucks.

  65. josephcarlmoratto@yahoo.com

I’m a Yankees fan, so I won’t ever pick against the Yankees and I try not to choose the Rays to win, lol.

  66. vinny1979

LOL. Good to know Joe. I’m a Yankee fan myself and don’t pick against them either. LOL. I’m just hoping Jeter gets himself a hit tonight to get my hitting streak up to 6.

  67. vinny1979

Back to the drawing board on this name since Jeter didn’t get a hit tonight but my other name I’m at 2 so maybe I can get something going with that one.

  68. dragbunt104

Again, for the sake of the bloggers I’m posting my pick after the game closed for the day it is Jayson Wertn.
I’m trying a new method in Survivior: I picked 10 days into the future and we will see what happens. My results here will have to be an improvement over my past performance!
Take a look at Monday 5/24 – There are only 4 games that day. It will be interesting.
    Good luck to all today.
Zimmerman, Teixeria also looked good today.
