Beat the Streak Report: Tuesday, May 25

Thumbnail image for young480.jpg

We might just get off this island, after all.

Despite a seemingly insurmountable hurdle of a four-game Monday, our fearless streakers prevailed in spades.

Eight of our top nine most popular selections each got hits, combining to extend the streaks of about 65 percent of our users combined.

Atta boy!

Is it possible that those in Streakland become more focused when their selection pool shrinks by 75 percent?

Is it possible that the real reason Monday was Funday was because both Albert Pujols and Derek Jeter, the game’s biggest messengers of doom, had days off?

Is it possible that Jack, Hurley, Locke & co. all died in the initial plane crash in Season 1 and the entire series of Lost was just an account of purgatories and sideways purgatories?

Alright, that’s enough …

Time for Tuesday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Dustin Pedroia: .462 AVG (12-for-26) lifetime vs. Rays starter James Shields

? Joe Mauer: .467 AVG (7-for-15) lifetime vs. Yankees starter A.J. Burnett

? Ichiro Suzuki: .424 AVG (14-for-33) lifetime vs. Tigers starter Justin Verlander

? Michael Young: .383 AVG (18-for-47) lifetime vs. Royals starter Gil Meche

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Humberto Quintero: .667 AVG (4-for-6) lifetime vs. Brewers starter Randy Wolf. Check, please!

You’ll thank me later …

? Nick Markakis: .071 AVG (1-for-14) lifetime vs. Athletics starter Dallas Braden

? Kevin Youkilis: .115 AVG (3-for-26) lifetime vs. Rays starter James Shields

? Joey Votto: .077 AVG (1-for-13) lifetime vs. Reds starter Paul Maholm

Leaderboard time!

Alex “hey, all my former teammates in Toronto are going absolutely bonkers at the plate, so I’ll follow suit and go on a tear even though my newish teammates in Chicago have been colder than Siberia on a Thursday night in December” Rios went 1-for-4 to extend the streak of our leader, “postbud32”, to 25 games.

“postbud32” is now 43.8 percent on his/her way to buying as many of these that exist in the whole wide world.

Because why not? Right?

Top MLB streakers

? Travis Hafner: 11 games

? Jeff Mathis: 10 games (DL)

? Alex Gonzalez: 10 games

? Torii Hunter: 10 games

? Adam Jones: 10 games

? Michael Young: 10 games

taking placido polanco today against dickey. dickey wont last long so if the phils can get to him early polanco will also get a few chances against the mets hittable bullpen

  2. dragbunt104

Beware: Dickey is a knucleball pitcher.
Michael Young looks to good to be true to pick today – What the heck – I’m going with him.
    Vlad in HR BTS
    Reds in Survivor

  3. vinny1979

Well, I have Michael Young today after switching from Tex. Tex hits Baker great but he’s in a slump so not going that route. Young is hotter than hot right now but I like the numbers. Also I have Wells in HR BTS as wind is blowing towards that way in Anaheim and Reds in Survivor to try to get to 4 in Survivor.

  4. goober85

I don’t know if I should go with Cano or M. Young. Both are really hot right now and they both have great numbers against the starting pitchers. I think I’m going to go with Cano though because I like the lefty-righty match-up. What does everyone else think?

  5. dragbunt104

schenk – Don’t give up on Survivor – Do what I do now after getting nowhere. Pick 10 days in advance and see what happens – you never know. Stay away from the important games like TB, NYY, Boston, Phil and go with secondary teams or pick your home town team to win 10 days in a row.
It could happen (well maybe not in KC or Baltimore!)

  6. patnick98@msn.com

i got a 2 game hr streak thanx to drew stubbs yesterday picking josh willingham today, goin with ryan zimmerman to give me a 10 game hit streak and i dont play survivor

  7. patnick98@msn.com

just switched my hit pick from zimmerman to nelson cruz. Hes 6-8 lifetime against meche!

  8. vinny1979

So you have Willingham huh Patnick? I think I may switch to him for tonight as well to try to get back to 1 in HR BTS.

  9. abk1087@hotmail.com

I have Michael Young in BTS and the Rangers in survivor.(HINT: I’m really good in survivor 🙂 )

  10. bye.buy@hotmail.com

Thanks for all the good imput. I think im going to pick jeter, to try get my streak to 21.

  11. bye.buy@hotmail.com

Just an fyi its raining here in Kansas city, im hoping to go to the game if it stops.

  12. bye.buy@hotmail.com

Why? He hit the ball hard 4 times in his last game!! I don’t know much about this game i really just got lucky. I went out of town and picked 10 and 9 got a hit and one did’t have an at bat.

  13. bye.buy@hotmail.com

I don’t think the game in KC will get canceled but there will probably be a rain delay. its raining hard.

  14. bye.buy@hotmail.com

watching local weather and they say the rain shouldnt effect the game tonight, maybe just start 10-30 min later.

  15. abk1087@hotmail.com

i wouldnt go with either one..longoria got a hit for me yesterday at his first at bat, but i dont think he will get a hit today

  16. schenk015

switching my pick to cano. baker’s giving up a lot of hits and cano has just been on fire this entire year.

  17. bye.buy@hotmail.com

Just fyi Gil meche in his last two starts only allowed
    4hits and 5hits.
and the game before that against tx 6 hits and michael young was not one of those hits he was 0-3

  18. schenk015

and its much safer to take cano today than yound who was previous stated to have gone 0-3 earlier this year against meche

  19. vinny1979

I have Young and I know he is going to do well tonight. Last games don’t really matter as he has been doing awesome lately.

  20. abk1087@hotmail.com

I have a feeling I will regret switching from young to cano…oh well, my streak is at 1 right now anyway. i just hope texas wins tonite!!! good luck to all and goodnite!

  21. leeungaretta@hotmail.com

schenk015, I don’t think Cano is all that risky, but I looked at his game log today — bored at work — and noticed a lot of his O-fer’s this year came after a day off, but I took Ich vs. Verlander, so I’m probably much higher on the Risk-O-Meter.

  22. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I am surprised @ lack of love for Pedroia today. He finally broke out of his slump yesterday. Only thing not matching perfect situation was that he does not hit RHP as well at night on the road.

I am surprised at love for Young and Suzuki. Young is on the road where he is not as hot and he has been way too hot.

I am sure all BTS veterans know the near impossibility of picking off day is what kills all of us. Actually, that and avoiding freak events (see Votto). Finding someone with perfect stats matching up is the easy part. Was it 2 days ago when everyone in the Twins line-up got a hit in the batting practive except Mauer? That happened to me so many times already.

I’m hoping Elvis Andrus (TEX) gets me to 14 tonight. Had Cano, but switched it. LAD in Survivor and Willingham in HR Derby. Good Luck everyone!!!

  26. jvairo_11@yyhmail.com

“i have official given up on survivor. 7 straight days with a loss. im sticking to just bts.”

That is good. Just stay on it. Eventually, the pendulum will swing the other way and you will get scorching hot.

I remember the same thing last June when I only won about 28% of my games between May 15-June 15 and then won 27 of 30, including 22 in a row, to smash my old career mark of 17.

I ended up losing the 22-game run on a 3-run blown save by Papelbon in a game the Red Sox lost in extra innings.

  27. champion_88

Are there really 2 20-game hit streak people in 1 family here, when only like 12 people in the entire contest are currently at 20+?

  28. lavolpe

@deb23: Unless pulled for another player and KC getting 9 straight outs, Andrus will get 2 more at bats.

  29. champion_88

“Why? He hit the ball hard 4 times in his last game!! I don’t know much about this game i really just got lucky. I went out of town and picked 10 and 9 got a hit and one did’t have an at bat.”

I wouldn’t come on here until picks are already locked.

Otherwise, you flip-flop all the time.

This page is more useful to learn why people pick certain players and taking those lessons into your own analysis, than to help day of game.

An exception obviously is if you are really busy 1 day and do not want to make a terrible pick.

  30. champion_88

“guys yadier molina is 5-5 against garland…”

I normally stay away from guys with extremely high averages against the opposing starter, because I feel the starter will pitch around them and even if they do not, it seems like they are due for an 0 for, to balance things out.

For example, even if Molina goes 0 for 4, he would still be hitting .556! against Garland.

And Garland has been pitching really well lately anyway.

  31. champion_88

“Was it 2 days ago when everyone in the Twins line-up got a hit in the batting practive except Mauer? That happened to me so many times already.”

I had him that day and was even more annoyed because I backed off Morneau just because he was 1 for 5 against the opposing SP

  32. champion_88

    “Player, Times Picked, Pct
    Michael Young, 326, 13.04
    Ichiro Suzuki, 251, 10.04

    Mark Teixeira, 60, 2.4
    Jimmy Rollins, 50, 2
    Ian Kinsler, 49, 1.96”

Why would 60 people pick Mark Teixeira, who is hitting .205?

  33. patnick98@msn.com

hamilton and cruz back to back and belly to belly cruz homers as well and i have a 10 game hit streak now

  34. yanksgiantsdevils33

Polanco singled in the 5th so I’m at 2. But the Reds are losing 1-0 to the Pirates in the 8th inning I’m trying to get to 4 on survivor.

  35. champion_88

wow, for those who had Andrus and watchong MLB.com Gameday, that was a heartbreaker: “in play – no out record”…………………”Elvis Andrus reaches on fielding error.”

  36. nymets1979

I just can’t catch a break. I pick M Young and so far nothing. I pick him because of how well he’s done as of late and tonight 0-3. He will hopefully have 2 more AB’s and if he pulls an Alex Rios and gets a hit in his last AB, I’d be fine with that. Come on Young!!

  37. deb23

@Champion: Yes, my 13-streak heart is breaking over that fielding error. I saw it on TV and it was clearly a hit…not really, but I’m desperate at this point with 3 ABs and 0 hits.

  38. champion_88

    WOW!!!

The Reds rested Orlando Cabrera today, but he pinch-hits and swings at the first pitch, pops up to end the game.

And I was deciding between him and Prince.

Makes me thankful, even though Prince does not even have an AB yet.

  39. yanksgiantsdevils33

Another survivor streak in the trash thanks to the Reds losing to the awful Pirates. I suck in that game!

  40. vinny1979

I suck at Survivor yanksgiants as well. I picked the Reds as well. It was a good game but oh well. Once my picks are done in Survivor if I don’t get past 5 this time I’m done with Survivor. I should of picked Vlad in HR BTS and went with Drag but have Willingham. I should of picked Ortiz yesterday since he had hit a homer previously against that starter. But oh well and I would be at 3 in HR BTS right now if I would went that route. Young doubled in his 4th AB so I am good in BTS and up to 3. On to tomorrow now.

  41. champion_88

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!

Fielder singles in his first AB in the 7th!!!

So his line now is 1 for 1 with 3 walks.

  42. champion_88

But you have to remember that since BTS’ record is much higher, it is easier to “seem” like you are playing well.

Like look at the records: 49, 37, and 11.

I use those, since that tells you the difficulty of each contest, not what the MLB records are.

So a 5-game hit streak is as hard to get as a 4-game hit streak, which is as hard to get a sa 1-game HR streak.

  43. lavolpe

NYY-MIN continues tomorrow. For those that had picks in that game, it’s like the rain tonight never happened; game just continues tomorrow where it left off tonight. Those with hits tonight are golden; those without gotta hope their players play & get a hit in that continuation game. Also, the suspended game is not like a “double header” for those that want to pick in the NYY-MIN night game tomorrow.

  44. champion_88

I sort of wish the blogger would clarify about that tomorrow though, because really that logic is only from you, I, and others interpretation of the rules and not from any official statement.

  45. joshzeke@hotmail.com

yeah, i had mauer tonight. so does that mean he has to get a hit in both games tommorow for my hit tonight to count?

  46. vinny1979

Joshzeke, no you don’t. If Mauer gets a hit in the completion of the suspended game it will count towards tonight’s streak. If he doesn’t your streak is over.

  47. jacobaaron

I know its a little late, but I had Zobrist on Monday and he didnt play. Why is it my streak ended if he went 0 fer 0?

  48. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Nope. The rules is very clear:

“1) In the event any Suspended Game(s) is subsequently completed within three (3) calendar days immediately following the date on which any such game(s) was suspended, for purposes of this Contest, all hits officially scored as hits for such Suspended Game(s) shall count as valid hits for the Game Day on which such Suspended Game(s) was originally scheduled.”

The key word is ALL hits.

  49. btsplayer@yahoo.com

  50. danpranka@newenglandsportstours.com

Regarding the suspended game NY-Minn I had Cano and on my results it has “DID NOT PLAY” So I can assume that even if Cano gets a hit later in the game it will not count…so as I see it it will go as 0-0 and will not end my streak…… any one got an answer on this one?

  51. darwri

if your player was 0 for 2 through 6 innings.. your streak is done i hate to say it…. if you get a hit today from the same game it wont matter.. its whoever you picked today.. and if you picked cano today.. the first game wont count towards it… because its from a postponed game.

  52. deb23

    PER THE RULES:

Example: A participant selects Dustin Pedroia to hit on the May 4th game that is suspended. Pedroia goes 0-for-2 in the first part of the game that is suspended on May 4th, but gets a hit in the portion of the Suspended Game that is resumed the next day, May 5th. In this case, although Pedroia’s hit took place on May 5th, for purposes of this Contest, the hit would count as a valid hit for May 4th, Game Day on which such Suspended Game(s) was originally scheduled.

So it seems if Mauer gets a hit in the resumed game it will count towards last night game.

Jeter already has a hit in last nights game, so I may pick him to get a hit today. Just worried about the length he may or may not play in the 2nd game.

  53. bye.buy@hotmail.com

So according to what you all are saying, I picked jeter last night so my streak goes to 21. But my wife picked mauer and in order for her to get to 21 mauer has to get a hit today!! and if he doesnt her streak is over??

  54. deb23

bye.buy: It appears if Mauer gets a hit in the resumed game she lives another day. I would not pick him for the 2nd game since I don’t know how it would apply to the 2nd game if he goes 0-4 in the resumed game. Make since?

Jeter has a hit in the suspended game, so I may pick him for the 2nd game. Just not sure.. It may be better to avoid both teams in todays picks.
