Beat the Streak Report: Thursday, May 27

480x270_HPence.jpg

Tough day in the Beat the Streak neighborhood, as about 22 percent of our aspiring multi-millionaires had the rest button pushed on their streaks, thanks to hitless performances from Ichiro Suzuki (11.2 percent), Albert Pujols (3.3 percent), Torii Hunter (3.2 percent), Vladimir Guerrero (2.0 percent) and Justin Morneau (1.8 percent).

As for me, well, I rode Troy Tulowitzki’s 1-for-2 evening to up my streak to a shiny six games which puts me in a tie for third place in “The Bloggers” groups.

I know I wasn’t asked, but I know you care. Admit it, you do. You really do.

And just to make unprovoked predictions, Hunter Pence will ride me to a seven-game streak with a hit this afternoon. Why am I picking Pence? Well his numbers against opposing starter Dave Bush are stellar (.500 AVG, 7-for-14), but truthfully, I have no patience and need instant satisfaction and absolutely positively must take someone playing in that 1:10 EST game.

How you like those strats?

Time for Thursday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Justin Morneau: .353 AVG (12-for-34) lifetime vs. Yankees starter Javier Vazquez; .442 AVG last 14 games.

? Adrian Beltre: .455 AVG (5-for-11) lifetime vs. Royals starter Brian Bannister

? Hunter Pence: .500 AVG (7-for-14) lifetime vs. Brewers starter Dave Bush

? Mark Teixeira: .800 AVG (8-for-10) lifetime vs. Twins starter Nick Blackburn

? Ryan Howard: .440 AVG (11-for-25) lifetime vs. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Dan Uggla: .333 AVG (11-for-33) lifetime vs. Braves starter Tim Hudson. Would you ever roll the dice with a career .259 hitter against a guy like Tim Hudson? Think not.

You’ll thank me later …

? Matt Holliday: .000 AVG (0-for-4) lifetime vs. Padres starter Wade LeBlanc

? Evan Longoria: .167 AVG (1-for-6) lifetime vs. White Sox starter Gavin Floyd

? Ryan Zimmerman: .200 AVG (2-for-10) lifetime vs. Giants starter Barry Zito

Leaderboard time!

Wednesday’s leader “postbud32” saw his 26-game streak disappear under rug swept thanks to an 0-fer from Jayson Werth.

DOES ANYBODY WANT TO WIN THIS GAME?

Whoa, sorry for the ALL CAPS. I get excited sometimes.

Anyway, this means that “kneetgma” is now king of the BTS castle with a 26-game streak of his own.

Let’s see how long that one lasts …

Top MLB streakers

? Travis Hafner: 12 games

? Adam Jones: 12 games
? Michael Young: 12 games

? Jeff Mathis: 10 games (DL)
? Troy Tulowitzki: 10 games
? Robinson Cano: 9 games
? Nelson Cruz: 9 games

My streak reset because for some stupid reason, I decided to rest my streak of 2 on Orlando Hudson. What was I thinking?!?! Well live and learn I guess. From now on I will pick only a few players and alternate them back and forth. That ought to do the trick.

I’m happy that Votto didn’t play yesterday as it put the pause button on my streak. I have Zobrist today as Floyd sucks this year and opponents are hitting .310 against him this year and Zobrist has been hitting well lately.

Well……….so much for the scientific approach to this streak business….I applied weighted averages to the various statistics to come up with an adjusted batting average….I picked the highest average each day….Everything went well until Morneau went 0-fer in the suspended game yesterday…and then he proceeded to go o-fer in the next game as well……So now I am just going to randomly pick players with decent batting averages….If I win that should piss off all the BTS scientists….I’d rather be lucky than good.

How do I credit for Jeter in the suspended game. I’m only at 3 so it’s not a big deal YET but i would rather resolve the issue now and not later. Does anyone know of a email address or how to contact the moderator?

    Crazy Besibol Factoid Numero Uno:
When Ichirio joined M’s his English was zero. His mgr, “Sweet” Lou Pinella didn’t speak Japanese(no kidding!) But….They both played with players from Spanish speaking countries so Ichirio and Pinella communicated in Spanish.
Survivor: My bad luck continued last night when I took TB and Boston beat them.

My streak for some reason was reset yesterday to 0. I picked Votto yesterday but he didn’t play, so my streak should still be going right? Does anyone know why it would have reset or know how I can contact someone to let them know their mistake?

do they ever intend on giving everyone their extra game for getting a hit in the suspended game. i should be at 7 but it still says 6

Regarding the suspended game? Maybe they do that manually and is reason for taking so long? Or the “guy” that pushes the button to update suspended games is on vacation? Just being a wise-ayker. There are people that went 0-fer still in the top 50 and people that have one less streak than they should have. With the amount of money on the line for BTS, I’m sure they will get it updated really soon.

Top Picks for Top2500. ** Does not include the 3 early game as BTS updated before I got home. So those that were reset are not included in the percentages below and those that moved up to Top2500 to replace those that were reset are included below.

nymets1979 – I tired choosing from a few players each day last year. My longest streak doing that was 15. Over the long run it does not work.
forcook – Scientific approach (aka math type analysis approach) you can not put freaky plays and luck into a math formula. The great play etc makes it a game of skill with a dose of luck thrown in. Scientific approach won’t get you to 57.
Vinny and schenk – Zorbist’s single gets us to “Streak” another day. Morneau 0 -6 yesterday and most picked player today?

  11. nymets1979

My longest ever streak was 12, and that was like 3 years ago. This year it’s 7 and right now I’m at 1 with Beltre just getting a hit. I hope to get to at least 20 or so and then I guess we’ll see what happens after that.

Zikes. My 15 gamer is in danger. Sweeney 0-3 through 6 and the bad weather is moving in at Camden Yards. They can’t make up the game tomorrow since they A’s play in CLE.

you just have to hope the weather holds out long enough for sweeney to get another bat

Regarding Morneau’s recent 0-fers — sometimes BTS players gotta have short memories too? Just got a double to extend 1/4th of the Top2500. Personally, I’d tend to stay away from previous day 0-fers for fear of beginning of a slump; not always, and most of the time when I break my personal rule, it comes back to bite me!

  15. deb23

Sweeney got a hit in the 8th with 2 outs on a 1-2 pitch. I’m DUE for a first inning hit tomorrow. LOL!!! Good luck to everyone with games still in play.

Cards playing SD now and they are due in Chicago to play a day game at 1:00pm on Friday. This is brutal. Will Cubs be able to catch them “napping?”
    Ichirio on Friday.

  17. lavolpe

Cubs will be 4 back of Cards tomorrow. Weather permitting, possible outcomes: 7 back (STL sweep), 5 back, 3 back or 1 back (CHC sweep). Cards are throwing Carpenter/rookie/Wainwright, Cubbies: Wells/Silva/Dempster. I don’t see a Cubbie sweep, but series win looks doable. Go Cubs!

  18. bye.buy@hotmail.com

Well I am back to 1 hit, yeah!! I have had 2 streaks this year one at 16 and one of 21. My wife on the other hand has had one long streak and should be at 23 after tonight.

  19. bye.buy@hotmail.com

ichiro hasnt gone 3 days without a hit since 2007.
trying to decide between ichiro, prado, jeter, crawford

  20. bmoccabee@yahoo.com

yea so my streak was at 7 then I picked Mauer the game of the suspension then he got a hit and they didn’t count it. so I proceeded to pick Troy Tulo and he a hit and they increased my streak to 8 but then I picked Heyward who got a hit in his first at bat but they never increased my streak. My streak should be at 10 but its stuck at 8 and I emailed BTS@mlb.com. what should I do if they don’t correct the issue within the next day or so? and if anybody else had this problem what did they do? thanks to whoever responds

I took cano in the suspended game and he got a hit but my streak wasnt increased either. they havent increased anyones streak who took a player in the suspended game. the only things we can do is wait until the notice the problem. you sent them an email so hopefully they will correct it soon. im at 7 but should be at 8

  22. bmoccabee@yahoo.com

yea they increased it up to 9 because of Heyward getting a hit tonight but they haven’t increased the hit by Mauer so I should be at 10 but all we can do is wait and if they don’t give us credit we ganna raise hell if it keeps us from a prize or the grand prize haha

  23. dyankees3

Still waiting to be credited for hits from the suspended game. Apparently I’m not the only one experiencing this problem. I’ve emailed MLB twice now. Granted my streak is only at 4 but hey every hit counts especially in BTS.

  24. schenk015

going to take another rays player today in carl crawford. outside of garcias last starts hes been very hittable and crawford has hit him well his entire career

  25. vinny1979

Hey guys and girls, I’m going to be posting later when I am on my break at work. For now I will say that my pick will surprise a lot of people and I’m calling him my sleeper for today. He is hitting great lately and hits great at home and he is playing at home. Will say more when game locks and I get on break.

  26. danpranka@newenglandsportstours.com

vinny 1979 ….. I thought this blog was to help each other out and give any help to others on who you think is a good choice for the day…. posting your thoughts after they lock does not help the rest of us that post our thoughts from time to time…. I haven’t posted lately because I have been back to zero several times… now back to 5 or 6 depending when I get credit for the suspended game… we all should be helping each other even though the odds to win this is more than the national debt…..LOL Have a great holiday all

  27. champion_88

    “Jorge Posada, 53, 2.12 (DL)”

Hasn’t he already been on the DL for like 2 weeks?

How were they even allowed to pick him?

  28. champion_88

“nymets1979 – I tired choosing from a few players each day last year. My longest streak doing that was 15. Over the long run it does not work.”

It might, but you need to continually replace players who are struggling.

  29. champion_88

“Cubs will be 4 back of Cards tomorrow. Go Cubs!”

    Is that rooke, Jaime Garcia?

And how do you see a victory in there?

Cardinals were a free win there today and at best, you have even and slight Cardinals advantage, for Saturday and Sunday, respectively, when looking at the matchup at a glance.

haha, mine is obscure too…it would be funny if we had the same player!
