Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, June 4-6

480x270_Cano3.jpg

Can’t stop, won’t stop.

Residents of Streakville are either getting smarter or baseball hitters are just getting better, because the Beat the Streak gravy train was flying down the speedway in top gear yesterday.

Thanks to hits from each of the top eight selections, an approximate 55 percent of our residents extended their streaks, making their truffled lobster tail dreams all the more realistic.

Can you even put truffles on lobster tail? I don’t know, but I’m guessing if you had $3,000,000 you could find out pretty easily.

Anyway, Robinson Cano extended his streak to 17 games with a first-inning double off Kevin Millwood. Cano will look to keep it rollin’ tonight against Brett Cecil and the Blue Jays bullpen.

Oh, did I mention Cano is 4-for-5 lifetime against Cecil?

Who said this game wasn’t easy?

On to the weekend picks.

Still wary of picking streak leaders, but since I’m at 1 I’ll see there’s anymore water in the Cano well. :)

Still wary of picking streak leaders, but since I’m at one I’ll see if there’s anymore water in the Cano well. :)

I have Cano as of now at 12:56 Eastern but I may change to either Beltre or Dejesus. Cecil could shut down Cano tonight and that scares me. I want to keep my streak going so decisions, decisions.

Cano has done well against Cecil historically, but lately Cecil has been very effective with his pitches. Not sure who to pick if I don’t take Cano. May steal one of your choices and go with either Beltre or DeJesus. Was thinking Pagan, Bay, or Reyes of the Mets. Damn, these decisions are gonna be the death of me!

Also, be careful with picking anyone from KC. I believe Scherzer fanned 14 in his last outing. Might not be a wise choice.

I may go a completely different route all together. I have 6 hours to make a decision.

I have someone that will help me to make a pick and she’s good. I’ll be OK. Just want to make it to 12 and then who know where I’ll go from there.

im thinking joey votto vs livan, man today is such a tough pick day, ichiro hasnt had a streak more than 7 games this season, masterson gets killed by lefties but only real lefty on whitesox is juan pierre is is barely hitting, cant pick cano or jeter, never know when those blue jays pitchers are on their game, decisions decisions

going with EL CAbaio carlos lee against zambrano lees been heating up and its well carlos zambrano soooo

Carlos Lee v. Zambrano looks promising(?) Can a Cub fan do this though. I do have C. Lee in HR BTS.
Hey guys – Torii Hunter v. the hittable Snell of M’s. As of now he is my pick.
Stay away from RSox v. O’s as the O’s fired their manager today and teams usually go all out in their first game with a new manager.
AJ Pierxynski of Chi Sox would be an out of the box pick v. hittable Tribe moundsman Masterson.

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I hope everyone is having a good friday so far. Today does seem like a tough day because there are so many picks yet a lot of hitters (good ones that is) are going against pitchers who could shut down an entire lineup. Therefore I am going with Austin Jackson of the tigers against Bruce Chen and the Royals. I like the lefty-righty match-up and Jackson is hitting 4-6 against him this year. I thought about Cabrera also but I like my chances with the lead-off man. Also, I think picking any Tiger today might be a good pick. GL to you all!!!

Sorry, Jackson hasn’t hit Chen yet, he is 4-6 against Hochevar who is pitching tomorrow. Still going with him today though!!!

I don’t know. Even the person who gives me insight and helps me make my picks has no fecking clue. I guess it’s stay with Cano and hope for the best. If Cecil shuts the team down then I guess as an after thought it probably wasn’t a good pick. Maybe last second I’ll change to someone on Boston. Who knows.

Leaning towards a ChiSox against Cleveland. Weather was forecasted with rain, but Weather.com says all clear tonite with only a 20% chance of rain.

^^ at least until 10pm then the heavens will let loose. Xtra innings may be in jeopardy if applies, but hitters should have played 9 by then I would think

OK, pick is in and I’m sticking with it. Marco Scutaro. GL everyone!

nymets1979: Scutaro? Not Youkilis or Beltre? Boston will bat all 9 innings… Just messing with your mind ;)

Yep, I’m sure. He leads off and has been the most consistent hitter on the team as of late and pretty much the whole season. Scutaro is the only one that has had any success against Tillman. I’ll probably regret it, but I doubt it. I mentioned to my sister either picking Scutaro, Ortiz, Beltre, or Pedroia, and she said definitely Scutaro. She is a HUGE Redsox fan. She’s normally right too. Unless you can change my mind that is.

I thought Bruce Chen has a low .BAA this season though?

No one has mentioned my pick yet or the sleeper pick.

Champion, I don’t know who you picked but I’m sticking with Cano. As for a sleeper as I should I would post it everyday. I would say the sleeper is Francoeur. He is hitting .550 over the last 7 days and is very quietly hitting in the heart of the Mets lineup. He would be my sleeper for tonight. A sleeper is somebody who won’t be the top 15 picks for the day.

Here we go! Grab yourself a Budweiser, it’s Gametime!!

i’d have to say that the biggest sleeper is a guy that everyone is iffy on: Juan Pierre. A name no one’s talking about? David Freese. .380 against lefties, .390 at home….and the brewers staff has been struggling all year. I’ll probably choose a top 15 guy though. Still don’t have a locked pick until line ups are out.

Highest “No Selection”: Page 18, streak of 14 now reset to zero.

Well that was fast! Scutaro 1-1. I can now rest easy for tonight anyway. GL everyone else with their picks!!

What is the record for the longest streak broken with no selection? I would love to hear that player’s story; figure it would almost have to be work- or spouse- or child-related. Perhaps an illness. Death? Cell-phone failure? Last-minute date with the Wendy’s drive-in clerk, the one who’s kept said player awake for the proceeding three months. Maybe, “I was rinsing off pelicans in the Gulf.” Or: “I just forgot.” I can’t imagine that. Someone please tell us a story, something to get us over our elation at nymets1979’s success with Scutaro.

?Professor Pete

To prove he’s a good hitter and isn’t just a fluke, I’ll pick him again tomorrow. I’ll be up to 10 and 2 away from my career high of 12.

me too backrubs…..oh well, the ride on the gravy train had to end somewhere!!! :)

Could it be the Cano gray-train running out of steam? Yanks last ABs coming up in 9th and Cano due up 4th; at most 1 more AB. Pujols 0-fer in the 5th. Top 2 picks are making this Friday eve interesting so far.

LOL. I guess no beans & rice tonight for many streakers. I am hoping for a double Dominican Republic slam down. Why would anyone go with either of them?

Pujols looked like the typical trap set up. Good avg. against the pitcher + LHP + AH =/= hit 9 (= getting pitched around). It seems one more AB left. He often came through on his last AB because when opposing team is winning with a good margin, they will finally give him something down the middle.

I won’t even bother commenting on Cano as it was too obvious.

Finally SF/Pit started and Sanchez singles in the first to extend my streak. Good day not to pick Cano since I picked him the last 8 days…with his single hit day yesterday it was time to get off the train!

Yep, Pujols flied out in 7th. Leading by 4 and at home. Unless a bat-around occurs, Pujols takes down quite a few tonight also.

well i am back to zero after changing from young to cano. no big deal since i was at ONE anyways

“I won’t even bother commenting on Cano as it was too obvious.”

How was it obvious? No one explained that?

I only avoided him because I generally see that when picks seem “perfect,” they fail and Cano looked close to that idea today.

Thank heavens I went with Michael Young!

What’s up everybody. My pick as well as the sleeper for today is Francoeur. He is hitting .370 against lefties and .521 over the last 7 days so he will get me started again.

I went with Miguel Cabrera today.

Just to provide a little more clarification, I had always thought that Cabrera got pitched around and un/intentionally walked, but in his last 10 games, he has gotten at least 4 AB’s 9/10 times.

My current streak says 3 but it’s actually 1! I had picked C. Jones at L.A. on June 3rd but I didn’t realize he was status day-to-day. Of course he didn’t get a hit.

Thanks, I’m going to do more research before I save my picks.

Okay nevermind, I’m reading the rules and it says my streak shouldn’t end if he does not play.

I should read the rules too:

“If a player you select (including any Jumpstart Pick) does not play during the Game Day for which you selected him for any reason other than his MLB Club not being scheduled to play, your streak will NOT end.”

Saturday’s Top Picks of the Top2500. All games included, 131 different players picked overall.

Highest “No Selection”: Page 7 with a streak of 18 now reset to zero.

MLB Survivor: This far into the season and the highest streak is only 17, amazing. Six people got there and no one got to 18. That should change today with 3 tied at 17 and each picking different teams. New mark to beat will be set this week in baseball.

BTS: Been a good week for majority of the BTS crowd. To get on page 100, one needs a streak of 10 and a few are there with 9. For the past several weeks+, a streak of 8 was needed. Top2500 resets were down this past week & a 1/2 also; averaging in the mid-teens, but throughout the season so far, the average was between 20-25% resets per day. I wonder how much the NYY-CLE & NYY-BAL series had to do with it? Successfully relying on the heavy hitters: Cano, Jeter, Cabrera, Mauer, Moreneau, Young & some others were definitely involved.
But we’ve seen this before. All streaks come to an end and if we get too comfortable relying on the heavy hitters, the leaderboard may see a major correction in the comming weeks. Just thinking out loud.
InterLeague starts again soon and is always a bit interesting; though some favorable matchups exists.

Saturday-
Matt Holliday v. vulnerable Brewers Staff
HR BTS = David Ortiz
Survivor – Red Sox

Sunday-
Ubaldo Jiminez of Rocks v. AZ – looks too good to be true for Suvivor.
Also SF Lincecum v. Pirates
BTS-Freddy Sanchez or Matt Holliday look good
HR BTS – SD’s Gonzalez

I just don’t know what I was thinking taking Abreu yesterday. Except that I know how weak the 2nd string Mariner pitchers are. Abreu would have been the 4th up in the 9th, had not the Mariners put their 7-1 loss to bed in such a tidy fashion. OK – back to zero. No stress.

_em_ : I dont think abreu was a bad pick yesterday, he just didn’t get a hit. If you picked 56 good picks in a row, chances are only 35-45 times will they actually get a hit. I was about to pick abreu, but Freddy Sanchez homecoming in Pittsburgh against a pitcher who gives up a lot of hit seemed like the smarter pick.
lavolpe : It had something to do with it, but a lot of the popular picks were getting hits. With the yankees facing the O’s and Stro’s next, one has to think that we’re going to see a streak of 40 sometime soon. That is if Cabrera and Mauer don’t go hitless tonight.

What does 1/2 mean?

I am already finding a few other hitters that I think are ready to break out.

I only went with Cabrera today, because it seemed like such a great matchup and I thought it unlikely for 2 perfect picks to fail in consecutive days.

Also, I only wanted to give my 3 propsects a trial in unfavorable games today. They went 2 for 3.

I really hate interleague play for picks here for two reasons:

1) You lose matchup data on a lot of players.

2) You lose offense, since if the game is at an NL park, you lose the DH slot and if the game is at an AL park, you lose the guaranteed AB’s in the 9th inning.

“If you picked 56 good picks in a row, chances are only 35-45 times will they actually get a hit.”

That is why sometimes I think that if you are not confident in your pick, you should reject it and pick a 2nd or 3rd choice pick, to help alleviate that problem.

“lavolpe : It had something to do with it, but a lot of the popular picks were getting hits. With the yankees facing the O’s and Stro’s next, one has to think that we’re going to see a streak of 40 sometime soon. That is if Cabrera and Mauer don’t go hitless tonight.”

Well that has a different effect than you might think. It is sort of a high amplitude graph VS low amplitude. You have a lot of “great” picks, but that will serve to concentrate them into only a few picks, so if someone fails, a LOT of people get eliminated.

Conversely, if they all succeed, almost everyone moves on.

On the other hand, if there are a lot of only “good” picks, that will serve to spread them out over a larger number of picks.

So it will be difficult for all of them to succeed, but it will also be very unlikely for all of them to fail.

The tsunami days take many players to zero when big players have 0-fers together. That is why you have to “see what isn’t seen” and go under the radar once in a while to keep a streak alive. Posting that say “going with Cano today” are common. But today jagx posted that Freddy Sanchez was back in Pitt and facing their weak staff. That is good information. I saying to take a look at Juan Pierre of ChiSox who had a hit on Friday and Saturday. He still runs like a deer as was seen Friday when he legged out dribbler toward 3rd base. Anyone else got some good info on a non-super star?

Under the RADAR……….
“Think outside the box”
Matt Holliday is hitting .450+ over the past 7 days and is facing the Brewers staff this weekend. Holliday got hits Friday and Saturday yet he was not in the top 15 picks on either day. Please do your research and post it.
Good Luck to all on Sunday.

So we’re picking up sleepers? I’d say Brandon Phillips for Sunday. As far as intangibles go, which i’m looking at a little more closely these days, he ran over a catcher and knocked the ball lose to score a run yesterday! The nats got their “revenge” by hitting him in the 9th, but he shrugged it off and just seems pumped now. If that’s not enough he’s 16 for 36 during his 8 game hitting streak and he’s facing Stammen tommorow. Lots of good matchups tommorow though, lets hope we all pick the right one and that some guys near the top get knocked off!

Just started this June 1st and I’m enjoying it a lot. Went with Maggs on 6/1, and he went 3-5. Picked Miggy the next day and he got 2 hits. Yesterday’s pick? Alex Avila. AND HE GOT 2 HITS! Thank you Double A! Going with Johnny Damon today. Hopefully my streak will get to 4! Good luck to all!

Ichirio is hot and Pinero isn’t so hot – going with him today.

Sunday’s Top Picks of the Top2500. All games included, 128 different players picked overall

Highest “No Selection”: Page 11, streak of 16 now reset to zero.

Survivor: 2nd day in a row the 3 tied 1st place players picked different teams; trying to out-guess their opponents?
BTS: Top dog on the leader board got a bit gutsy today. Picked M.Tejada, who is 0-fer in 5 of last 7 games, 2 for 13 in last 3 games, including 0-5 yesterday. Must have a good feeling about this one, but it only takes 1 hit to contiunue a streak. With a dozen starters batting 320 or better, was today the day to go “outside the box”?

ChiCubs Wells and ChiSox Buhrele both being battered by Tribe and Astros in first inning.
Freddy Sanchez singles for SF. I’m moving to Monday.
Remember: Cubs v. Pirates at 12:30pm eastern tomorrow, a make up game for last weeks rain out. Bucs have owned the Cubs lately especially at home.

Carlos Silva is pitching tomorrow for the Cubs. That’s enough for me not to pick a Bucs hitter. Nope, not gonna happen. That’s like picking someone to get a hit against Jiminez. LOL!

Decided to just go with my own sleeper pick today but guess i didn’t need too. Tommorow Ichiro seems like the top pick. Probably going to avoid him though despite Feldman’s struggles. Going to look for a sleeper although not many options out there.

Ichiro might not play tomorrow anyway because he’s supposed to get some rest on this next 4 games set against Texas. I was going to pick him tomorrow, but not sure who to go with now. I have like 5 or 6 players picked and nothing is really making me go “oooooooh I have to pick him”. I guess I make my mind up before bed tonight as I won’t be able to change anything before it locks tomorrow at 12:30.

nymets1979 – What is the source of info on Ichririo not playing?
How about Scutaro v. Carmona of Cleve?
He is hot!

LOL! Are you picking on me now dragbunt? :-( The source was either on MLB on his player page or on ESPN on his player page. Seems to be gone now, but I know I saw it.

Found it. Here’s where I saw it:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/fantasy/wsfb/news/index.jsp?action=locate&pid=400085

Here’s what it says:

The Mariners’ ever-reliable right fielder has started all 56 games this season, and with Seattle in the midst of a 20-games-in-20-days stint, manager Don Wakamatsu said he’s keeping an eye and ear on his 36-year-old star. “Right now he says he feels great, but if we get on this 10-day road trip and it gets to the point where we would look at it, obviously the Texas series is the one we’d have to do something,” said Wakamatsu. The series in Texas would give Ichiro a chance to be used as the designated hitter, as the next six games will be played at National League parks with no DH allowed.

Panic! My HR streak is at 3! Who to go with tomorrow? Suggestions?

Oh man. IF Ichiro doesn’t play tomorrow night, he will no doubt come into pinch hit to ruin it for everyone. A funny thing is he is probably the only viable option for tomorrow. Didn’t he do something like this last year? I remembered he screwed me once last year with something like this.

Just imagine, 26% pick Ichi and he goes 0-for-1. And the insurance company that wrote the jackpot do a Sashimi Dance in joy.

Sorry for the triple post. It didn’t show up so I kept hitting “submit” button. I will only press once for this post.

I sort of hope that happens.

Now that the board here knows that, we can all avoid him and gain some serious ground.

Unfortunately, that quote is not really convincing.

That makes me think that he is just going to come out of the field and DH.

I’d love to know his career batting line as a DH though!

Ichirco is 41-for-106 (.387) as a DH in his career.

*Ichiro is 41-for-106 (.387) as a DH in his career.
