Beat the Streak Report: Thursday, June 17

hamiltonBTS.jpg

Dear Kevin Kouzmanoff,

Thank you for going 0-for-3 last night after I lauded you as a can’t-miss pick in yesterday’s Beat the Streak Report.

It must have been really tough to eschew all the sparkling stats and
momentum you had going, just to eliminate the small ounce of
respect I once trotted around Streakland with.

You demonstrated incredible discipline in each of your hit-free
at-bats, conveniently forgetting the swing that brought you a 15-game
hitting streak, the hunger that resulted in a 21-for-42 10-game span,
and the infallible memory which triggered a 5-for-10 lifetime average
vs. opposing pitcher Ryan Dempster, just so that I now have less street
cred than the Jonas Brothers.

Much thanks. I look forward to you hitting for the cycle tonight against Randy Wells.

Sincerely,

Dave

Time for Thursday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Josh Hamilton: 12-game hitting streak, .458 AVG (27-for-58) for June; has never faced opposing Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco.

? Andre Ethier: .368 AVG (7-for-19) lifetime vs. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo

? Adrian Beltre: .429 AVG (15-for-35) last 5 seasons vs. D-backs starter Dan Haren

? Marlon Byrd: .375 AVG (6-for-16) since ’05 vs. A’s starter Dallas Braden

? James Loney: .471 AVG (8-for-17) lifetime vs. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo

? Matt Kemp: .455 AVG (5-for-11) lifetime vs. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo

? Ichiro Suzuki: Has hit safely in 20-straight Interleague games; the longest active Interleague hitting streak.

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Delmon Young: 1.000 AVG (3-for-3) lifetime vs. Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez.

I double-dog dare you.

You’ll thank me later …

? Dustin Pedroa: .000 AVG (0-for-7) lifetime vs. D-backs starter Dan Haren

? Raul Ibanez: .154 AVG (2-for-13) since ’05 vs. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte

? Chase Utley: .142 AVG (1-for-7) since ’05 vs. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte

Leaderboard time!

“fromomma”‘s status as this game’s bee’s knees is well intact, as our
fearless leader upped his/her streak to 34 games last night thanks to
Alex Rios’ 2-for-4 performance.

“fromomma” is officially 59.6 percent on the way to the $3 million dollar grand prize, and you know what that means …30,000 MEGA tickets! Woo-hoo!

Not far behind “fromomma” is “dick.george”, who also rode Rios
to a 33-game streak. So it looks like we’re in a good place here,
people.

In Survivor news, a 6-2 Red Sox win over the D-backs last night
resulted in “brentandcam” upping his/her/their streak to an incredible
29 games.

Eight more successful consecutive picks and “brentandcam” will become
eligible to win $10,000 and a trip to the 2011 All-Star Game (assuming
no one else passes him/her/them).

But with Dan Haren taking the mound tonight for the D-backs,
I’m thinking “brentandcam” look outside of Beantown for the sure
victory.

Top MLB streakers

? Vladimir Guerrero: 12 games

? Josh Hamilton: 12 games

? Jose Guillen: 11 games

? Jeff Mathis: 10 games (DL)

? Robinson Cano: 9 games

I have Prado as he has been hitting well lately and it will continue tonight against Shields. I have Rockies in Survivor and Cabrera in HR BTS. I knew Kouzmanoff’s 0 fer was coming so I avoided him. Ichiro’s hitting streak in Interleague is going to end and it may end this weekend against the Cubs. Good sleeper I think is Butler or Guillen of KC. Butler is hitting .476 over the last 7 days and Guillen is hitting .400 and facing the Astros.

I think we might have a few more “No Selections” than normal today, because of the 1235 PM game.

I normally peek at the time of the first game the next day by clicking the next date on the scoreboard and normally you can just glance at the top for the first two games, but since we are in interleague play, the NL-only game is buried deep onto the bottom of the page.

As for picks, I have the Red Sox in Survivor, so the fact that Dave Feldman thinks they will not win, is good news.

I also have Adrian Beltre for Beat the Streak.

HR BTS is the most important pick though for today.

With a streak of 3, I am close to getting on the leaderboard.

Did not really see anyone I liked, but I ended up going with Josh Hamilton.

As for the No Selection count, sorry won’t have that info by the time I get home & pull the data because they will have already been updated/dropped from the BTS Top2500 standings. Looking at the standings right now, page 8 with a streak of 16 is highest “No Selection”.
Stayed with Dodgers for my BTS & HR BTS streaks.

    Whew. ÜÜÜ.

Thank you Arthur Rhodes. Loney extends me to double digets for the third time this season. Here’s hoping third time is lucky for me.

  6. 00liber

I’ve noticed watching Tiger games that if mags gets a hit Miggy almost always follows it with a hit. Maybe it’s just me. GL to all tonight.

  7. lavolpe

@00liber: not today. Both HR & BTS streaks end. Gotta stop picking day games. Well, I still have an opportunity to get to double digits by end of month 😉

Top Picks of the current Top2500. Does not include “No Selections” nor resets from the early game.
    Robinson Cano, 484, 19.36%
    Derek Jeter, 260, 10.4
    Adrian Beltre, 252, 10.08
    Miguel Cabrera, 145, 5.8
    Josh Hamilton, 128, 5.12
    Michael Young, 127, 5.08
    Vladimir Guerrero, 94, 3.76
    Victor Martinez, 91, 3.64
    Martin Prado, 82, 3.28
    Marlon Byrd, 50, 2.00
    James Loney, 44, 1.76
    Hanley Ramirez, 44, 1.76
Highest “No Selection” today was posted earlier with streak of 16 now reset to zero.
Yesterday was a bit painful with 30% resets of the Top2500

It still puzzles me why the Red Sox bat Beltre 7th.

It makes perfect sense to swap Ortiz and him in the order.

I am sure people would pick Beltre quite a bit more if he hit 3rd, instead of 7th.

  10. champion_88

well Betre had a great 1st AB and worked a 9-pitch walk.

seems like a good sign that Haren has nothing to get him out with.

  11. champion_88

6th inning single for Beltre and the Red Sox lead 6-4.

Hamilton 0 for 2 so far though.

of course, I had to have Vlad tease me right in front of him, even worse so because I was debating between those 2 for HR BTS.

drag – I like Howard Kendrick tomorrow – how’s the weather out there???? You thoughts? 🙂

  13. dalywalker322@aol.com

Chicago weather for Friday – 30% chance of isolated storms with wind blowing SSW 10 – 15 toward left field. Could be a Marlon Bryd kind of day. Silva has been the Cubs hottest pitcher – any stats from previous years of LAA v. Silva are out the window. Silva is a new man this year. Kazmir is up and down and gives up HR’s. Byrd could go deep too.
I’m also looking at Cano v. NYM – he is hot as is Hamilton of TX.

  14. dragbunt104

Weird Dynamic today at Wrigley Field (?)
Wind blowing out toward left field = HR kind of day
    vs.
Silva matchup up against Kazmir = two pitchers who have done well, Kammir recently and Silva all year long.
Any right handed batter could go deep or a lefty who goes opposite field.
Good Luck figuring this one out. Could be 2 -1 if pitchers are effective or 12 – 10 if pitchers slip up and hitters go wild.

RE Vlad: Last note I read on rotoworld, a week ago, was that the skipper said Vlad would play every other day. Nothing new on rotoworld noticed.

  16. 00liber

    RE: Vlad
Jun 18 Guerrero will be in the starting lineup on both Friday and Sunday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.
Recommendation: Friday will be the first time in almost two years that Guerrero will play the outfield on consecutive days. He’ll be Texas’ first option off the bench on Saturday, making him a risky sit in most daily leagues as well.
    Per Rotowire/Yahoo Sports.
    GL all, going with Rangers.

  17. champion_88

    Thanks everyone.

I actually ended up going with Marlon Byrd instead though.

Some of the picks on the leaderboard are WEIRD today!

Justin Morneau? Troy Tulowitzki? David Freese? Bobby Abreu?

  18. champion_88

    CURSE the Cubs!

Byrd goes 0 for 5! I guess he is cold to stay.

I thought that .417 against lefties would be enough for today.

But of course the Cubs just had to PRETEND to make a comeback in the 9th and then fall 1 run short of forcing extra innings and getting Byrd up again.

I have had 2 streaks of 9 so far this year.

Just even more taunting of not getting into double-digits…

  19. lavolpe

Friday’s Top Picks of the current Top2500. All games included, 132 different batters picked overall
    Player, Times Picked, Percentage
    Justin Morneau, 285, 11.4%
    Ichiro Suzuki, 232, 9.28
    Martin Prado, 200, 8.00
    Robinson Cano, 193, 7.72
    Joe Mauer, 168, 6.72
    Ian Kinsler, 152, 6.08
    Albert Pujols, 90, 3.6
    Michael Young, 84, 3.36
    Miguel Cabrera, 622.48
    Derek Jeter, 60, 2.4
    Carl Crawford, 57, 2.28
    Vladimir Guerrero, 57, 2.28
    Bobby Abreu, 54, 2.16
    Nate McLouth, 48, 1.92
    Josh Hamilton, 44, 1.76
    Evan Longoria, 44, 1.76
    Troy Tulowitzki, 35, 1.4
    No Selection, 35, 1.4
Highest “No Selection”: Page #8 with a streak of 16 now reset to zero per Vinny 😉

  20. champion_88

    “Justin Morneau, 285, 11.4%
    Ichiro Suzuki, 232, 9.28
    Derek Jeter, 60, 2.4
    Troy Tulowitzki, 35, 1.4”

Why did people use these guys today?

I know my streak got snapped, so everyone right now is in a stronger position than me, but Jeter has hit .211 in June, Morneau is right around .200, and Tulo has barely been picked all year, but now the active LEADER at 35 has him?
