Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, July 2-5

ARod480BTS.jpg

A rough day in Streakland yesterday, as Josh Hamilton’s 23-game run
came to a close and he took 12.9 percent of BTSers with him. Tack in a
couple 0-fers from Ryan Braun and Adrian Gonzalez, and more than 20
percent of all streakers are now beginning their holiday weekend at 0.

Speaking of holiday weekends …it’s, um, a holiday weekend! So make sure to plan ahead and select your guys through Monday.

The last you want is to see your 24-gamer slip through the
cracks because you were too distracted grilling and keeping your Uncle

Leaderboard time!

You know how we had three streakers atop our leaderboard yesterday with 30-game streaks? Well, now we have one.

“wolfenstein35” is our lonesome streak now, riding high with a 31-gamer thanks to Derek Jeter 1-for-4 performance.

Odds “wolfenstein35” plays Castle Wolfenstein over the long weekend? I’ll leave that for you all to discuss.

Be safe, have a good one.

Top MLB streakers

? Mark Teixeira: 12 games

? Miguel Cabrera : 11 games

I don’t know about Beltre for tonight. It’s a somewhat iffy pick because Sox’s line-up has been decimated by injuries. If plays out to be a tight game, they can just pitch around Beltre. I would aslo have preferred a lefty against Bergesen.

BTW, they changed the starting pitcher for Detroit. Some young lefty from minors.

  2. chisox07

Jeter singles, I’m at eight, and I can relax for the rest of the day. Beltre was my obvious choice for tonight, but it’s always the “guarantees” that break you like Hamilton last night. Just gotta go with the gut sometimes.

  3. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I went with Jeter as well. I almost went with Teix but I said to myself snap out of it and came to my senses.

It seems like Cubs pitchter, Brian Schlitter, certainly lives up his name. He did everything you don’t want the reliever to do. Give up every run imaginable while getting one out. I had to put on my glasses to see the correct spelling of his name. I swore I thought it spelled more aptly…

Did Chan Ho just hit Aaron Hill out of anger after Wise hit a bases clearning triple? I think Mr. Park will be parking himself somewhere else outside of BX very soon.

  6. chisox07

Hello and goodbye to anyone who picked Cano today. His stats and splits are great of course, but he’s only been hitting about .225 (9 for 40) in his previous ten days. Not to mention, the starting pitcher, Cecil, went 8 innings of only 5-hit ball against the Yankees in his last outing against them this year in New York. Not a bad pick when compared to Cecil’s past few starts (15.2 innings, 16 ER), but there were much better picks that could be made today. This is just one of those days where a pitcher will remind you of why he is in the majors.

With all that being said, I picked Jeter because of an inner feeling and got lucky. šŸ˜‰ I hate waiting until the evening to know.

  7. nymets1979

I picked Beltre, but I was only at 0 anyway, so no biggie. But being at 31 and now being reset, that has to hurt. Oh well, it’s just a game right?

  8. btsplayer@yahoo.com

It looks like a board cleansing day before the fireworks start. I guess I will be in the first page after tonight with my streak of 3. Just kidding. Told you about Beltre. Even I saw that coming. The reason he was hitting as well as he did was because he had some good protections up front of him. Plus, he was simply too hot and was due for a 0fer. The lesson is you can’t assume bad pitchers to be bad every outing. It was the same with Narveson of Mil when he took down Dick.

  9. lavolpe

I guess many will have to count themselves lucky not to have been included in this wipeout. Of the original 25 on the 1st page this morning, only 5 survived: 3 due to hits and 2 due to did-not-play. Over 40% cleansing; mostly top dogs.

  10. champion_88

“I picked Beltre, but I was only at 0 anyway, so no biggie. But being at 31 and now being reset, that has to hurt. Oh well, it’s just a game right?”

lol, I hate when people say this.

When you spend 3 hours a day analyzing your picks and then maybe another 3 hours watching games, it is not JUST A GAME!

  11. dragbunt104

Take a mental health day – If you are spending 3 hours a day analyzing BTS you need a break. Take a walk and enjoy the sunshine! The game has rained on our parade too much this year.

5 hits – Brewers, Giants, Mariners, Yankees, Phillies, Pirates
6 hit teams – Padres, RSox, A’s, Indians
30 teams played on Friday – 13 had 6 or fewer hits.
    Tough year……

  12. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I went with Ryan The Riot. I see he is batting lead off & all the stat splits point to the best situation for him. Only thing that will get in my way is the Cubs can’t get any offense going and/or Cueto throwing brilliantly. Both of the scenerio can happen easily. We’ll see.

At this point, we should just focus on the scott.fredrickson. Anyone else is pretty much meaninglessly far away. With little more than a month left, the time is running out for all of us.

  13. lavolpe

Tip: Ever curious how the BTS world is generally doing regarding picks. Jump to Page 100 of the standings. If the page is full of people with streaks of 7; BTS is having a bad couple days. If filled with 8’s, BTS is doing about average. If filled with 9’s or 10’s then BTS has been having some really good days. Pattern is n/a in Aug & Sep.

  14. lavolpe

@Champion_88. Agreed, not just a game if one really wants a good shot at the jackpot; else might as well buy lottery tickets.

  15. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Wow. scott.fredrickson with outside the box pick! Nice. He survived the yesterday wipeout by not being a lemming. I like his pick for today.

Yeah, but what was a normal day in 2006? Or 2002?

It may have been the same then, but Ichiro got a hit in 85% of his games then, so maybe we did not notice as much?

  17. chisox07

I have Brandon Phillips, so it’ll take another trip around the lineup for myself as well. On the bright side, though, the wind is blowing out, so assuming the pitchers start coming down to earth, it should be fine. (I hope) All it takes is a hard hit ball up into the air to hit it out of Wrigley today.

  18. champion_88

“Take a mental health day – If you are spending 3 hours a day analyzing BTS you need a break. Take a walk and enjoy the sunshine! The game has rained on our parade too much this year.”

Well, one hour for each of the three contests.

If I ever get into the 30’s though for BTS, I might do three hours for BTS alone!

With the All-Star break coming, I just keep trying to grind it out until three days of rest.

That is why I try to avoid doing the contests for HR Derby and the All-Star game, since I need to rest.

  19. btsplayer@yahoo.com

“I’m at 11 and I’ve taken Albert Pujols.” I thought about taking him too. I think he will come through. I think Pujols & Holliday will both come through. You just get that hunch.

“@btsplayer: Regarding Scott’s D.Young pick. Think it is unnecessarily risky. Young bats 7 and @ home, may only see 3 ABs. I think better non-lemming picks about.”

I think we should do some research over the offseason to see if batting slot in the order has much of an impact on success rate.

All things being equal, you would lose 5% more often in going from 5 PA’s to 4 PA’s, 8% more often in going from 4 PA’s to 3 PA’s, and 13% more often in going from 5 PA’s to 4 PA’s.

But if you feel 15%+ more confident about your pick, then it might be worthwhile to pick the lower-in-the-order selection.

For example, Cliff Pennington has been hot lately, but I have not wanted to use him because he always hits 9th.

Erick Aybar is a GREAT example of this anomaly as he was a .300+ leadoff-mold hitter that hit 9th in the Angels order last year.

  23. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I think I made a wrong pick. I really overlooked the fact that The Riot is slumping. He simply cannot catch up to Cueto’s smoking fastball to get a good whack. Only thing I can hope for is a blow out and he get 5/6 ABs & get to BP early on.

  24. champion_88

“The sure bets or lemming picks are 50/50 over time.”

For Survivor, this category fares even worse. The last game Blackburn pitched in is a great example.

  25. lavolpe

@btsplayer: A blow-out in Cubs favor, hah! Not catching up to fastball is in his favor – slaps opposite field alot

  26. champion_88

“Jeters walks all 3 ABs so far. This is why this game is impossible to win. Who could ever forseen this happening??”

I know there was one game this year when someone went 0 for 1 with 5 walks.

  27. btsplayer@yahoo.com

“A blow-out in Cubs favor, hah! Not catching up to fastball is in his favor – slaps opposite field alot”

Yeah. I know the chance of Cubs having a blowout is pretty negligible. Who knows. Maybe Aramis will earn his paycheck today. LOL.

The Riot is not slapping anything lately except taking his seat on the bench.

  28. btsplayer@yahoo.com

The Riot heard my criticism and told me to bug off. He burned a cheap groundball hit to show me off. I almost went with Jeter today. Thank goodness. When is the last time Jeter walked 2 ABs in a row and he the only one walking on the team.

  29. lavolpe

@btsplayer: Regarding Scott’s D.Young pick. Think it is unnecessarily risky. Young bats 7 and @ home, may only see 3 ABs. I think better non-lemming picks about.

  30. btsplayer@yahoo.com

“I think better non-lemming picks about.”. Yeah. Possibly. I actually think Morneau would have been better pick. But many times the guys who really should get a hit according to all the stats are ones bombing out. Its the low radar and yet no pressure hitters like Delmon that comes through often. Everyday I write I write my possible picks into 3 categories. I tell you. The sure bets or lemming picks are 50/50 over time. Something always go wrong with those picks. That is why nobody can win this. Its the ones batting below power hitters who can hit that comes through consistently. But as you said, they lilmited ABs so there won’t be any lucky 5/6 AB cheap hits for these guys. Its either they get a hit off the starting pitcher or that is it. We’ll see what happens.

  31. chisox07

Can’t say I’d ever have expected Wells to no-hit the Reds through five innings. Not looking good here thus far. Maybe the score will stay tied at 0-0 and go 18 innings.

  32. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Jeters walks all 3 ABs so far. This is why this game is impossible to win. Who could ever forseen this happening??

  33. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Wells is beginning to turn things around a bit in last 2 starts. Knowing Cinci, they will turn it up one inning to burn the Cubs. Just better hope BP is part of the onslaught.

  34. chisox07

I don’t know, this 18-inning tie is becoming a possibility because the Cubs are still being the Cubs today with 12 stranded runners through 5 innings.

  35. champion_88

Well, I just KNEW that Wells was going to lose the no-hitter the next inning, because with a comfy, 3-run lead, he goes back to just throwing towards the plate.

I would not be surprised to see the Cubs still lose the game.

  36. lavolpe

Interesting leader board today. Yesterday, 20 leaders shared 2 batters that go 0-fer. Today, the 25 leaders chose 17 different batters. BTS evolution? Or just scared?

  37. mpmcqueary@gmail.com

Thank you Brandon Philips! Streak to 24. Dang vacation this week is going to kill my concentration.

  38. lavolpe

@chisox07: Welcome to Bloggers Group. You can find your entry in Top2500 on pg 77 before BTS updates

  39. btsplayer@yahoo.com

scott.fredrickson is not looking @ stats. I think he watches all the games and sees who is swinging well.

  40. champion_88

If someone ever wins, I hope it is someone who uses that strategy and invests a lot of time and care into each pick.

  41. lavolpe

@btsplayer: don’t think so. Looking back at his picks, he appears to be a MINN fan; relying heavily on M&M boys but also Cano. Also only picks team’s heavy hitters. Seen this pattern before.

  42. btsplayer@yahoo.com

“he appears to be a MINN fan” he must have gotten inspiration for today’s pick from watching the game. It was such a left field pick. When You follow a team, sometimes you SEE who is swinging well. That is the only way to explain a pick for a guy batting 8th. Good for him though.

  43. lavolpe

@btsplayer: too early to play along, his streak not high enough. But my prediction tomorrow: Mauer, Cano, Prado or best hitter on another team (lots to choose from tomorrow)

  44. whbirdman9@gmail.com

Nice, went 3 for 3 today in all BTS. David Dejesus singled in the 8th. Youkilis homered. And the Padres beat the Astros. Had my hit streak up to 13 but it was just reset a few days ago so I’m only back to 3 right now. Have joe mauer for tomorrow.

  47. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I went with a lazy pick in Cano. I think I will regret it but all the possible choices seem a bit iffy. So I hope Cano gets by with one hit. If not start all over tomorrow!

  48. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I thought about the reverse psych-out invovling the M&M boys. That is Mauer w/ high avg. against Shields goes 0fer and Morneaue w/ low avg. gets hit. The way BTS plays out, this is the likely scenerio and the leader must have thought that it will. He will be the king BTS picker if that happens.

  49. chisox07

I’m up to ten as Miguel Cabrera just delivered a first inning RBI single off of Cliff Lee. I didn’t like going against Lee because of how solid he’s been, but everyone is due for a bad game eventually and he has a bad track record against the Tigers (5-9 with a 4.76 ERA lifetime against the Tigers, losing his last three starts). Glad it pulled off.

  50. dragbunt104

    Well it finally happened……
Joey “The Black Cat” Votto – Called out on strikes in the first inning on a low pitch, argues with Plate Umpire Angel Campos, throws his helmet and gets tossed from the game.
Officialy 0-1 and how many streaks end?

  51. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Back to fat zero for me. Thanks not nothing A-Roid. You couldn’t drive in the runs so Cano got intentionally walked. I hope you have fun with hormones.

  52. lavolpe

@btsPlayer: Based on your previous comments, I would have lauged my butt off if A-Rod ended the game with a hit!

  53. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I have even slightly more devious name for A-Roid that combines his penchant for swinging (from what I read) and hormones. I will let people guess. It involves surrouding the letter A with 2 letters.

  54. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I will give a hint. One of the letters is G. Actually, there are 2 nice variations on that name.

  55. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Dave Robertson. I am surprised he is still with Yankees. Isn’t he only supposed to come in wipeout games?

  56. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Uh ohh. Jose Molina is mad now. They intent walked .200 hitter to pitch to him. He is very upset. Let’s see what he is got.

  57. btsplayer@yahoo.com

So how does Encarnacion walk back to the dugout. Does he just look down on the ground. Does he go home & start looking for a job at Walmart? Possibly as a former almost athletic greeter?

  58. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Wow. Why did so many people go with Cano. You guys ruined my Cano pick by picking with me. Stop copying me.

  59. yanksgiantsdevils33

It’s not everyday that the Yankees pick up 14 hits and Cano is not in that mix. Bye 12 game BTS 0 for 3 and then 2 walks to Cano. Talk about getting on base the wrong way. The 1st was intentional and I was rooting for A-Rod to walk and he struck out. I was hoping to catch my earlier 17 game streak that went from May 24-June 10.

  60. ohwow

Been tough going in getting a streak together. I can’t believe that my top streak this year is only 10, even though I have been 78% correct for the season.

Ichiro seems to be slowing down a bit. They DHed him Saturday, and he hasn’t had a multi-hit game since June 29, the longest stretch without a multi-hit game this season. Still, Ichiro is 64 successful, 17 hitless, and 11 off days, giving him a 79% success rate if he is playing. Like me, his longest hittting streak this year is 10. Unlike me, he has a current 6 game hitting streak, which I have the opportunity to match if I can select players that get hits for the next three days.

I did manage to get a ‘trophy’ for a .350 month, with a .356 average (41/115) in June. Just once, it would be cool to put together a .400 month. Starting the first four days of this month at .312, it seems that I have some catching up to do. Anyone know who’s gonna go 5-for-5 tomorrow?

  61. whbirdman9@gmail.com

Pretty frustrated for today. Mauer singled so my streak is up to 4. I had Ike Davis picked for a HR but had some doubts so at the last second I changed my pick to Pujols, and Davis ended up hitting one out and Pujols didn’t. Also had the Braves picked to win and didn’t get that one. Pretty crappy BTS day for me after yesterdays 3 for 3. =/ oh well

  62. lavolpe

Could be a good few days to up one’s streak. With pitcher favorites like Milwood, Slowey, & CLE/BAL (take your pick) on the mound in next few days. Today’s most picked player by the Top2500 & the entire field: a wild guess says DET’s Cabrera & Ichirio/Cano near the top (just because) šŸ™‚

  64. njredlegs8

so I picked Paul Konerko yesterday for July 5. When I come to check it it says “No Pick” is it tough luck or can I do something?

  65. nardberg

drag – had Cabrera yesterday and was considering Hamilton for today. Now I’m rethinking based on your post. šŸ™‚ Good luck. DAVE FELDMAN – DELETE SPAMMERS AND THEIR CRAPPY MERCHANDISE OFF THE BLOG!!!!!!!!!

  66. chisox07

I was going to go with M. Cabrera, but I didn’t want to over-pick him at the same time, so ended up going with Boesch for today since he’s been hitting extremely well himself and had the better splits as a lefty. Go figure Miggy got a hit and Boesch walked, but with Milwood not proving much on the mound today, I’m not going to be worried until the final at-bat.

I’m starting to get agitated. I’m hoping I can get a nice long streak going today and it’s going to start with Ichiro tonight. I had Ike Davis in HR BTS as well as I felt he was going to go deep but switched to Votto at the last minute. We all know what happened there. My own fault. I’m not changing my pick in BTS the day of anymore. Everytime I do I get screwed and the new person doesn’t get a hit. I knew that Tex was hitting .500 on Independence Day before yesterday’s game and I was going to switch to him but I went with Cano instead. I should of gone with Tex and I would be at 2 but oh well. Good luck to all today. I have Ortiz in HR BTS and Yanks in Survivor.

I went with Michael Young. Not that it matters since back @ 0. Cano will come through. Its the Day-After-Lemming-Pick effect. Since all the lemmings including myself died with Cano, its time for smart pickers to get the benefit of near automatic hit. It works about 6 out of 7 times.

So many Ichiro fans today. His #s against Banni does not make sense. Banni seems like the type of pitcher that Ichi eats up for snack. It could riighties hit Banni better. I remember it was the same last year. I think I went againt Banni with Ichi this year & Ichi ended up getting a hit off the reliever.

I wonder how many days between 2 streaks. This person was up high in the first page at least once last year.

  72. champion_88

“I have even slightly more devious name for A-Roid that combines his penchant for swinging (from what I read) and hormones. I will let people guess. It involves surrouding the letter A with 2 letters.”

I really do not know, since “surround” means one on each side, so the letters in stars in the word ***hole do not work.

  73. champion_88

“Dave Robertson. I am surprised he is still with Yankees. Isn’t he only supposed to come in wipeout games?”

At least in the beginning of the season, he was a main middle reliever.

  74. champion_88

“Been tough going in getting a streak together.

Unlike me, he has a current 6 game hitting streak, which I have the opportunity to match if I can select players that get hits for the next three days.”

I think he has has 2 or 3 of those 10-game hit streaks though.

  75. btsplayer@yahoo.com

“I really do not know, since “surround” means one on each side, so the letters in stars in the word ***hole do not work.”

xAx-Roid. One of the x is G. And G can go on both spots for 2 different names. I really don like A-Roid. I remember his nonchalent comments when early hormone abusers were being caught. I remember the comments being somewhat self-righteous. I guess BigPapiJuice is no different.

  76. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Ichiro killed a lot of streakers who got used to his easy picking last year. That includes myself. At least for now, he is only 90% of what he was last year. And what happened to his day game prowess and no back2back ofers. All broken this year. I relied on the no back2back ofers this year and got smashed by bad sushi. Bad sushi, bad!

  77. champion_88

“I knew that Tex was hitting .500 on Independence Day before yesterday’s game”

Eh, I am a little skeptical of the usefulness of such a stat.

While it is certainly a “feel good” pick to have someone who is great on a holiday, how relevant is it?

Would you use that same stat if he had hit .500 historically on August 2nd?

If you need a tiebreaker angle between two evenly matched players, I guess that would be OK, but being your primary reason for using him, I am not sure I would suggest going that route.

  78. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Wow. M. Cab. is just out there taking batting pratice everyday. He is a real pure hitter. He doesn’t need to smash the ball because he knows how to hit. He does it with such finesse. Just beautiful swing.

  79. chisox07

I was stuck between M. Cabrera and Boesch for today’s pick. So far in two innings, one has two doubles and one has two walks. Guess which one I have.

  80. lavolpe

Cute. Blog lead above: “Speaking of holiday weekends …it’s, um, a holiday weekend! So make sure to plan ahead and select your guys through Monday” Well, iheartstrazzy (aka Dave Feldman/Blog Guy) had a “no selection” today; didn’t follow his own advice šŸ™‚

  81. chisox07

@LaVolpe: My thoughts exactly….. This just teaches me not to choose a player because lefties hit the probable pitcher better. At least he isn’t striking out every time up to the plate today. Walking shows a good eye, typically.

  82. chisox07

LaVolpe: My thoughts exactly. But this just teaches me not to switch a hitter just because lefties hit the probable pitcher a little better than righties. Oh well, at least he has three walks and not three strikeouts. It’s not like he’s having a bad day at the plate or anything. Just an unlucky day for me.

  83. chisox07

I’m sorry about all of these double posts. Every time I submit them, they’re not appearing for me nor on the recent comment list above. I had to sign out and sign back in to now see them…

  84. lavolpe

Other odd ways of having your streak end. Yesterday, Todd Helton, 0-3, comes to the plate in bottom of 15th with no outs & bags loaded. Hits sac-fly & wins game, ends streaks.

  85. lavolpe

@ChiSox07: “… Oh well, at least he has three walks and not three strikeouts…”
My preference: I’ll take strikeout-type over walk-type. I want my guy to swing, bottom line. Example: I tend to stay away from Youkilis (high walks) but prefer Wright (high strikeouts)

  86. chisox07

@LaVolpe: I suppose I agree. Today, I’m just basing it off of him not having one of those days at the plate where the batter just isn’t seeing the ball and is looking lost at the plate. I can’t watch the game, so I can’t exactly see the pitches or his swings, but it doesn’t sound like he is doing poor at the plate at all. Just getting a lot of “ball four base hits.” Here’s to him finally getting the green light to swing in his last time up.

  87. lavolpe

Good luck in 7/8th inning. But if you make it to page 1, I’ll be hexing you every day until you win or fall šŸ˜‰

  88. lavolpe

@ChiSox07. P.S. Boesch is not a walk-type 10 BB, 23 SO last month, no BB this month ’til today.

  89. btsplayer@yahoo.com

BB is definitely being walked today. I think the BAL game plan was to not give anything to BB because some breathing rooms comes up after him in the line-up. BB has been a silent killer. People take him for granted because he is the new guy batting after MCab but he has done tons of damage this year.

    I guess BB got BBed.

  90. dragbunt104

The pitchers duel in Detroit today shows that logic can not win this game.
31 hits (Thanks Milwood) but Boesch and Markakis had 0-fers.
All Star Game – Final Man voting is now open.
I’m pulling for Konerko(AL) and my main cat, Joey”The Black Cat” Votto(NL). Vote early and often.

  91. rip2thecompetition

For my fellow BTS’ers who selected Wright, the Reds have scratched Harang. LHP Travis Wood starting in his place.

  92. chisox07

@dragbunt104 I’ve been taking out my frustration on losing my streak today in voting those same two for the Final Man. I’ve made at least 100 votes today.

  93. lavolpe

For other Wright pickers, FYI: Wright has 150 pts higher average against Lefties, bats better at home than away and bats better at night than day. Hopefully for us, this equates to a multihit game for D.Wright.

  94. dalywalker322@aol.com

    FYI for Tuesday
Stay away from ChiSox – Weaver of LAA has been unhittable his last 2 starts.

  95. lavolpe

Spammers getting a bit bold & out of hand, huh? Hopefully, their email addresses get black listed from the blog; neverending battle.

  96. ohwow

I don’t usually ‘double dip’, but my streak is now at four and the home run streak starts at one. Viva Carlos Santana!

  97. tenten25

Unbelievable. The one guy on the Tigers that doesn’t get a hit is the one I pick. I can’t believe Brennan Boesch walked 4 times! I’m not sure if he should be insulted that no one pitched to him or honored that they think he’s so good they don’t want to pick him. Back to square 1 for me!

  98. chisox07

@tenten25: I hear ya. What was your damage? I lost my ten day streak, personally. It’s not the worst loss, but when the season is rounding the finish, it’s time to put up or shut up.

  99. whbirdman9@gmail.com

Held my breath for a little while with Jeter but he eventually singled so I’m up to 5

  100. tenten25

@chisox07, I was at 9 going for 10. It’s only my first time playing BTS, so I’ll have setbacks like this. I’m not in this to win the money, though. If I do, hey that’s great, but I’m just trying to see how far I can get before season’s end.

  101. yanksgiantsdevils33

I have had it with Survivor. I can’t even win when I picked the Mariners with King Felix on the mound against the Royals as the bullpen blew the lead in the 8th inning and lost in the 10th inning. Every right pick loses in that game.
