Beat the Streak Report: Tuesday, July 6

480x270_Hart2.jpg

Is there a better way to start off a short week fresh off the heels of a Gravy Train Monday?

No there is not.

Villagers of Streakland feasted in a total hits smorgasbord yesterday,
as the the eight most popular selections each got hits to pull their
forces together and extend the streaks of about 55 percent of the
universe combined.

Justin Upton was the day’s biggest annihilator, taking down 2.4 percent of all streaks with an 0-for-4 evening.

Was Justin Upton an MLB.com certified Pick of the Day?

Yes, he was.

Am I the guy who decides which players to feature in said Pick of the Day?

Yes, I am.

Moral of the story?

It’s always fun to ask yourself questions in writing even if you
cost a small nugget of people the chance at $3,000,000 along the way.

Time for Tuesday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Corey Hart: .360 AVG over 20-game hitting streak; has never faced Giants starter Madison Bumgarner

? Chipper Jones: .409 AVG (9-for-22) lifetime vs. Phillies starter Cole Hamels

? Vernon Wells: .400 AVG (8-for-20) lifetime vs. Twins starter Carl Pavano

? Juan Pierre: .375 AVG (6-for-16) lifetime vs. Angels starter Jered Weaver

? Michael Cuddyer: .571 AVG (4-for-7) lifetime vs. Blue Jays starter Jesse Litsch

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Tony Gwynn: .357 AVG (5-for-14) lifetime vs. Nationals starter Livan Hernandez.

Nepotism much?

You’ll thank me later …

? Paul Konerko: .091 AVG (1-for-11) lifetime vs. Angels starter Jered Weaver

? Marco Scutaro: .143 AVG (2-for-14) lifetime vs. Rays starter Jeff Niemann

? Jimmy Rollins: .167 AVG (4-for-24) lifetime vs. Braves starter Jair Jurrjens

? James Loney: .167 AVG (2-for-12) lifetime vs. Marlins starter Chris Volstad

Leaderboard time!

“Wolfenstein35” didn’t survive the long weekend. This means that
the Beat the Streak bee’s knees for now is “scott.fredrickson”, who is
rocking a 33-gamer after Robinson Cano’s 1-for-4 evening.

Fredrickson is now 57.9 percent on his way to the big bucks. I
would not be opposed to the idea of Scott getting a little ahead of
himself, taking out an advance on his winnings and buying me one of
those hand-held fans with a water spritzer — a spritz-fan.

Oh, spritz-fan, how I need you on this 100-degree New York day.

Top MLB streakers

? Corey Hart: 20 games

? Miguel Cabrera: 14 games

? Clint Barmes: 12 games

? Jason Kendall: 10 games

? Corey Patterson: 10 games

NYM game: Harang scratched yesterday, starts today. Has back pain & could be replaced near game-time. May want to monitor this.

Well tonight I have Ian Kinsler as he is facing Masterson and Masterson sucks on the road at night. Yanks in Survivor and Carlos Gonzalez in HR BTS. Just about to give up on HR BTS though.

im going to stick with my gut and stay with miguel cabrera to get a hit in all 3 games of this series against the orioles. tough luck for those who picked boesch yesterday. the orioles seemed like they were content with just putting him on base and hoping to let the rest of the lineup do all the damage. ive never seen boesch that patient at the plate as he rarely walks. i also praise him for his great batting average since he rarely swings at the first pitch of an at bat putting himself in an 0-1 hole alot

I still play Survivor but I can’t even win when I picked the Mariners with King Felix on the mound against the Royals as the bullpen blew the lead in the 8th inning and lost in the 10th inning. Every right pick loses in that game.

Warning – This is not a test of your emergency broadcasting system. This is the real WARNING…….
LAA v. CSox in Chicago today
    Peavy v. Weaver
This has all the markings of a 2 -1 pitching classic with the total hits by both teams being less than 8.
Forget about Pierre v. Weaver from past performance.
90 degrees in Chicago – and the men on the hill could be hot.
    BTS – Miguel Cabrera
Survivor – Tigers (unless OOliber is taking them 🙂
    HR – Cabrera

Lol. 🙂 nah I’m going with the twinkies over the Jays. Let’s see if I can go 10 the wrong way.

@schenk015: sadly, I was one of those people who picked Boesch. However, he was oddly patient despite swinging at the 1st pitch 9 out of 10 times.

Nothing to lose today thanks to the Oriole’s and Boesch yesterday. Going with M. Cabrera. Gotta get a head start going into the All-Star break.

  9. yanksgiantsdevils33

I’m picking the Tigers in survivor and Justin Morneau in beat the streak. I hardly touch home run beat the streak but I’m taking Mark Reynolds tonight.

Had Jeter last night and Crawford tonight for hits. I’m up to 5. Also have A-Rod for HR and the Tigers to win

Still thinking about either Cabrera or David Wright even if it’s against some Reds Pitcher from the minors.

“Had Jeter last night and Crawford tonight for hits. I’m up to 5. Also have A-Rod for HR and the Tigers to win”

I looked at Crawford, but he is only hitting around .235 against lefties this year.

  14. chisox07

I doubted Cabrera yesterday and so I had to go with him today. Glad I did. 🙂 One down, 56 more to go!

  15. yanksgiantsdevils33

Good news 00liber! The Twins beat the Blue Jays 7-6 so your bad survivor streak is over.

  16. chisox07

I’ve also managed to tie my longest HR streak of the year with Cabrera in the bottom of the ninth: 1.

  17. rip2thecompetition

Easily going with a Tiger for BTS tomorrow, just gotta make sure I pick the right one out of Maggs, Miggy & Boesch.

  18. yanksgiantsdevils33

Nice win with the Tigers and Morneau’s homer on beat the streak have made me 2/2 in the 2 real games.

  19. yanksgiantsdevils33

Something is wierd. First the leaderboard said that the leader (scott.fredrickson) had Joe Mauer now it says Robinson Cano.

  20. lavolpe

@yanksgiantsdevils33: Depend on how far past midnight, EST you refresh the listing. You may see yesterday’s pick (Cano) or today’s pick (Mauer). Ignore it and it fixes itself within an hour or so.

  21. vinny1979

Well I’m going with Cabrera tomorrow. Didn’t jump on the bandwagon and I just hope tomorrow is the day he doesn’t have an O fer. Bergesen is pitching and he has a .327 BAA against on the road so yeah. Doing good and hope it continues. Rangers in Survivor tomorrow and Wright in HR BTS.
