Beat the Streak Report: Thursday, July 8

480x270_Phillips.jpg

While our Beat the Streak leader (“scott.fredrickson”) pushed pause
on his 35-gamer after watching Justin Morneau sit last night’s contest
out, our Home Run Beat the Streak leader made moves.

For the eighth consecutive day, “tpw” got his Miss Cleo on
(hello, reference from 2004) and used his psychic powers in selecting
Ryan Howard, who proceeded to tater off Kris Medlen in the fifth inning
last night.

With an eight-game homer streak, “tpw” is now riding solo with
the season lead and is in the driver’s seat for two tickets to the 2011
All-Star Game in Phoenix with a shot at $10,000.

Did I mention how unpredictably insane this feat is? Odds “tpw” has been stocking up on Powerball tickets?

As for my debut Ryan Braun Home Run BTS Pick of the Day? Yeah, the other LeBraun went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.

Glad I could help.

Time for Thursday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Brandon Phillips:.455 AVG (5-for-11) lifetime vs. Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick

? Jorge Cantu: .500 AVG (7-for-14) lifetime vs. Diamondbacks starter Rodrigo Lopez

? Franklin Gutierrez: .417 AVG (5-for-12) lifetime vs. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte

? Michael Young: .400 AVG (6-for-15) lifetime vs. Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie

? Juan Pierre: .347 AVG (4-for-15) lifetime vs. Angels starter Ervin Santana

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Mark Kotsay: .417 AVG (10-for-24) lifetime vs. Angels starter Ervin Santana.

Hits in six of last seven games makes me say yes to Kotsay.

You’ll thank me later …

? Paul Konerko: .182 AVG (4-for-22) lifetime vs. Angels starter Ervin Santana

? Prince Fielder: .167 AVG (2-for-12) lifetime vs. Giants starter Barry Zito

? Andrew McCutchen: .167 AVG (1-for-7) lifetime vs. Astros starter Roy Oswalt

? Vladimir Guerrero: .059 AVG (1-for-17) lifetime vs. Orioles starter Jeremy Guthrie

Leaderboard time!

Our second-place streaker, “trisha0087”, also selected Justin Morneau to freeze a 29-game streak.

What’s going on here? Why all the Morneau love? Has anyone seen
Miguel Cabrera hit lately? Was Brad Bergersen scaring you all THAT
MUCH?

HEY, ALL CAPS, GO AWAY!

THAnks.

Top MLB streakers

? Miguel Cabrera: 16 games

? Clint Barmes: 14 games

? Austin Jackson: 11 games

? Erick Aybar: 10 games

? Jeff Keppinger: 9 games

? Sean Rodriguez: 9 games

? Ichiro Suzuki: 9 games

Dave Feldman must be having a bad day. Morneau did not sit out yesterday, went 2-4. Maybe looking at today’s leader picks; Morneau will be sitting most likely.

taking joey votto. im gonna ride the 1st basemen while they are hot. hopefully i can get to a 10 game streak when the all star break comes

  3. vinny1979

I have Michael Young today in BTS. Young looks good against Guthrie and that day off on Tuesday I’m hoping refreshed him and now he gets hot starting tonight. Rangers in Survivor and Tex in HR BTS.

  4. yanksgiantsdevils33

Hey dragbunt I got the same Kinsler/Young idea for beat the streak and I chose the Rangers in survivor. I’m taking A-Rod for a home run.

Congrats to tpw. Very happy with last night. I was 3 for 3 with all BTS for the 2nd night in a row. Had morneau for a hit, Howard for a HR, and the Rays to win. Hoping for the same outcome tonight.

    Today:

    BTS: Evan Longoria
    HR: Vernon Wells
    Survivor: Rangers over the Orioles

Alex Rios DOES fail?he burned me a few days ago dang it! Going with Votto tonight. Should’a picked the big Puma today in HR bts! he homered for the 3rd day in a row…to add insult to injury he did it twice! He’s got Ohlendorf’s number for sure.
Went 0 for 3 last night…still licking my wounds. Thank you Ordonez/Butler/St Louis!!

“Alex Rios DOES fail?he burned me a few days ago dang it!”

You picked the wrong “day” for Rios’ magic. He was bound to fail 2 days ago.

  10. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Is anyone else getting worried about the leader’s uncanny approach to picking the Twins? I am hoping Hamiltion pick is a FAIL today. I figure he might be due for 0-fer plus he is going against the *best* or the ace of the Orioles. LOL!

  11. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I think if Texas get C. Lee, they can take down the Yanks in the playoff. I don’t think any Yankee pitcher is immune from getting bombed by the the big bats, espcially in TX.

  12. btsplayer@yahoo.com

And how about Ichiro? Working on a nice hitting streak comprised of barely hits. This reminds me of Ryan Zimmerman’s streak last year. You just can’t ride it because he is not hitting well except getting that one hit a day.

  13. btsplayer@yahoo.com

The second half of the m&m boys is out. Mild concussion. He is not gonna be a good pick for at least one week even when he comes back. That’s gotta hurt.

  14. lavolpe

@btsPlayer: Leader does appear to be Twins fan, no doubt. Place “pinkilili33” on your lucky-meter; picks Albert vs Ubaldo & goes 0-fer til bottom of 9th when reliever comes in.

  15. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Yeah. I saw that. pinkilili33 must be all blushing pink now. She must have a lady’s luck or something. Going against Jimenez?

It’s official. Pick Pujols only when he it looks to be absolutely dreadful. That is when he comes through. All other times, he is just there to destroy streaks.

  16. dalywalker322@aol.com

ChiSox are hot – Keep an eye on them for Survivor.
Buerhle on Friday v. Royals and game is in Chicago.

  17. 00liber

    Good day my fellow bloggers.
Whats with the lack of love for Rios today? His day numbers are awesome this year, something like .430 during the day vs rhp, enough for me to go with him. Yay, upto 8.

Lav: how many ppl(top2500) took Rios today? just outta curiousity.

Dodgers in survivor, Konerko didnt homer for me.

    GL to all tonight.

2010 “The Year of the Pitcher” Update
I went to the Angels at ChiSox game this afternoon.
Santana v. Danks – Classic Pitchers duel
Lone run scored on a Sac Fly in 1st inning.
Total of 5 hits between both teams
2 sharp hit balls by Rios – He must be hot to have had 2 hits off Santana today.
Watch Danks and Santana after All-Star break – do not pick hitters who face them – they are on fire.

  19. chisox07

So since my regular BTS is taking a road block hit after snapping my 10-gamer the other day, I’ve randomly partook in HR BTS again and thanks to Votto I’m up to 3. Maybe it’s my destiny? Hah.

  20. lavolpe

    @00Liber: Only 24
Votto & Swisher make All Star team
Hmmm, Cubs on WGN tonite, I can watch my team & my pick all at once; nice 🙂

  21. dalywalker322@aol.com

lavolpe – ATT U-verse is a great deal and you would see all Cub games. They are always running a special deal.
    Rangers – Friday v. O’s
    Kinsler – .471 v. lefties
    Young – .360 v. lefties
    O’S Matuz lefty
    Cabrera still hot too

  22. dragbunt104

“Ichiro singles on a soft groundball to Jeter in top of the 1st.” This guy has a 10 game hit streak and is batting .250 over the past 10 games. What is going on? Are these home games witha generous official scorer?

  23. yanksgiantsdevils33

Good news: Ian Kinsler is 2 for 3
The awful news: Texas has blown it’s lead with 2 wild pitches and an error in the 8th inning and there are NO OUTS!

  24. yanksgiantsdevils33

A walk and the Orioles have the lead. 34.7% have the Rangers on survivor and they are having massive implosion in the 8th inning and there are still no outs!

  25. lavolpe

Well, Schneider’s 12th inning homer does in Phillip’s pickers (0-5) and takes down a chunk of front-runners. Only major streak-recking pick left tonite: Cano

  26. yanksgiantsdevils33

Thanks a lot Frank Francisco another right pick loses on survivor and now my survivor streak is 0 AGAIN!

  27. lavolpe

Ouch, Top2500 sucker punched: Phillips, Ethier, Hanley, Vlad, Cantu, Ad.Gonzalez, Jeter & Mauer go 0-fer, taking down 577 streakers or 23% by themselves, plus aother 6% from other batters.

  28. lavolpe

@btsPlayer: DET-MIN game; hoping Verlander is on his game. Thinking our leading Twinkie will return home in that game.

  29. dragbunt104

Looking at Kinsler v. O’s on BTS or Markasis v. Feldman
HR BTS – Corey Hary v. Pirates staff – Brewer home game
Survivor – TB and “Big Game” James Shields at home V. Cleveland.
Please is there a web site that give pitchers home – away win/loss records. I know MLB site gives Home/Away Era’s etc. but not wins/losses. This is good info to have for Survivor.
e.g. as I heard on ESPN – Adam Wainwright is 9 – 0 in home games and CC Sabathia is 11-0 in home games. This is golden info for Survivor picking.
Good Luck to all today. All-Star break is around the corner.

  30. 00liber

    Drag.

    Sports.yahoo.com/mlb
from the main page there is a “players” dropdown search box. Then select their split stats.

  31. champion_88

Why is there two sets of stats with the lefty/righty splits?

I saw Kinsler hitting .440 against lefties coming into today from the MLB.com player splits page.
