Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, July 30 – August 1

young480.jpg

When playing Beat the Streak we do much more than learn about baseball. We learn about life.

We learn why it’s important to not believe in jinxes. We learn why you
should strike while the iron is hot and take your 15 minutes of obscure
fame when you can.

And we learn never to take Martin Prado on the road, where he is a .286 hitter this year.

Whoops!

I’m just so, so, so, SO sorry this whole streak thing didn’t work out for you, Richard Jucksch. It’s really a shame.

Our date of destiny was already painted in the canvas of my dreams, just
waiting for our Ed McMahon moment — arriving at your doorstop, wearing
a tux, holding your over-sized $3,000,000 check. Hugging you. Hugging
your loved ones. Hugging you while hugging your loved ones.

It’s truly been a pleasure dancing with you, hand-in-hand, during our
blissful 39-day journey. This is no time to regret your mistakes of the
past. Rather, this is a time of excitement as you head off on your new
odyssey.

Just remember that every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.

I just made that line up. Just now — on the spot. It just came me.

Like it?

After Prado’s Mortal Kombat-style fatality of our leader, Jucksch, our
new pious sage heading into the weekend is “vads15” and his 29-game
streak.

Hey, 29! That’s the same number Ian Kay reached before he blew his
once-in-a-lifetime chance at fame and a life full of amazingness and
(probably) hummus.

Top MLB streakers

? Nelson Cruz: 17 games

? Justin Upton: 14 games

? Michael Cuddyer: 13 games

Hey Dave, I have a pick for you and he is also my pick. Delmon Young is hitting .538 over the last 7 days with 15 hits and he hits awesome at home and Fister is a disaster currently so it’s a perfect pick you can say but he is my pick.

  2. lavolpe

Interesting… Anyone like Josh Hamilton but doesn’t like him batting 5th in the order & only protection is Nelson Cruz? Anyone notice he moved up to 3rd last night? Per rotoworld, that’s not going to change anytime “for the foreseeable future”. With Vlad & Cruz giving him protection now, gotta feeling I will start to lean on Josh, though I haven’t picked him all year. He did get 3 hits yesterday.

  3. 00liber

I’m also going with Delmon today to restart me. FYI 66 game days left till end of season.
A rough past few days, streak of 5 gets you into top2500.

  4. pperkins@arkansasonline.com

Vinny1979, Delmon Young is a great pick; I’m not sure, but I think it would have received my Silver Bullet Lock of a Lifetime Garo Yepremian PAT Seal if I had seen it first. Thank you. I’m running with it.

He seems due for an 0 for.

He is definitely not a .332 hitter.

  7. bmoccabee@yahoo.com

@champion: Delmon is a great talent just because his stats aren’t anything special he has the talent to continue this streak. Remember he was a top prospect before he was suspended for throwing the bat at the umpire

He didn’t, he went 0-4 yesterday afternoon. Perhaps you were looking at today’s box score for Friday instead of Thursday’s?

CHC trade Ryan The-riot and T. Lily to LAD for B. Dewitt and minors. Ryan Ludwick moves to SD in 3 way trade.

  24. dragbunt104

OOliber – Is it OK to wake up Lou Piniella and tell him about the trade? Piniella, this year and last, is a mere “shell” of the fiery player and manager he once was. Should call him “Piniella Lite.”

I was having an issue logging in earlier but all looks good now. I chose Justin Upton in BTS as he is hitting .350 over the last 7 days. .412 vs the Mets and he is on a hitting streak. Pujols in HR BTS and Chisox in Survivor.

My 22 game streak in Survivor comes to an end.
    A’s over White Sox
It was an amazing run. Kind of like being in Vegas and not being able to throw anything put a 7 at the craps table. But like all good runs it came to an end today.
Thanks to OOliber for the kind words the past few days.
New streak (?) starts on Sunday – Cards and Wainwright who is tough at home over Pirates.

  29. dragbunt104

    Sunday
Alex “El Sol” Rios in BTS as he is batting .437 in the daytime and Chi Sox game in 1:05 Central Time

  30. chisox07

I got really lucky today because I had Bautista locked for my pick when I went to bed last night. But when I woke up this morning I just couldn’t leave it that way because I was sure he’d go 0-1 and get traded or something. Very glad I switched to Konerko, though I was also pretty zoned in on Neil Walker who went 1-3. But Bautista just supplements a list of players I looked into that went hitless including Podesdnik, Huff, and Rios. Even if it was grim, I am successfully at 14 games. Such an awesome feeling to actually have a ranking other than 1000+.

  31. bravesfanforlife88

I got my hit last night with Polanco’s last at bat single so I finally got back to five after going three straight 0-fer’s last week. Today I am going to go with Votto because he hits well at home and during the day, plus, he has been on an absolute tear lately. It could mean he is due for an 0-fer but we’ll see. I was going to go with Cano as well but the Rays are a good team and he hit them well the last two days so I think he could come up empty today. We’ll see though. GL to all today.

  32. yanksgiantsdevils33

Yesterday was nice going 3 for 3 with the Royals winning and Robinson Cano (both games) homering (3 for 4 overall).
    My picks;
    Survivor: Cardinals
    Beat the Streak: Robinson Cano
Home Run beat the Streak: Magglio Ordonez

  33. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I am locked in with Cano. I lost my streak again 2 days ago on picking the wrong A. Ramirez. Never ever go against a good pitching. I underestimated Francis and he manhandled the Cubs. Argggh.

With the leader down, I think this game is winding down too now. There is like less than a week left before the BTS blackhole closes for this year.

I did so much worst this year than last year. I got to 8 twice and 9 once. Also, had tons of streaks in the 4 to 5 range. Everytime I got something going, Jeter, Ichiro or Mauer killed them.

  34. dragbunt104

Carlos Gonzalez v. Carlos Silva today looks like a nice matchup for those not comfortable with Rios v. Gonzalez.
    Sun is shining in Chicago
Game time is 1:05pm Central time
    Carlos Lee is “El Caballo”
Pablo Sandoval is Kung Fu Panda
Alex Rios is now “El Sol Gatto” He partols centerfield and is as fast as a cat and hits big in the daytime. He is now “The Sun Cat” Gio Gonzalez is on the mound for the A’s and The Sun Cat is 1-6 lifetime against him (night games perhaps?).
I’m hoping that Rios has a hit or 2 in his bat today.
    Good Luck to all……….

  35. blanco21

I put so much effort into this game as do all of us on this blog. I get so mad when I see big streaks from players that put their selections like 10 days in advance!!!
Check out the current leaderboard “ogatto221” PRADO 2 days in a row…. This is BS

  36. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Man. I totally forgot about Rios today. I can’t believe it. And he was only one of the few who got a hit off Gonzalez last time. That was day game too and I picked him that day.

  37. vinny1979

Blanco, I know what you mean. People who have 15 gamers have chosen Ordonez also. It’s sickening to me but they are making mistakes since their streaks don’t move at all so it’s a sucker way out.

  38. vinny1979

I chose Rios as well and he isn’t a popular pick today which is surprising but people look at career numbers and not what he has done in the daytime. Their loss is our gain I hope.

    BTS- Alex Rios

    HR BTS- Robinson Cano

    Survivor- Cards

    Good luck to all today.

  39. vinny1979

I just found out that CarGo has hit a homer in 4 straight games. Would of been nice to know before the game locked. Oh well we will see what happens with Cano.

  40. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I am not surprised that Robbie Cano is the top pick of the day. I thought there would be more Ichiro pickers today. Even when he was slumping last time, Ichiro got 2 hits off Lilriano.

And for some reason, Ichiro is not hitting righties this month. When he is slumping, he kills lefties. When he is hitting, he doesn’t hit lefties. This year, Ichiro’s stats are all over the place. No wonder he killed me so many times this year.

I wanted to go with Ichiro today but vowed while back to stay away from him for the rest of the seaon.

I think its a good pick. I totally lapsed today and forgot. Like not picking Polanco earlier in the week because I thought he was in the night game.

Polanco is another reliable hitter against righties during day time. He will never disappoint in that box.

  43. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Knowing I am just a avg. picker and the things never go as it seems with BTS, I predict Ichiro gets a hit and Cano goes 0-fer thereby killing my 1 game streak again. I guess that means the leader will go to 32. LOL.

Off topic: Has anyone tried Palm’s steakhouse (@JFK). Its supposed to be a chain. Any good? I am supposed go their later but I am not sure whether to be amped or not? I didn’t care for Ruth’s that much.

“I just found out that CarGo has hit a homer in 4 straight games.”

Didn’t he also hit for a cycle yesterday. Whoever had this guy in the rotisserie league really lucked out.

When COL plays home, its always good to look in. A lot of their hitters kill @ home.

  45. vinny1979

I knew A Rod was out from this morning. It’s a regular day off and Cano is hitting clean up today. Also Howard got plunked and taken out of the game already.

  46. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Mauer out of the line-up. JHamil probably the same. I read something about him getting cortisone shot.

  47. btsplayer@yahoo.com

“I knew A Rod was out from this morning. It’s a regular day off and Cano is hitting clean up today.”

I would not have picked Cano had I known A-Roid being out. #4 spot is a stressful place to be a hitter.

went with Holliday. Mt streak was in jeopardy as Holliday was 0-3 due up 1st in the 8th and they were winning. Well he got the hit as I move to 5 on my streak. Dont know who Im ganna pick tomorow.

Yes it was a beautiful, sunny day game in Chicago today
    Yes the ChiSox won
No Alex “El Sol Gatto” did not get a hit.
Those who forgot about his amazing daytime stats were rewarded today.

Yes, sadly I chose Alex Rios today and had to witness it in person as I attended the game. I was actually considering Ramon Castro because every time he plays lately, he manages to surprise me with hits. Today was just one of those days as he got lucky when he hit a liner down the third base line and it bounced off the base high enough and far enough for no play to be made resulting in a base hit. But Rios really looked bad from my seat today, along with a lot of the Sox. 14-gamer, I hardly knew thee.

i may be the greatest at this game i chose lastings milledge against adam wainwright today for whatever reason and he tripled of wainwright in his first AB he also had an 8th inning single to finish 2-4

I don’t feel quite as bad anymore as most players I looked at also went hitless. 🙂 Cuddyer, Cano, Cruz… Just one of those days. But it never feels as bad when all of your possible picks are 0-fers rather than 4-4’s. Hah.
