Beat the Streak Report: Tuesday, August 10

480x270_Mauer.gif

It was Beat the Streak retro edition on Monday, as long-time BTS
stalwarts Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki were the day’s
most popular picks and each hit safely, combining to extend the streaks
of 26.6 percent of the population worldwide.

This is all peachy keen and (somewhat) normal.

What isn’t normal is that Jason Heyward was our leader’s — “gfc2112″ — pick of the day.

Now, Heyward went 1-for-3 and extended our leader’s streak to a stellar 34 games. His hit was even a homer to boot.

But, this selection of Heyward is a little strange. And by strange, I really mean positively insane.

Heyward entered Monday’s game hitting .170 while in the midst of an 8-for-47 slump dating back to July 27.

And to put more molded carrots in this tapioca pudding, the J-Hey kid had gone hitless in seven of his previous 13 games.

I’m not exactly sure what was going through “gfc2112″‘s hit-seeking
noggin, and, yeah, obviously it paid off, and, double yeah, I fully
recognize I look like Donkeylips from “Salute Your Shorts” critiquing
Usain Bolt’s form in the 100 meter here with only a 10-game career-high
streak to my name, but this is too much.

And with that …

Time for Tuesday’s Picks:

Oh, hello there …

? Joe Mauer: .379 AVG (11-for-29) lifetime vs. White Sox starter Freddy Garcia

? Ichiro Suzuki: .400 AVG (6-for-15) lifetime vs. Athletics starter Brett Anderson

? David Ortiz: .462 AVG (6-for-13) lifetime vs. Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero

? James Loney: .600 AVG (6-for-10) lifetime vs. Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick

? Troy Tulowitzki: .417 AVG (5-for-12) lifetime vs. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Yuniesky Betancourt: .429 AVG (9-for-21) lifetime vs. Angels starter Dan Haren

You’ll thank me later …

? Alex Rodriguez: .000 AVG (0-for-10) lifetime vs. Rangers starter C.J. Wilson

? Alex Rios: .154 AVG (2-for-13) lifetime vs. Twins starter Scott Baker

? Nelson Cruz: .111 AVG (1-for-9) lifetime vs. Yankees starter A.J. Burnett

Leaderboard time!

We already know what the deal is with “gfc2112″. A full seven games behind our leader is “halmuni”, riding a 27-game streak.

That’s nice.

Top MLB streakers

? Raul Ibanez: 16 games

? Juan Pierre: 16 games

? Omar Infante: 12 games

? Howard Kendrick: 11 games

? Albert Pujols: 9 games

Hey guys and girls. I wasn’t around yesterday but was upset that Braun wasn’t playing. I have no shot at the 3 Mill but I can still get the 10k so that is my goal and also to see if my new strategy works. I have Chone Figgins today. He is in the midst of a mini hitting streak and has been hitting well so why not. I also lost with the A’s as I didn’t even know Wakamatsu got fired until I got home late last night but oh well.

BTS-Chone Figgins
HR BTS-Swisher
Survivor-Padres, they are playing the Pirates so why not.

Thought I’d start a countdown of sorts until Dave (blog guy) picks it up if he does
Minimum current streak required to have a chance at the prizes entering today (assuming no 1-game playoffs).
Streak of 2 for $3M, deadline was Aug 8th
Streak of 0 for $10K, deadline is Aug 21st

Last year it was clear in the rules that a playoff game would not count towards the streak (I think it had a specific end date on the last Sunday of the season). This year its a little ambiguous so I would like to see a clarification. Also if the season is extended due to rainouts that require a Monday game due to standing considerations, it appears that those games would clearly count towards the streak.

@vegasjs: Are you talking about potential 1-game playoffs? If so, I don’t think there is any ambiguity per the following official BTS definition:
The Contest begins on April 4, 2010 and ends following the conclusion of the final game of the 2010 MLB regular season (the “Contest Period”).
Any 1-game playoffs are part of the MLB regular season.

Oh, regarding my comments about 1-game playoffs being part of the regular season. Statistically, that is true. Here is an excerpt from rule 10.20, MLB Official Rules.
“Any games played to break a divisional tie shall be included in the statistics for that championship season.”

Going from memory, last year I had an 0-fer in the playoff game. I guess my less than stellar luck this year began on the fateful day! lol
BTS-Ichiro
HR – Carlos Gonzalez
Survivor – LAAngels
Staying away from Cubs/Giants and Twins/White Sox – All Starters, with exception of Lincecum, could toss a 2 hitter or get lit up like a fire cracker on the 4th of July. Lincecum should be solid against a Cub team that is an embarrassment.

Hmmm, TEX to win vs. NYY? No Teixeira, Posada or Cano in the starting lineup (rotoworld). I’ll take that bet.

I agree with you dragbunt that all those pitchers could throw a two hitter, but I am still going to go with Mauer because he has been hot the last two weeks. He kills me a lot it seems but I just have a feeling he will come through. He also hits Garcia well. I was going to go with Beltre but the Blue Jays have been playing well and Romero threw a two hitter against the Yankees his last outing so I would avoid picking anyone from the Red Sox today. Anyway, GL to all.

I’ll be watching Clash of the Titans tonight with the Indians taking on the Orioles. Last minute switch to Luke Scott instead of Markakis.

I can’t put more than two wins together in Survivor!

Good luck everyone.

My picks;
Beat the Streak:Shin Soo Choo
Home run Beat the Streak: Mark Reynolds
Survivor: Nationals with Stephen Strasburg

Highest no selections for each game;
Beat the Streak:”juicermix32″ on page 4 with a hit streak of 14.
Home run Beat the Streak:7 with HR streaks of 2 on pages 7-11.
Survivor:”budmanbill” on page 4 with a winning streak of 7.
I’m out of $3 million contention as of last night with Nick Markakis’s 0 fer and any “No selections” in beat the streak are out too.
No selections in all 3 games are reset to 0.

Well I got my hit already. I was going with Beltre and he had an RBI double in the second inning. Nice to get that first hit early. I cannot win the 3 million unless there is a one game playoff but I am still in it for the $10,000. I know it’s not 3 mil, but I’d take a free 10 grand any day, haha. GL to everyone else today, especially all of those who picked Mauer. Over 10%.

Use Gerald Laird?

Champion_88 – Thanks for putting up the link to that playoff game from 2009. I think I actually had Granderson who had 2 hits! I thought Gerald Laird was a pro golfer!
Tough loss yesterday on the A’s v. M’s – hard to get a long streak going in Survivor lately.

Joe Mauer doubles!

Up to 3!

Dick George getting nervous, leader moves on, expect a biography email from Dave.

Stupid Nats losing 8-1 with Strasburg, never again with them I can’t believe I put my streak on those bums.

Big Night for the MVP Guys:
Mauer, Votto and Pujols all have hits.
Nice fireworks display before the game started in Cincinnati tonight.

I’m having a real tough time with tomorrow’s pick. I guess it’s mainly because my streak is intact and I have a shot at the $3M. I wish I had gotten a streak going at the beginning of the season as opposed to the end. Players not starting and injuries are making this tough.

What an emotional rollercoaster. I’ve never needed a batter to get his only hit in extra innings. Well, I’ve seen it time and time again with picks of other BTS players, and silently cursed their good luck when it happened… until tonight: Josh Hamilton extends me for 1 more day with his only hit in the 10th. Whew!!!!

Awesome!! I had the same thing happen to me back a few weeks/month ago. It was in the bottom of the 9th and Ryan Zimmerman was up (my pick), and his count was 0-2 (maybe) and there were 2 out. He got a hit. I was so relieved. Only to have my pick the next day not get a hit and there went my streak.

Ditto Hamilton here. I was watching the game here and they were not giving him a zit to hit. We know what Giraldi’s game plan will be agasint TX now. Time to M. Young instead.

That 4 ball walk was a joke. AJ basically walked him intentionally.

BTW, is it me or did anyone notice Hamliton has a slight smarmy expression on his face? Maybe it was the expression of being pitched around.
