Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, August 27-29

480x270_AGon.jpg

Leader “sunhudson” asked for immediate Beat the Streak satiation
yesterday and his/her impatience was rewarded, as Jayson Werth singled
in the Phillies’ early afternoon loss to the Astros.

Werth’s base knock extended “sunhudson”‘s streak to a stellar 33-game
mark heading into the weekend. You know the deal, “sunhudson”, survive
the weekend and you’ll be featured in Monday’s BTS Report. And if that’s
not motivation, I don’t know what is.

Enough with the **** chat, let’s get to the weekend’s picks.

Here’s a little secret, Walt (we’re on a first-name basis, no?), do this
for 28 more days and you’ll know what it feels like to have one of the
obnoxious Ed McMahon checks. Only this one will be real.

Top MLB streakers

? Alberto Callaspo: 11 games

? Hideki Matsui: 10 games

? Daric Barton: 9 games

@wrightzone41 Can anyone explain to me how the September edition of BTS works? Just pick players starting in September.. and their are prizes? Do i need to make my selections in a different location? Or the same place I have been all season? Thanks

I don’t know!? would anybody else know?

  2. vinny1979

Hey eggs. They will announce it on the site but if you can get a 30 game streak in the month of Sept I forgot what you get. I think it’s a free month of mlb.tv the following season.

  3. btsplayer@yahoo.com

baseballgirlie: I think its a good a pick as anyone one of the candidates w/o having the benefit of a time machine. I am still contemplating. Even thinking about Angel Pagan now as he is betting lead off.

Only thing that I am a bit concerned about with Prado is I hope Infante and Heyward don’t steal all the hits batting in front of him. This happened to be many times and only when my hitter goes o-fer, I end cursing out the batters in front of him. Like I remember with Mauer, it was Span and Hudson that took all the hits.

Anyway, the future is impossible to tell for sure except make a most forseeable bet.

  4. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I am surprised to see both Pujols and Holli in the line-up. They were both injured in last night’s game. I crossed off Holli for that reason as he looked like a good pick.

  5. vinny1979

What’s up everybody. Thank god Pujols got two hits yesterday but I am good and here are my picks for tonight.

BTS-Michael Young, he is 5 for 8 against Anderson in his career and .331 against lefties this year so I love the odds.

HR BTS-Tex, Freddy Garcia hasn’t been pitching great but I’m hoping Tex hits a homer tonight.

Survivor-Texas, They are going to want to make a statement tonight against the A’s and prove they belong atop the division and Hunter is pitching so it’s all good.

  6. baseballgirlie13

I finally decided that I am going to go with Prado. I really want to got with Young but I cannot go with both. Young’s numbers are better against today’s pitcher but Prado is having a better year. I hope I don’t regret this choice. GL vinny with your pick and I will be hoping you get your hit today as well.

  7. 00liber

What up my bloggers. GL to all tonight.
I’m taking Matt Holliday as he’s hitting lefties at just over .300 and is 7-12 career vs Olsen.
    Hr going with Vernon wells
Surv going with cards. Why not?
    M

  8. 00liber

@btsplayer, holli got plunked on hand and removed as a precaution. He says he’s fine and even declined xrays. Albert twisted ankle in 11th and there’s some minor swelling. Neither injury should really affect either player. Hopefully.

  9. dragbunt104

Be careful of Pujols and Holliday – They could start the game but one twist of the wrist while hitting (Holliday) or a wrong pivot (Pujols) and they come out of the game. Could sink a nice BTS run. I’d suggest moving to another pick.
    Today it looks like:
    BTS – Infante
    HR – Cabrera
    Survivor – Reds

  10. dragbunt104

The BTS Sun Dial is really off. My post is at 3:55pm. 2 hours before the game closes on Friday. Check out the wrong BTS time below.

  11. doctorpeterose

Alright dragbunt, you scared me off Holliday (over whom I agonized all day). Holding you responsible.

Does anyone have ANY idea why Shawn Marcum is throwing .300 against RH this season, when he was throwing .237 and .200 in 07 and 08 before Tommy John?? What the hell…he was always better v. RH hitters and all of the sudden the scales are completely tipped the opposite way. Want to pick Cabrera but not confident…won’t pick Infante on grounds of he’s on a too long a streak (14 strong) and playing at home…

  12. champion_88

“Enough with the **** chat, let’s get to the weekend’s picks. ”

That just shows how random the BTS Report filter is!

  13. champion_88

“Hey eggs. They will announce it on the site but if you can get a 30 game streak in the month of Sept I forgot what you get. I think it’s a free month of mlb.tv the following season.”

I doubt it would be that, since that is the same prize you get for a 30-game streak in regular BTS.

That would sort of defeat the point of making a separate contest!

  14. champion_88

“Only thing that I am a bit concerned about with Prado is I hope Infante and Heyward don’t steal all the hits batting in front of him. This happened to be many times and only when my hitter goes o-fer, I end cursing out the batters in front of him. Like I remember with Mauer, it was Span and Hudson that took all the hits.”

I think it is a different thing though there.

People pitch around Mauer because of his 2009 numbers.

People really do not pitch around Prado.

The only reason he is even hitting 2nd is because Infante has been so amazing lately.

  15. yanksgiantsdevils33

Beat the Streak: Derek Jeter (been struggling but I believe he’ll come through and I was just reset yesterday so I have nothing to lose.)
Home Run: Albert Pujols (Good) Up to 2 for the first time this season.
    Survivor:Reds

  16. champion_88

“Survivor-Texas, They are going to want to make a statement tonight against the A’s and prove they belong atop the division and Hunter is pitching so it’s all good.”

Hunter had a 9.39 ERA in his last 5 starts before his last start where he beat the amazing Orioles, so I would not be so sure.

A good call by baseballgirlie on Prado! I went with him too after your support. I think what sealed for me was the home game advantage for Prado.

@champion88, I wasn’t worried about Prado being pitched around as more of 2 batters ahead of him gets like 2 to 3 hits each and leave nothing left on the table for Prado. Because both Infante and Heyward are very hot right now.

I will post tomorrow possible picks later tonight. Time to get dinner.

  19. 00liber

Did MLB change holliday’s second bat to a single? Yahoo has the scorin play as an error but the box says he’s 1-2?

  20. champion_88

Seem to be lots of scoring changes today.

My triple with Hanley Ramirez got changed to just a double and a throwing error.

Still got me to 2 though!

  21. yanksgiantsdevils33

What is wrong with Jeter this year? Another Jeter pick another 0 fer.
I did pick Albert Pujols in HR Beat the Streak and the Reds in survivor.

  22. baseballgirlie13

@btsplayer-Thanks!!! I’m glad I was able to help you decide on your pick haha!! I hope you don’t always pick who I do because I do not want to be the reason why you lose your streak. I will continue to post who I am going to pick but I am not sure for tomorrow. Right now I am leaning towards Torii Hunter or any Angel for that matter as Millwood is pitching and I think everyone will get a hit. Anyway, thanks again and GL tomorrow!!!

  23. baseballgirlie13

Hey everyone!!! I am having a tough time again day deciding who to pick. I want to pick an Angel but I can’t decide between Hunter and Howard Kendrick. Kendrick has been hot lately and he hits second so I think he will get a lot of at-bats (at least 4) and he hits Millwood well. Anyway, I guess I probably won’t know until closer to game time. GL to everyone else though.

  24. btsplayer@yahoo.com

@baseballgirlie13: i am divided between callaspo and Suzuki.

Millwood has turned things around a bit lately so I am concerned about him. His arch nemesis is the lefty bat. The problem with Callaspo is everything perfectly matches up and this is exactly when I pick the hitter that goes 0-fer. And his hitting is due to be over soon.

I am think Ichiro too because he will get 5 ABs because most likely MIN will take the game. His day time troubles are only against lefties. That is why he is his day avg is low. He actually hits lefties very well at night but does not hit righties any better.

    Too many uncomfortable choices here.

So I finally decided to go with Kendrick. I feel good about the pick though as he is facing Millwood. He has gotten a little better but I am never really scared to pick against him. We’ll see what happens. I am actually going to be on the road the rest of today and most of tomorrow so here is my pick for tomorrow…M. Cabrera. I know he is hot and is due for an 0-fer, but I don’t think it will happen tomorrow. I know he’s never faced the pitcher but I still feel pretty good about that one. GL to everyone and I will be back tomorrow, hopefully with my streak still intact, haha!!

  27. lavolpe

BTS: Only 99 people left with chance at 57-gamers
Survivor: Any resets from today, on, eliminate us from top prize unless post-Oct 3rd game happens.
Check back in a week and I’d imagine less than 50 on track to 57.

  28. lavolpe

Cabrera homers & 5 of those 99 move on. One resets cause the doof couldn’t make the time to make a selection.

  29. dragbunt104

    How do you spell MIRACLE!
Nursing a 2 game streak in HR BTS and took Bautista today and he triples————-no!!!!! There still is time.

  30. lavolpe

Here’s a slight twist on the Top2500, just cause I’m a bit bored this morning & whipped it up.
Of those 99 that started today with chance at 57… breakdown of their Saturday picks
    @ 31 picks: I.Suzuki
    @ 9: Ad.Gonzalez
    @ 8: J.Mauer
    @ 6: R.Braun
    @ 5: Mi.Cabrerra, T.Hunter
    @ 4: A.Ethier, P.Polanco
    @ 3: A.Callaspo, D.Jeter, A.Pujols
    @ 2: O.Infante, C.McGhee
    @ 1: all of the following…
    A.Beltre, M.Byrd, R.Cano, V.Guerrero, J.Hamilton, H.Kencrick, N.Markakis, H.Matsui, B.McCann, S.Schumaker, M.Teixiera, T.Tulowitzki, J.Votto, & No Selection

  31. lavolpe

@00liber: Kicking around? Nah, elminated & just tracking to see if anyone has a good run at 57. I see you are right at the edge of of the $10K prize. Good luck, though that goal is so far away at this point. I stopped playing except for Survivor & expect to stop that one too sometime this week šŸ™‚

  32. vinny1979

Hey Lav, glad to see you decided to post on the blog again man. Anyway here are my picks for today.
BTS-Asdrubal Cabrera, he has hit Greinke at a .462 clip over his career and he wasn’t even mentioned on the report for today at all and he is a sleeper for today if I ever saw one. We will see what happens at 7 PM.
HR BTS-Josh Hamilton, I’m hoping he hits one tonight. Has been hitting everybody lately and Braden isn’t the greatest so hoping for a Bomb today.
Survivor-Texas, they won last night with Hunter and hoping can continue his dominant pitching since he has been back.
    Good luck to all today.

  33. yanksgiantsdevils33

(Beat the Streak) Ichiro Suzuki (0 for 3) First time with 3 straight official 0 fers.
(although I had a 3 day span earlier with 2 o fers and a DNP which is essentially the same thing). If he stays 0 fer (1 AB left barring extra innings) nothing happens to me with lowly zero but according to lavolpe 31 will end up falling. I was bitterly eliminated from the $3 million prize on the 2nd possible day and got eliminated from $10,000 (in BTS) on Thursday.
(Home Run beat the Streak) Albert Pujols – I’m at 2 and I could not think of a better HR pick today (and I know AP is a bad pick today against Livan) so I’m praying for him to strike the pen later.
(Survivor) Reds- Also according to lavolpe any losses on survivor eliminate that/those user(s) from $10,000 prize contention. I’m at 1 so I need to win with 1 postponement to spare.

  34. lavolpe

Ummm, did I say check back next week and we’d see less than 50 going for 57? Tough day in BTS land. Mauer & Ichiro combined 0-fers take out 39 & Polanco iffy with 1 AB left. Going to be a bad day for the leaders unless some xtra innings come into play.

  35. yanksgiantsdevils33

It meant nothing to me but now Nick Blackburn ….. NICK BLACKBURN pitches a gem resulting in an 0 fer 4 Ichiro (despite lefty hitter vs. righty pitcher and a (6 for 12) .500 average off NB). This game is all about luck ….. BASEBALL is soooooooo UNPREDICTABLE at TIMES! Even Jason Marquee the worst starting pitcher in the majors 4 hit the Phillies!

  36. champion_88

“So I finally decided to go with Kendrick. I feel good about the pick though as he is facing Millwood. He has gotten a little better but I am never really scared to pick against him. Millwood was a good pitcher until this year though and has been doing better lately, so you should not automatically look at his name and think “scrub.”

The Orioles have been playing better as a whole as well.

As for Cabrera, the last time he faced a new rookie pitcher, he went 0 for 3.

I would get up extra early tomorrow and at least reconsider picking someone else based on the latest information.

  37. champion_88

“BTS-Asdrubal Cabrera, he has hit Greinke at a .462 clip over his career and he wasn’t even mentioned on the report for today at all and he is a sleeper for today if I ever saw one. We will see what happens at 7 PM.”

Didn’t we just go through a whole big discussion a few days ago on how batting average against the opposing pitcher usualy has little correlation to whether or not that batter gets a hit?

And then you go ahead and pick a guy solely on that reasoning against an ace?

No wonder no one gets to 57!

“HR BTS-Josh Hamilton, I’m hoping he hits one tonight. Has been hitting everybody lately and Braden isn’t the greatest so hoping for a Bomb today.”

Didn’t Dallas Braden throw a perfect game against the Rays this year?

    Hardly a terrible pitcher!

  38. champion_88

“It meant nothing to me but now Nick Blackburn ….. Even Jason Marquee the worst starting pitcher in the majors 4 hit the Phillies!”

    This post isn’t fair.

Blackburn has been pitching much better since being demoted to the bullpen and since returning to the rotation.

    I didn’t expect a 2-hitter, but more like 6 or 7 hits.

Ichiro was an OK pick today, but probably not even in the Top 5.

Also, Jason Marquis had a few horrific starts and then went on the disabled list.

Since coming back, he has been OK.

And he did not 4-hit the Phillies.

He only went 5 IP in that game.

  39. lavolpe

@champ88: “And he did not 4-hit the Phillies.”
To be fair, the Phillies only got 4 hits, off of Marquis, and the pen shut them down for the final 4.
The leader falls today. Teixiera was his pick & pulled early in the game while 0-1.

  40. yanksgiantsdevils33

The leader falls today. Teixiera was his pick & pulled early in the game while 0-1.

If that were me i would have no words. I would be in shock and probably faint at that result. Being in the game for 1 O fer appearance weather it’s injury, ejection or pinch hitting is the cruelest way to go down. I can’t begin to imagine what sunhudson is thinking. He was one hit away from getting a $50 gift card but much more importantly 10 away from the consolation and still in grand prize contention. At least 41 have been cleared from contention and others are on current 0 fers that are still playing.

  41. yanksgiantsdevils33

Bad luck with Pujols on Home Run Beat the Streak. He hit a ground rule double. I was at 2 for the first time this year on the 14th try, now I’m back to 0.

  42. yanksgiantsdevils33

I am a CHOKEARTIST in beat the streak and survivor. Eliminated from the grand survivor prize on the first possible day with the Reds losing to the Cubs. With Ichiro going 0 for 4 and Pujols not homering it’s the 1st time in like a month that I’ve failed on all 3 games.

  43. lavolpe

Any Cubbies out there glad to see the Cards 4 games out of 1st and 2 games out of Wild Card?
Gotta be honest here, I’m a die-hard Cubs fan and wouldn’t even think of cheering for their opponents. Though I still won’t, it really wouldn’t bother me too much if Cubs lost tomorrow to the Reds, preventing the Cards from gaining a game in the standings. Even better if Nationals win.
Cubs were a big disappointment this year. Hearing it from STL fans makes this season even harder to bear. If the Cards don’t make the postseason, then that will make my season. And I’ll be glad to let the Cards fans hear how bad they choked the 2nd half! So… Go Nats, Go Stros

  44. lavolpe

@yanksgiantsdevils33: You can hope for a Oct 4th game which is not out of the realm of possibility. Start a streak tomorrow, if you get reset again, then accept the outcome. That’s my plan as I got reset tonight also.

  45. champion_88

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If you got reset tonight, could you play for a tie with no tiebreaker games played or were you already playing for a tie, coming into tonight?

  46. lavolpe

@champ88: Me? Talking about getting to 37 in Survivor. I care nothing for the consolation prize in that game. With 37 games left coming into today, mathematically eliminated from the top prize unless Oct 4th game happens.

  47. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I think there is a good chance Kendrick might get 2 more ABs if LAA gets some baserunners going here for baseballgirlie. I just hope she makes it.

  48. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Mike Soccia does not make any sense. I really don’t like him as a manager. So you have runners on the corner with 2 outs and you have guy batting miserably below .200 and you have Juan Rivera sitting on the bench. I guess he doesn’t like to win games.

  49. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I guess Teix going down after 1AB is the freak accident of this year’s BTS. His streak wasn’t above 40 but this year there hasn’t been that many high streakers as last year. Poor dude. I would cry if that happened to me. He was close yet far but not far enough to dream. And I thought he was actually making pretty good picks. Much better than Dick or Southhampton guy.

And what is chance of Teix not getting on the Hit Parade Train? He was due for a hit to begin with not hitting last 2 days.

  50. lavolpe

Highly unlikely baseballgirlie13 will get a 5th AB today. If not, Kendrick takes her down & Polanco takes down forcook. So the last 2 bloggers group members that had a chance at big bucks fall tonight. Too bad

  51. btsplayer@yahoo.com

And I thought Polanco was a pretty good pick. I was watching the game and he got some good rips the first 2 ABs. The 2nd AB was an unlucky one as the SD 3rd baseman made a good timing leap to steal a hit.

I knew at that point it was over for Polanco because to me he got his hit even though he was robbed. I didn’t see him getting 2 hits today.

Here is hoping that LAA makes a comeback in the 9th.

  52. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I guess to rub salt to the wounds, the BTS God decides to play with us even more by taking out Teix and having 2 worst pitchers the league pitch shutouts. This is my fourth year playing and this year has been the absolutely the worst.

“The 2nd AB was an unlucky one as the SD 3rd baseman made a good timing leap to steal a hit.”
And having him sac bunt on 3rd AB didn’t help his pickers.

“And having him sac bunt on 3rd AB didn’t help his pickers.”

Yeah. That totally blew. I really didn’t think they were gonna let Polanco bunt.

Well last game in the books, that makes 49 out of 99 players having chance at $3M drop tonight. Just 50 left. Rough.

    “This post isn’t fair.

Blackburn has been pitching much better since being demoted to the bullpen and since returning to the rotation.”

    THIS post isn’t fair.

Blackburn pitched one game from the bullpen, and gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs in 2 innings of work.

He’s had one game (before this unpredictable anomaly against the god awful mariners) since returning to the rotation, in which he gave up 8 hits in 7 innings. Certainly not terrible, but good numbers for the purposes of this game; and not enough to make his 12.6 h/9 ratio budge.

  57. lavolpe

@doctorpeterose: There are a couple/few of those a month. Almost guaranteed gimme, stats-wise, where majority pick him and he goes 0-fer. The ones that get high streaks in this game seem to luckily avoid those picks. If not for these occassional slaughters, I think we’d have a top-streak prize winner every year.

Not a believer in jinxes, so I’ll post this again today. Yesterday I posted it for 1st time and 50% ended the day reset.

    @5: C.Crawford

I am locked in on Ichiro. It seems all picks including mine are iffy. I liked Infante but I was afraid Johnson finally decides to pitch better. Hanley’s high avg against Lowe worried me plus he still cannot hit day time. Even this month when he is really hot. I also like Migeul. I think he is the pick I will regret if Ichiro burns me again.

  60. btsplayer@yahoo.com

I am regretting my pick already. Miguel just doubles on the first at bat. This guy should be the MVP. He puts up the #s while playing in a park that is hard to hit HRs and lot less protection in the line-up. One of the Yankees announcers said the park cost him probably 8 HRs already this year (that was when DET was playing the NYY). Hamilton’s #s are so juiced for home that he is akin to Holliday when he played in COL.

Pujols and Votto are also both good now too. NYY/CWS are in rain delay.
How can someone with a 23 game streak not make a pick?WTF?

@00Liber: How can someone with a 23 game streak not make a pick?WTF?
Mark, I recall earlier in the year (June maybe?). A 29-gamer didn’t make a streak. Now that is insane.

LaV ” Mark, I recall earlier in the year (June maybe?). A 29-gamer didn’t make a streak. Now that is insane.”
Keith, ya I remember that one. I think we came to the conclusion that she didn’t wait up on the Sunday night to see that pujols got a last at bat hit, then it was an early lock on Monday. She just assumed that Puj went 0-fer.

  65. lavolpe

Mauer & Adam Jones not in Sunday’s lineups. Pinch hitting possible, at least if they don’t play they don’t eliminate their pickers from $3M as each has a game or two to spare.

  66. lavolpe

Cubbie fan here. We all know an acronym for Cubs: completely useless by September
Trying to think of one for the Cardinals. Deadbirds is ok, but something more to inflame their fans should they not make the playoffs. Maybe an acronym for Cards could be: choking aids Reds division supremacy

  67. lavolpe

2 leader changes in 2 days. Infante takes down current leader. Millionaire list of potentials dwindling every day. At least 6 more removed from that list today, maybe a few more before midnight.

  68. lavolpe

Like watching a horror flick. Not many come out alive this weekend. Started with 99 having a chance at $3 million entering Saturday. Over these 2 days, 3 couldn’t handle the pressure & committed suicide with a “No Selection”, while 66 went down kicking & swinging. Just 30 remaining now. Crawford & Ortiz may have their turn adding to the mayhem later tonight by removing 6 more, maybe not.

  69. dragbunt104

Got to take in the ChiSox v. NYY at the Cell today.
Sunny and hot – no rain at all as mentioned in previous post.
Report: Juan Pierre and AJ Pierczynski remain hot
“Sunshine Boy” Alex Rios goes hitless
Troy Tulowitzki got a hit in today’s day game to keep his daytime hit streak in tact.

oh sorry, I guess I was looking at the wrong pitcher, but even still, you really could not expect the Mariners to pick up more than 4 or 5 hits against Blackburn if the Rangers could only get 8 hits.

Eh, but Ichiro normally screws up in favorable matchups.

Not sure why, but he has consistently done that for years.

He is a much better pick in marginal situations.

And you had to expect SOME improvement for a guy with a 6.50 ERA to be let back into the rotation.

I still don’t get why she would go to bed early, since it was only an 800 PM start that did not go into extra innings.

I mean is a 29-game hit streak not worth staying up until 1130 PM and/or putting in a placeholder pick just in case?
