Beat the Streak Report: Monday, August 30

480x270_Hanley.jpg

A new week and a new leader tops the Beat the Streak leaderboard.

Hanley Ramirez’s first-inning tater translated into a 30-game streak for “jpells10”, our new ruler of the universe.

Ramirez was the day’s most popular pick, extending the streak of 9.7 percent of BTSLand in a fruitful day at the park.

The BTS countdown is now officially at 35, meaning all those with
22-game streaks or better are still alive in this crazy little game
called love.

Time for Monday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Hanley Ramirez: .500 AVG (6-for-12) lifetime vs. Nationals starter Jason Marquis

? Troy Tulowitzki: .412 AVG (7-for-17) lifetime vs. Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez

? Scott Podsednik: .417 AVG (5-for-12) lifetime vs. Phillies starter Roy Halladay

Feeling kinda spicy?

? Jack Cust: .600 AVG (6-for-10) lifetime vs. Yankees starter Dustin Moseley

? Ryan Doumit: .471 AVG (8-for-17) lifetime vs. Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano

You’ll thank me later …

? Angel Pagan: .059 AVG (1-for-12) lifetime vs. Braves starter Jair Jurrjens

? Ryan Howard: .000 AVG (0-for-8) lifetime vs. Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda

? Ryan Braun: .182 AVG (2-for-11) lifetime vs. Reds starter Homer Bailey

? David Wright: .188 AVG (3-for-16) lifetime vs. Marlins starter Anibal Sanchez

Leaderboard time!

Playing understudy and hoping for strep throat for “jpells10” is “bretzky26” who is riding high with a 28-game streak.

Now if “bretzky26” can just double that then we’ll really be in business here.

Top MLB streakers

? Miguel Cabrera: 12 games

? Matt Holliday: 11 games

? Paul Konerko: 10 games

? Ryan Raburn: 10 games

? Ryan Theriot: 10 games

? Troy Tulowitzki: 10 games

35? Where is that tally coming from? Got some hidden members group not showing up on the standings pages? I count 30 with 22+ gamers.

    @lavolpe
    From the weekend blog:

@yanksgiantsdevils33: You can hope for a Oct 4th game which is not out of the realm of possibility. Start a streak tomorrow, if you get reset again, then accept the outcome. That’s my plan as I got reset tonight also.

I seem to lose every other day as their seems to be survivor massacres 3 out of every 4 days and very few times do I avoid the slaughters. There have been so many clearings over the past 6 days that the leader is at 11 and you can appear on page one with a streak of 5! With that being the case can I avoid the traps today? My survivor pick: Marlins
    Beat the Streak: Josh Hamilton
    Home Run: Hideki Matsui

Yep, so what are the odds anyone will make it to 37 in Survivor, especially now? One day at a time until reset. I’m at a streak of 1 and if the end of season occurs on 3 Oct, and I end up with 36 I’ll just shake my head in disgust! Though, I’m not holding my breath.

So my career long streak ended on Saturday with Howard Kendrick going 0-4 against Millwood. It was a fun ride while it lasted. It’s too bad that this streak had to come at the end of the year when I don’t have a chance to start over again. I hope one of the remaining 30 or so people can make it to 57. I think it’s possible (very tough for sure) and I hope someone can make it. GL to all who still have a chance. For everyone else, I’ll be back again next year.

  5. 00liber

Hey all. Looking for my 5th 10gm streak of the season and will be going with Hamilton. GL all.
@baseballgirlie, great run, too bad it had to come to an end. See you next season.

@baseballgirlie13 and forcook if he/she checks this blog:
Nice run on your streaks, its ashame they had to end good luck next year. I’m practicing for next year and will quit if I can no longer beat my longest streak of 17.

  7. lavolpe

CAUTION: Tulo was pulled in the 8th last night with hamstring problem, correct? If so, may not be in lineup today.

@00liber and yanksgiantsdevils- thanks guys!! I will keep playing too even though I cannot even win the $10,000 prize. I will keep using my strategy and see if it works for the remainder of the season. Too bad there is such a long wait until April, haha!!

@dragbunt: “He (Starlin) almost has enough at-bats to qualify for batting title consideration”
If I’m not mistaken, one needs 502+ plate appearances to qualify for batting title. Looking at his stat sheet, he has 405 entering today, 131 games played. Doable, if he plays nearly every 31 of the remaining games. But with a 310 BA, he’ll need to step it up to overcome CarGon, Pujols, Votto & Prado. Don’t think it is likely.
Look at Infante, 341 BA but only 360 PA. With 32 games remaining, he’d need 4.4 PA per game or (4 PA per game & 14 of those games 5 PA, playing all remaining games). Unlikely.

  12. lavolpe

@yanksgiantsdevils33: “I could be eliminated from 37 (if there is an extra game on Oct 4) with a postponement too. Marlins are in a rain delay.”
Don’t feel too bad if it happens, it could be worse. Two players with 22 gamers would be eliminated from $3M if no Oct 4th game & FLA is rained out tonight.

  13. yanksgiantsdevils33

I could be eliminated from 37 (if there is an extra game on Oct 4) with a postponement too. Marlins are in a rain delay.
I’m playing for pride in Beat the Streak (and on the brink of it in survivor too) back up to 2 with Josh Hamilton.

  14. yanksgiantsdevils33

Nats/Marlins is underway. An 8 game streak took the Nats which is smart because i took the Marlins and I lose every other day and I won with the Giants yesterday. The user of another 8 game streak couldn’t remember to pick forfeiting any chance for $10,000.

  15. dragbunt104

Cubs Starlin Castro doubles in the bottom of the 1st. He almost has enough at-bats to qualify for batting title consideration. Don’t count him out of the batting title race. This kid can hit.

  16. dragbunt104

    Tuesday
Cubs Blake DeWitt is 6 – 6 v. Pirates starter Karstens.
Seems to good to be true. He also is not playing lately.

  17. yanksgiantsdevils33

Oh no Zimmerman homers 4-1 Nats officially playinf fro pride now and grey.switzer must be a super genius! It was good for the Hanley Ramierez pickers who are now good with a home run of his own in the 1st inning.

goober85 wrote: “@00liber and yanksgiantsdevils- thanks guys!! …”
Odd. 00liber & yanks comments were aimed at baseballgirlie13. Did she make a mistake and let us know she is playing under 2 accounts? Hmmmm, very interesting.

  19. yanksgiantsdevils33

    Hideki Matsui Homers!
My earlier post meant to say that I’m plating for pride in BTS and survivor.

  20. lavolpe

Well, a 2-hit complete game shutout by HOU’s Happ & Pujols going 0-3 ended 7 more $3M streakers. Tomorrow those that are left will fit on just the 1st page. But more importantly, the Cards lost again! If CIN wins tonight, STL is 6 games out. Only other possible reset is with Callaspo, assuming FLA game goes final.

  21. yanksgiantsdevils33

8-3 Nats My sorry survivor pattern over the last 8 days.
WLWLWLWL. Can anyone win even 4 straight these days? That game is impossible and getting to 10 seems very hard. 37? Are you kidding me no one is getting close!

  22. 00liber

No offense to any of my bloggers, cause I really could care less about the NL,(Rangers and Yanks for me) but StL will smarten up shortly and make a run. And correct me if I’m wrong but don’t StL and Fla have a game to make up? I’m pretty sure I read somewhere StL has no more days off so would that not mean an oct 4th game?

  23. lavolpe

by me: “Did she make a mistake and let us know she is playing under 2 accounts? Or possibly forcook replying as goober85”.
Nope, not forcook. It certainly appears baseballgirlie13 is also goober85. Going back to Wed (via Top2500 listings), goober85 & baseballgirlie picked same players every day but one & on that day both were the same team. Sometimes I think I watch too many cops & robbers shows.
P.S. goober15 wouldn’t have wrote that post as goober15 because he/she stated “cannot even win the $10,000 prize” though goober15 is on track to reach 48.

  24. lavolpe

@00Liber. STL only makeup is 20 Sep (other games scheduled too). Oct 4th game would have to be result of a future rainout or 1-game playoff

  25. btsplayer@yahoo.com

What a bust. Ichiro comes through in flying colors. The exact day after he perishes my run for the grand burrito this year. I hate you Ichio. I hate you so much. You destroyed 80% of my streaks this year. Next year, just go on DL and don’t bother me. I hate you so much.

  26. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Ichrio you do suck so much this year. Why? Why is that the year after you sign a very lucrative contract with all kinds of happy endings do you suck so badly? Two days in a row you couldn’t hit awful pitchers and today you hit a much better pitcher? You know who sucks more than Ichiro. Derek Jeter. I think he is spending too much time hanging with his gf.

Actually, there is a strange pattern of players sucking big ones after they sign their lucrative contract. Even Hanley sucked all year until this week.

  27. btsplayer@yahoo.com

Wow. This is year, throwing a no hitter is like eating a cake. Kuroda has one going with 9 outs left. If trend continues next year, all of us are finished.

  28. lavolpe

6 outs left. If Dodgers do no-hit Philly, that will be 1 no-hitter each month of this season. Wonder if that ever happened before in baseball history. I’m sure ESPN would let us know šŸ™‚

  29. baseballgirlie13

@lavolpe-I wasn’t really playing with two accounts. This is what happened. My husband stopped playing when he could not win the $3 million so I just filled out under his account the same players I was picking. When he “picked” Torii Hunter and I went with Howard Kendrick, I had meant to pick Kendrick for him as well. When I lost I stopped picking for him as well I just had some people picked three days in advance so today is the last day there will be anyone picked under his account. So I wasn’t really playing two. His account never could have won without mine winning first. Either way, his is done after today just to clear that up.

  30. bravesfanforlife88

@baseballgirlie- well it’s good you are going to stop playing his account now. I see what you mean where you would have won before him but MLB would have disqualified you none the less had you won with your account. They are very stringent when it comes to playing with two accounts and I’m pretty sure there would be no way to talk yourself out of that one. Congrats on your streak though, pretty impressive, especially since I have never got into the 20’s.

  31. lavolpe

The two-accounts aside, shame your hubby decided not to continue on. I would think a shot at $10K is worth continuing until eliminated mathematically.

  32. champion_88

“Look at Infante, 341 BA but only 360 PA. With 32 games remaining, he’d need 4.4 PA per game or (4 PA per game & 14 of those games 5 PA, playing all remaining games). Unlikely.”

I would say it is actually pretty LIKELY.

I mean, as a leadoff hitter, he is pretty much GUARANTEED to pick up at least 4 PA per game.

First off he has 365 PA’s already, not 360.

Secondly, if you look back at his last 31 games played, he picked up 143 PA’s.

If you add that to the 365 PA’s he already has, you get a total of 508 PA’s.

So you have room for 1 day off and 6 extra PA’s worth of error.

  33. champion_88

“8-3 Nats My sorry survivor pattern over the last 8 days.
WLWLWLWL. Can anyone win even 4 straight these days? That game is impossible and getting to 10 seems very hard. 37? Are you kidding me no one is getting close!”

That happened during a very favorable 6-8 week environment a couple years ago.

    You think 36 is impressive?

Try 28+ on the entire 1st page!

The guy that made it to 36 was different from the others though, so I am glad he won.

EVERY freaking team this guy picked was winning 6-0 in the 3rd inning.

It was insane how much run support he got.

I piled together a 17-game winning streak in that environment.

The leader and I were both eliminated when Joe Nathan blew a save in the 9th inning, but wholly because of a fielding error to start the inning.

The Twins lost in extra innings to the Mariners.

Which would increase odds of having an October 5th game!

    That makes no sense though.

How would having 2 accounts help you win if you picked the same player every day?

  36. champion_88

“6 outs left. If Dodgers do no-hit Philly, that will be 1 no-hitter each month of this season. Wonder if that ever happened before in baseball history. I’m sure ESPN would let us know :)”

Yeah, I think it has happened before, because I remember seeing that stat before and I think it said, “for the first time since year X.”

  37. champion_88

“When I lost I stopped picking for him as well I just had some people picked three days in advance so today is the last day there will be anyone picked under his account.”

I don’t understand what the point was of continuing to pick for him after his streak was snapped, if you never intended on continuing with it?

    I am so confused!
