Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, April 22-24

Well, wasn’t that quite the nice little Thursday, Streakers?

Yesterday’s four most popular selections all turned out to be winning scratch-off tickets, earning a combined 26.4 percent of you … another scratch-off ticket.

Gordon Beckham also took a 0-for-0 pass, which in this stretched analogy would be like the 7-Eleven guy selling you a defective lottery ticket which was neither a winner nor a loser but still took like three hours to scratch off because you never know when it might pinch-hit for Omar Vizquel. That makes sense, right?

Anywho, the weekend is upon us and new streaking opportunities abound. Only 13 of you boast longer bids than Andre Ethier‘s current 18-gamer, and Andre has a significantly harder degree of difficulty considering he has to pick himself every single day. Yes, batting in front of baseball cyborg Matt Kemp helps. No, not as much as having 200-plus players to choose from on a daily basis. Step it up, Streakaz.

Leaderboard time!

Gottaweartheshades was apparently blinded by Logan Morrison‘s foot injury yesterday, taking a pass as the outfielder sat out against the Pirates and was later placed on the DL. While the 0-for-0 doesn’t break our eye-protected friend’s 21-game streak, it does end an impressive run of 21 correct picks in as many days to start the season. Hope you enjoyed your moment in the sun, sir/ma’am/robot. Now you’re just another Streaker with a pick and a dream.

Lots of rain forecasted in streakland today. Pujols/Votto lovers, may want to look to another game. Here in STL, weather may invite a PPD and double header possibly tomorrow.

  2. 00liber

Had Starlin locked in but due to inclement weather in Chicago, not taking the chance there so Im going with Tulo tonight.

  3. baseballgirlie13

Going with Montero today. He not only hits Pelfrey well but he hits extremely well in New York as well. 11-24 at Citi Field. Hoping to get to 8.

  4. LaVolpe

If Eithier goes 0-fer tomorrow, not only will I be reset but so will a ton of others. A true Cubby fan, I hate to pick against them due to loyalty. But with the wind howling out to left center and Ethier’s success vs HR-giving Dempster, I have little choice but to pick tomorrow what I consider and obvious choice. For today’s game, I’m moving indoors with Braun.

  5. vinny1979

@gpearson, I agree with Braun and there are 8 possible games today that have rain in the forecast for game time so choose wisely. Dodgers/Cubs is one of those games.

    • LaVolpe

If one looks at Braun’s #s vs. Figueroa I can understand not agreeing with my pick. But let me put it this way: Figgy is averaging 8 hits allowed per game, righties hitting 360 against him & pitches worse away than at home. Braun on the other hand, 9 hits in last 5 games @ a .450 clip and his splits are outstanding so far. So I decided to simply ignore that horrible past history stat and the above is part of reason why I chose Braun; not attempting to change anyone’s mind, only clarification

      • LaVolpe

P.S. On days when I actually do the research I am 100% in my picks or predictions. For example, I picked/predicted Pujols breakout game in Arizona and predicted Wright’s breakout game last night. We’ll see if my pick of a .111 hitter vs. Figgy is correct or not.

  6. LaVolpe

Read something on gameday yesterday that I thought was interesting and stunk big time for Choo pickers… With men on 1st & 2nd, “Shin-Soo Choo lines into a force out, left fielder Alex Gordon to third baseman Wilson Betemit.” Ugh, that means what would have been a sure single turns into a force-out because Sizemore (on 2nd) was either unsure the ball would be caught, slipped, or something else. Bad luck, Choo went 0-fer

    • champion_88

I see they have redesigned the interface, since the last mini-gameday update, so I share in your enthusiasm!

Too bad there is only 1 game right now.

The real funny part is that, for some reason, my desktop cannot run classic gameday, but it can run the mini gameday, which is built off the classic gameday template.

  7. Dodgerlu

I had Matt Kemp going but since the game most likely won’t be completed I’ve been convinced to go with Braun to hopefully ride me to 9. What put me over-the-top was his extension yesterday which may hopefully make him have a great day today.

Leader picked V-Mart? Taking a chance to drop to 2nd as V-Mart is on the DL. Maybe the strategy is to wait for a potential “gimme” pick?

    • gpearson17

Can you pick a guy on the DL? Martinez went on the DL on Tuesday, so this pick had to be made on or before that day, right?

      • LaVolpe

One strategy ppl employ is to pick someone going on DL for the next 9 days since you can pick 10 days out. That way if you are unsure or unavailable to make a pick, it is considered a safe pick. A 20/21 gamer is a nice streak but barely over a 3rd of the way there. I wouldn’t allow others to catch up or pass me up. Maybe if I was near 40, my strategy might employ DL players while I waited for a no-brainer pick?

      • schenk015

i think the v-mart pick is a smart strategy. yes 21 games is just over a third of the way there but everyone who has played this game knows that if you lose a streak over 10 games its extremely difficult to even get back to 10. so to say he should make a pick when hes not that confident while at a streak of 21 is just plain stupid. hes better off just waiting until he finds a pick hes happy with

      • LaVolpe

Well, let’s see, he picked to DL players back-back. If he picks 1 player on average every 2-3 days and at 21 games now, he’ll need another 37 to get to 57. At 2.5 days per pick, that would mean another 92-ish days from now to get to 57. Too risky in my opinion with a relatively low streak overall. Like I said, I’d consider it if I was in the 40s and enough days were left to be that patient. But to each their own & we are simply guessing. Maybe he/she is out of town and can’t do the research?

      • LaVolpe

And when I said too risky, I was referring to the ability to restart and have enough days left to get another large streak going. Getting back to back large streaks would be a huge task IMO

      • champion_88

I also think that it probably is that he is away for the weekend and would rather lose when he has time to do the research.

Even if V-Mart was healthy, why would you pick him?

      • LaVolpe

If anyone wants to play the DL game, add Angel Pagan to your next 9 picks. Per rotoworld, he’s going on the DL

      • Nymets1979

LOL! I WAS confident on day one that I’d have won by day 57. It’s not going so well.

      • LaVolpe

I wasn’t that confident, but I thought I’d have a double digit streak in April. Can still get it if I get thru the month without another reset. Baby steps in confidence

  10. champion_88

By the way, I went with Troy Tulowitzki today.

Today’s sleeper picks for me are Lance Berkman and Jason Kubel.

  11. LaVolpe

Anyone else following the FLA/COL game. No hitter thru 8. MLB channel and probably ESPN now will cut into the 9th.

  12. vinny1979

I am watching the Col/Fla game right now. I have the baseball package but since Bourn got his hit I switched over.

    • LaVolpe

Hmmm. STL kept their pitcher but CIN changed to a lefty pitcher. Will that be a good thing or bad thing for those that picked Theriot, Rasmus, Pujols, Holliday & Berkman?

      • LaVolpe

And with the lopsided score, odds are that he won’t be intentionally walked next time. Not only that, HOU has no lefties in their pen and the pitching quality Fielder will face may not be very good. Yes, colored lucky.

      • Nymets1979

Ok, not so lucky. And the thing that sucks the most is that nearly every other player on MIL got a hit. Guess it was a good thing I was already at zero.

  13. LaVolpe

Regarding that STL game. Got lightening & thunder, but not much rain here. Maybe that game will be played.

  14. champion_88

Quite a discrepancy between the hit strength from MLB.com’s writers and the result:

“Dexter Fowler rips a ground ball into right field for a single,”

But it looks like the 2nd baseman pulls up short and he could have dove and knocked it down.

Not sure if he could have thrown out Fowler, but if the ball bounced off his glove, couldn’t the scorer have been creative and given the 2nd baseman an error?

Not much he can do when the ball does not even touch him.

  15. gpearson17

Wow, lots of good picks for Saturday. But how can you go against Ethier’s numbers, with a dry forecast, and the wind blowing out at Wrigley?

    • LaVolpe

Answer: You pick him or pick someone else who will get a hit and hope Ethier fails. But if it backfires on you, you kick yourself. I think he’ll be highly picked but not #1. The masses don’t do the research some of us bloggers do. All they see is his #s. And when you look at Cano’s #s, it will be more attractive for the masses; just thinking out loud

      • LaVolpe

Ah check that. BAL changed pitchers for today’s game. I think I’ll do some further looking myself

      • champion_88

I still see Bergesen for Saturday on the Probables’ page.

Did you read someone else elsewhere?

      • LaVolpe

Yes. It was Chris Tillman where Cano was 7-9 against him. If you look at Dave’s picks for today (above), you’ll see that too. I don’t know when/why they bumped Tillman

      • champion_88

Oh, I usually look at the current day’s matchups after the previous day’s games have all gone final, since I like using the most updated and accurate information possible.

The only difference is if I will be away for the weekend, but even then, I usually stay up in the middle of the night at someone’s house making my picks.

It is not as hard now too, since we only have the one contest to deal with here.

  16. 00liber

@Dave, and anyone else playing streak for the cash on ESPN, we’ve got a public group if you care to join. search BTS Bloggers group. Right now its myself and baseballgirlie.

    • champion_88

I tried doing that last year, but I never could quite remember to do it, as there were way more contests here last year.

I already had to break down all the teams, all the HR hitters, and all the hitters.

It was a shame too because I had already done all the homework for the ESPN contest too, but I could just never remember to put the picks in.

  17. 00liber

@LaV, I sent you yesterday’s stat file. Hopefully you can pull today and tomorrow. I’m not doing it today, too tired. GL all today. I’m joining the masses going with Ethier.

  22. LaVolpe

I feel soooo guilty. A Cubby by birth, here I am hoping Ethier gets a hit to up my streak knowing if he does runs will score and Cubs will be losing late in the game. So he does get a hit, 2 runs score, and what comes out of my mouth is “Yes”, followed by a loud “crud!”

      • LaVolpe

If the Cubs can come back and at least tie, my feelings of betrayal will at least be minimized. I thought I’d be happy to continue the streak; sometimes I hate being a die-hard fan 😦

      • gpearson17

I picked Drew of AZ against the Reds on Thursday, and I was happy for his hit. I just remind myself that it didn’t happen BECAUSE of me. It’s not betrayal to look on the bright side of something that’s otherwise negative. Also, it’s not like the Cubs are playing the evil Cards or anything. 😀

      • champion_88

I love how you were content with them simply tying the game.

If they just tied and lost, they could have won if Ethier didn’t get his hit!

  23. LaVolpe

I know the BTS gods will punish the less-informed at some point, but there are picks from leaders that confuse me. For example, a 19-gamer picked A.Rios (0-fer last 5 games). And another one: a 20-gamer picked Votto. Ok, Votto is a great hitter but is going against Carpenter & he isn’t pitching his best lately. Maybe Rios is due? But is your risk worth it? Isn’t there better picks? Maybe my personal fears are clouding my understanding, or maybe some of the leaders are just riding a 3-week lucky streak and wear rabbits feet in place of jewelry?

      • champion_88

It is amazing how horrible Holliday hits when I consider him.

Glad I switched because of the heavy rain expected there and how that allowed me to give him a 2nd chance this season and not lose anything.

Holliday should be the feature player of the DNP list.

      • yanksgiantsdevils33

Matt Holliday ended my 2010 opening 10 game streak with an O fer, I’ve got to be very cautious about picking him.

  24. champion_88

Swisher is a sleeper for tomorrow.

Hit the ball hard twice in the Yankees’ 15-run game and was the only starter to go 0 for.

    • yanksgiantsdevils33

I had Swisher in this last season against Arrieta and that ended my 17 game streak. Swisher is O fer 7 agaisnt Arrieta all time with at least 1 Sac Fly so he is 0 for 8 for BTS purposes. I’m taking A-Rod today.

  25. LaVolpe

If the score holds in TEX so they don’t bat in 9th, co-leader falls with A.Beltre. But the leader that’s been on the DL for 3 days has 2 more tied with him now instead of just one… Looks like 3 co-leaders tomorrow

A-Rod was going to my pick also, but my gut said to move to CWS game which backfired for me. Still a chance of a tie, otherwise not looking good for A-Rod nor Cano. I’ll be looking to get back to one & so will some of you I’m afraid

  27. yanksgiantsdevils33

A Rod flew out to end the 10th. Cano will lead off 11th, A-Rod pickers will need at least a 12th inning and maybe a 13th.

  28. yanksgiantsdevils33

At least the Yankees are winning the game: Cano pickers got their hit, A-Rod gets left on Deck, thanks a lot Swisher and Gardner for striking out. 😡

    • yanksgiantsdevils33

A Rod major sacrifice. Votto and Pujols to play later. Could I have the only player in the top 15 to go O fer? I wish I knew how to predict walks. lol 😦 :A
