Beat the Streak Report: Tuesday, May 3

The Ethier Express rolled into 28-game station last night, meaning that our hero is now halfway to matching Joe DiMaggio’s record 56-game streak. Twenty players have reached the midpoint since 1992, but none have come closer to the Yankee Clipper than Jimmy Rollins‘ 36-gamer in 2005.

Will Andre be the one? Possibly. Should you make him your BTS special someone every day until he lets you down? Judge Mills Lane will allow it.

Over 10 percent of you drank that Kool-Aid last night, as Ethier trailed only Matt Holliday (13.9 percent, 1-for-4) in our daily popularity contest. Bronze medalist Marlon Byrd also converted, sending another 6.7 percent of all Streakers home happy.

Bask in that glow for a few more hours, kids. We’re doin’ the dang thang again tonight at 6:35.

93 streakers have a chance to get to or remain at 20+ streaks today. Don’t know about you all, but I find this number somewhat alarming. The inability of pitchers to get the good hitters out & the number of extra inning games this year have proven to be a feast unlike last year’s famine of the “year of the pitcher”.
Yes, those 20+ streakers are barely over a third of the way to the prize as of now. But I think that if we don’t see some mass resetting over then next 2-3 weeks, this could be the year!
Also those 93 today are just a snapshot. Looks like you can expect about 25 or more each day moving from 18 to 19 trying to get to 20 the following day. This simply means an average of 25+ resets daily needed from those in 19+ range just to keep zero population growth. We’re going to need some unexpected 0-fers to reduce this overcrowding or this game can possibly be over by the All-Star break. Here’s hoping history repeats itself & some normalization occurs before then…

Oh and I am giving this opinion based from a standpoint of a low streak. But for those in double digits and less than 20, feelings could be similar. If it is easy for you to increase your streak, those above you are increasing also (except maybe gottawheretheshades). Hard to overtake those above you if they are not being reset; kinda like chasing your tail.

Doom and gloom may be premature. I took a look at last year’s stats for 3 May. I don’t know how many 20+ gamers there were ’cause I wasn’t tracking streaks until July 4th, just rankings. May 3rd last year we did have 3 29-gamers, not so this year. On July 4th we had 36 20+ gamers. So I would think seeing 20+ gamers in the 40s/50s this early in season is no huge concern. But hopefully it won’t jump to the 70’s and beyond over the next few days.
BTW: May 13th last year we had a 36-gamer who reset the following day after picking Pujols (0-4). That little trip back in time brought to you by last year’s blog entries

That is crazy you can track all that. I mean it’s good news for us who don’t seem to be able to get a long streak going but at the same time I was getting a little worried myself. Thanks for sharing. Hopefully us bloggers members can jump up the standings pretty soon. I think this game can be won, but being realistic, I also have a hard time believing it can. It takes so much luck because there is never going to be a 100% pick on any given day. The day it happens will be pretty exciting no matter who does it.

Last year at this time, there were only a handful of people in the low 20’s.

You could get on the 1st page of the overall leaderboard with a streak in the high teens.

So many good picks today. But I’m on-board the Ethier train against a terrible Dempster with no weather concerns. I’ve picked him only twice before today. Maybe I’ll take down a bunch of leaders with me!

    • LaVolpe

      Good luck then 🙂
FYI: 4 days ago, we had 36 with streaks of 20+. Today 57 and another 36 at 19 trying to get to 20.

Morgan(mil) eligible off DL today and has historically hut Hanson very well. Will be up up there or is everyone and their dog just gonna go with Ethier?
I’m going with Jeter tonight. GL all.

I’m going with A-Rod to get to 9.
Highest no selection is on page 6 with a streak of 17, that streak will be back at 0.

Anyone having a problem getting on Gameday right now?

The main MLB.com webpage will barely load, with X’s everywhere.

The same is true for the Scoreboard page.

Not enough from the top dogs though; just 6. The no-hitter-to-be may take out another 6 CWS picks. Also Phillips if no more at bats removes 6 & Granderson already removed 2.

      • LaVolpe

Well, 50 or more 20+ gamers entering tomorrow & a new batch of 19 gamers trying to get to 20. Got exactly 50 that move on today with 15 more still waiting out the late games: M.Young(3), M.Kemp(5), T.Tulowitski(6), A.Soriano(1) picked by 2nd place leader.

    • LaVolpe

3 innings and no hits for LAD. Dempster will throw the 2nd no-hitter tonight. When pigs fly 😦 Go Cubs

      • LaVolpe

Will Zambrano bet the streak buster? Maybe Maholm this weekend series? Who says baseball is boring?

  8. 00liber

Well we’re at 39% reset right now with another 10% still left on the board. Too bad Ethier got his hit today. Could’ve been a massive wipe.
