Beat the Streak Report: Wednesday, May 4

Well, well, well, look who finally jumped on the bandwagon.

Dodgers outfielder/lip-balm pitchman Andre Ethier was the top plantain yesterday for the first time since April 24, advancing 14.5 percent of Streakers one day closer to living out their own personal $5.6 million fantasies.

We’re thinking private island retreat accessible only by helicopter or jet ski, with a fully operational water park on site. Oh, and a 24/7 make-your-own omelet station. That should be doable for under $5 mill, no?

The extra $600K is for a scientist to invent an ice cream that won’t melt while we enjoy it on the white-sand beach of said island. We could then patent the ice cream recipe and lease it out to other online contest winners for use on their own private islands. That’s called “investing.” You’ll learn about it when you’re older, Streakers.

Until then, we offer the steady growth portfolio of blue-chip, bear-market, dividend-payin’ goodness below.

When is the hitting streak going to end? I hope Zambrano pitches a fantastic game today. All hitting streaks must come to an end and it could be the end of Ethier’s today. Yes he hits Zambrano well but he may not get a hit today. Ethier has been extremely luck and today might be the day that is his luck finally runs out. It’s crazy how lucky he has been but that is what happens during a hitting streak. Also I think today is the day for a massive reset. The more people that pick Ethier and if he goes 0 fer it will happen. I just have to hope that it happens today and the hitting streak ends.

Due to his high #s vs Big-Z, Ethier may be very-well picked today. He’s a sinker ball thrower. If CHC can keep Ethier’s attempts within the infield or fly outs, Big-Z can end the streak today. If not, look at: Friday a lefty/lefty matchup but not a great lefty. Saturday a righty/lefty matchup with a very good righty. I’m thinking if not today, then during the PIT series — gut hunch.

      • vinny1979

You seem to have forgotten that the night before he got a hit when it went off the glove of Hawpe. If that would of been anywhere else but Los Angeles it would of been ruled an error.

    • champion_88

He really has not been that lucky.

You do not need 2+ hits a day to avoid luck.

Only 1 day did he get an infield single for a hit.

The rest have been line drives.

Even without the streak, Ethier is still a great pick today. But I said I’d stop picking guys twice in a row, and I agree that the streak is due to end soon — so I’m going with Kemp instead!

Avoid the doubleheader today. Games lock early.
Rain looks likely for the early game; maybe a delay only. Forecast appears to have a good window to get the game in

77 19+ gamers trying to get to or stay at 20+ game streaks today. Of the 93 that tried yesterday, only 58 made it. Good news for low streakers; bad new for some of the high streakers.
Yesterday’s high reset rate helped more in the upcoming
waves of 18/19 gamers by significantly reducing their numbers before they had a chance at 20. The 17-gamer wave is quite large now but they have another 3 days to be thinned out before seeing 20.

Wow, highest no selection is on page 1 with a streak of 23. That is one streak we don’t have to worry about!

    • yanksgiantsdevils33

How do these people with high streaks forget to pick?
Most of those 23 days were early lock days so even a 12:30 lock isn’t en excuse!

@lav, u know the Dodgers are going to NY next to fave the Mets. They have the Pirates starting on Monday.

    • LaVolpe

Sorry, been out yesterday. Yes Vinny, thank you, I know. The lefty & righty I was talking about this weekend are NYM Niese & Young. Thinking PIT can pitch Maholm on the 11th if rotation holds true. That may be the day he loses his streak if not sooner.

      • yanksgiantsdevils33

        Smiley did not appear!
DODGERS RIGHTFIELDER ANDRE ETHIER WAS SCRATCHED FROM THE STARTING LINEUP WITH LEFT ELBOW INFLAMMATION. I swear of he pinch hits and doesn’t get a hit.

  7. baseballgirlie13

I don’t think Mattingly would use Ethier for pinch hitting with a 29 game streak on the line. That wouldn’t be fair to him at all. If he does and Ethier doesn’t get a hit, he will be the most hated man in LA and quite frankly all of MLB.

  8. Vinny1979

He could be the first person used off the bench. He was scratched with elbow inflammation so he could pinch hit.

  9. champion_88

@Vinny: Where do you get the stats and hitting streaks for hitters against certain teams and in certain ballparks?

I find that very helpful, but would like to look at those stats for all teams, not just the hitters that happen to be selected as Picks of the Day or the 2 you pick for potential picks each day.

Are you constructing those on your own or is there a website you are getting this stuff from?

    Thanks!

  10. 00liber

Just in case anyone missed it , Ethier is now in defensively in top of 7, and will get one AB.

    • 00liber

OR is he… wtf. My phone app says that he is in right field taking over from J Gibbons, but i just looked at yahoo boxscore and it does not have him in there.

      • 00liber

Which makes even less sense to me is the fact that the app is powered by yahoo. But I just physically watched Jay Gibbons foul out so MY BAD.

  11. baseballgirlie13

@champion88-go to ESPN and pick a player you want to look at. Then go to their splits and pick the last 3 years. It brings up averages against righties/lefties, ballparks, teams, etc. Pretty good website. Got the info from Vinny myself.
