Beat the Streak Report: Wednesday, May 5

KempBTS480.jpg

It was all sunshine for our streakers on Tuesday, as the seven most popular selections each hit safely to extend the streaks of about 42 percent of the BTS world alone.

The day’s biggest culprit was Aramis Ramirez, who went 0-for-4 to drown the streaks of 2.1 percent of users.

Meanwhile, our two fearless leaders, “dodger_blue” and “olifante,” each extended their runs to 31 games by picking Austin “Danger” Jackson and Ryan Theriot, respectively.

Speaking of which, “dodger_blue” was gracious enough to respond to our inquiries and give us a little information on the man behind the streak.

“dodger_blue,” also known as John Phillips, is an aspiring veterinarian and recent graduate of UCLA who currently lives in Orange County, Calif.

As his user name suggests, he is a Dodgers fan, with his favorite players being Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, James Loney and Russell Martin.

His strategy thus far has been picking players who bat in the top three of their lineups and are on the visiting teams, “so you are guaranteed a potential at-bat in the ninth.”

John has also been looking at lefty-righty matchups and at players who are sizzling at the plate.

One thing that severely stuck a needle in my ego balloon was that John revealed to me that he only read the “Beat the Streak Report” on Monday for the very first time.

Despite my most dogged attempts, I was unsuccessful in trying to hack into our computer database to reset his streak down to two.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to answer us, John, and thanks for the playing Beat the Streak.

Time for Wednesday’s picks.

Oh, hello there …

  • Adrian Gonzalez: .367 AVG (11-for-30) lifetime vs. Rockies starter Aaron Cook
  • Nick Markakis: .344 AVG (11-for-32) lifetime vs. Yankees starter Andy Pettitte
  • Aaron Hill: .400 AVG (4-for-10) lifetime vs. Indians starter Fausto Carmona
  • Matt Kemp: .435 AVG (10-for-23) lifetime vs. Brewers starter Dave Bush
  • Jason Kubel: .643 AVG (9-for-14) lifetime vs. Tigers starter Rick Porcello

Feeling kinda spicy?

  • Willie Bloomquist: .500 AVG (7-for-14) since ’05 vs. White Sox starter Freddy Garcia. Come on, it’s Freddy Garcia! I know you’re thinking about it …
  • Fernando Tatis: .800 AVG (4-for-5) lifetime vs. Reds starter Johnny Cueto. I double dare you.

You’ll thank me later …

  • Paul Konerko: .160 AVG (4-for-25) lifetime vs. Royals starter Brian Bannister
  • Miguel Cabrera: .100 AVG (1-for-10) lifetime vs. Twins starter Kevin Slowey
  • Hanley Ramirez: .100 AVG (1-for-10) lifetime vs. Giants starter Barry Zito

Leaderboard time!

Still riding high behind our top two leaders is “bowl218,” who rode a rejuvenated Alex Gonzalez to an impressive 30-game streak.

DEAR BLOG GUY – wondering if you have a mask and cape to go with that name….. THANKS for the great blogs – if possible, do share a little about yourself as well, as right now you’re the man behind the curtain. At least give us a nickname!! You have us wondering, especially since the awesome improvements to the report. Keep ’em coming!!!!!!!

His name is Dave Feldman. I know this because I read it on the site because they post the report on the site before the blog so I know who it is but he’s great. I have Jeter tonight as I’m hoping he gets a hit to extend me back to two.

I wonder if the winner of this game will get to appear on the CBS Early Show. How sweet would that be? That’s what Wade McGilberry, winner of the $1 million MLB 2K10 prize gets to do. He pitched his perfect game using the Braves’ Kenshin Kawakami.

hey guys, just curious, as of this morning the most regular season games played by any team is 28…how is it possible that two individuals have a streak of 31 and one person has a streak of 30? Did “Beat The Streak” include spring training games? Thanks.

  5. rip2thecompetition

It’s correct. There’s been 31 days of baseball with at least one team playing.

I think the new blog guy is the best too. I love his twisted sense of humor. I have given players blog nicknames and think that he should have a nickname too. I proposing that his nickname be “Grande Amigo” as his is our big friend.
The nickname in spanish is very beisbol!
As a Cub fay, I’m staying close to “home” today with Ryan Theriot in BTS.

31 game hit streak = Ryan Theriot

31 game hit streak = Albert Pujols

30 game hit streak = Dustin Pedroia

28 game hit streak = Albert Pujols

Robinson Cano didn’t get a hit this afternoon, but at least the Yankees won.

Anyways, I’m back to a 0 game hit streak, but I now got an 8 game win streak !

Thinking about picking either Roy Halladay and the Phillies over the Cardinals or Dan Haren and the Diamondbacks over the suck Astros, but not sure yet.

Well despite the high hitting streak I’m going with Theriot as well. vinny thanks for the info on the blog. Grande Amigo you rule – love your sense of humor as well! 🙂

I am going back and forth between martin prado (braves) and pedroia (red sox). i am leaning more towards pedroia. is this a good idea?

Wow, Theriot and ‘Dome knock out half the first page! (including Dodger_Blue). And then there was one.

I guess they cancel the riot at the Wrigley tonight. The promo before the game said it was supposed to be one hot night. Even a guest from Japan was supposed to join in. Good thing I went to a party in LA thrown by Rihanna’s bf.

  15. vinny1979

I have Longoria tonight to have me continue my streak and hopefully get to 3. I have The Twins over the O’s in Survivor to get to 4 and I have Andre Ethier in HR BTS tonight. Good luck to the top guy who is still perfect and the person at 31 today. Today is the hardest day to pick I think. I will update when I’m at work on the new blog.

onehartbeaway… You are in my position. I lost my streak monday (20 games) and yesterday theriot nocked my one streak off the board. NEVER PICK JETER AGAIN
    he is overrated
