Beat the Streak Report: Monday, April 25

Sunday was quite the happy holiday in Streakland, as 13 of your top 15 picks — including each of the top six — managed to hunt down a hit.

Andre Ethier, Robinson Cano and Ryan Braun led the way, joining forces to advance a combined 23.5 percent of your streaks one day closer to 5.6 million buckaroos. Feel free to send your deepest gratitude their way, along with a discounted day-after package of marshmallow Peeps.

Today brings a much higher degree of difficulty. Twelve teams are out of action, and tricky opposing starters like Cliff Lee and Jered Weaver virtually eliminate a couple others from consideration.

The breakfast buffet below looks a lot more like powdered eggs than the make-your-own omelet station we usually provide, but it’s always the short slates that separate the giraffes from the okapis. So go try to find an omelet, giraffes.

OK, that failed miserably. Let’s just roll to …

Monday’s picks

(Make a BTS pick)

Oh, hello there …

Joey Votto.571 AVG (4-for-7) since ’06 vs. Brewers starter Chris Narveson

Kurt Suzuki.435 AVG (10-for-29) since ’06 vs. Angels starter Jered Weaver

• Matt Diaz.500 AVG (11-for-22) since ’06 vs. Nationals starter John Lannan

Omar Infante: .381 AVG (8-for-21) since ’06 vs. Dodgers starter Jon Garland

Alberto Callaspo: .364 AVG (4-for-11) since ’06 vs. A’s starter Gio Gonzalez

Feeling kinda spicy?

Jorge Cantu.500 AVG (7-for-14) since ’06 vs. Braves starter Derek Lowe

Ryan Ludwick.615 AVG (8-for-13) since ’06 vs. Braves starter Derek Lowe

At this point, we can probably consider all Padres hitters Tabasco-level spicy in any matchup.

You’ll thank me later …

• Hanley Ramirez: .188 AVG (3-for-16) since ’06 vs. Dodgers starter Jon Garland

Rickie Weeks: .172 AVG (5-for-29) since ’06 vs. Reds starter Bronson Arroyo

Coco Crisp: .059 AVG (1-for-17) since ’06 vs. Angels starter Jered Weaver

Leaderboard time!

Three Streakers — Gottaweartheshades, Kiss and cleopatravijal — sit tied atop the chart with a season-high 22 games. Andre Ethier remains one game behind at 21. He hasn’t technically been submitting his picks online, but we assume that he’d be selecting himself every day anyway.

I’m picking A-Rod again after the O fer yesterday. He’s facing an unfamiliar pitcher but since I have nothing to lose why not?

  2. schenk015

i know ethier has the longer streak and is the only player getting praised for his streak but alex gordon has hit in 18 straight and i think has been more impressive with his at bats. does anyone else feel like gordon will have a longer streak than ethier because i see it going that way

  3. vinny1979

@schenk, I believe what you said about Gordon. He might have one longer than Ethier as Ethier’s is going to end by the end of this week. The funny thing is Gordon isn’t a pick of the day on Thursday I think it is when he rakes against Carmona.

yea. his gotten the streak so quietly but i guess i just notice it more being a tigers fan. i like to watch the other al central teams and he just looks so comfortable at the plate right now. even when he makes an out his swings look good. your right its the thursday game against carmona and whats really odd is that billy butler is a pick of the day and gordon is 12-23 .522 against carmona while butler is just 9-28 .321 against carmona. that just doesnt make any sense.

Aaron Hill is not in the line-up tonight for the Blue Jays. Gottaweartheshades better hope he doesn’t pinch hit.

  8. LaVolpe

Mr. Shades must have vapor lock on the brain. 3 of last 4 picks have been DL players. He is now in 2nd place tied with 2 others and a day behind the 2 new leaders.

  9. yanksgiantsdevils33

I noticed that a lot of people in the “ny yankees” group who were at 3 all have no selections with most of them having taken Ichiro yesterday.

    • LaVolpe

When you see a streak of 3 with a current “no selection” for today’s game, that is generally an indicator that their jumpstart picks got the 3 game streak. Jumpstart picks stop once a 3-gamer is achieved. They are probably not playing this year, maybe.

      • champion_88

I never used the jumpstart pick, but do they carry over from year to year?

If not, then they had to at least go into the game once this year, so there is some interest for them.

  10. vinny1979

I will say that it’s better to get an early hit than to sweat it out. I’m on to tomorrow with Infante’s game winning hit.
