Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, June 24-26

So remember all that stuff we said about how Thursday would be one of the hardest days of the season for Streak picks?

Well, umm, we may have overstated it a little bit.

As it turned out, five of your top six picks converted — including the top three — advancing a hefty 62.6 percent of all selectors in the process. Jose Reyes was responsible for over half of that total by himself, achieving national hero status with a 2-for-4 effort against the A’s.

The weekend’s full slates presents a less challenging picking environment, but Interleague matchups should always be approached with caution. Play safe, don’t run on the pool deck and feel free to reap the wisdom of …

I set up a group for the Bloggers for the new MLB.com Odyssey contest:

    Group ID: 300
    Group Password: bloggers

I fully maximized the options with 28 people playing, 5 strikes, and 5 people picking per day.

I wanted this game to be different than the old Survivor, so that is why everyone is not picking every day.

I would have went with 9 or 10, if it were an option, but 5 was the largest number you could pick without everyone picking.

The rules say private groups can go up to 30 players, but 28 was the largest number on the drop-down menu.

I’d like to start this as soon as possible.

I think it would be smart to have a 1-day break from when our last participant signs up to when we officially begin though.

  2. champion_88

    7/28 are in so far.

Apparently, I cannot see who has already signed up until the group fills completely, so make sure to keep signing up.

It’s all weekend Champion. The game on Sunday is 10:10 as well and there is never a game that late on Sunday.

    • vinny1979

Every weekend Ken is always a massacre and I think the same will happen this weekend. The leader’s days are numbered and also the second and third place people.

I missed the lock time so I’m stuck with Pujols. Of course there is only 1 game going on now otherwise this would have locked at 4:05.

      • yanksgiantsdevils33

i feel better now since Robinson Cano went O fer (the only other Yankee to go O fer was Pena as a Defensive replacement for A Rod) and so did Josh Hamilton.

      • LaVolpe

Needed some me-time. I’ll probably disappear again next week too. Work’s been a pain & I’ve just been coming home & relaxing which translates, for me, not booting up the system either.

  6. champion_88

We have sort of flatlined for Odyssey membership at 10/28.

We might want to get an e-mail list together to try to get some more members over the next few days.

  7. LaVolpe

Somehow I picked the same as the leader 2 days in a row. Wouldn’t be terribly upset if I get reset tonight.

  8. vinny1979

Ichiro just made the last out in the 7th and barring a miracle by the M’s and if they can load the bases again the leader is done.

Sometimes this game is so frustrating for people that know baseball inside & out. For example, I’m doing pretty good with a season streak rate about 80%; though my longest streak is just 10. My wife on the other hand: barely knows the sport at all; couldn’t tell you whether a team name you gave her was in baseball, football, whatever. How does she make her picks? Honestly I don’t know her selection method; though she does pick just from the “picks o’day”. What’s her streak rate? About 10% less than mine. What’s her current streak? 7 more than me. Ugh! Don’t even get me started with the teasing that goes on 😦

    • LaVolpe

Not saying those that picked Gonzalez were lucky; think he was a great pick today.
But the wife wouldn’t have picked him if he wasn’t a pick o’day ’cause she never heard of him. How many other baseball novices or no-nothings out there got lucky today? You’d think it would even out over the long-haul. No-nothings don’t make it too high in the standings, ever; but I’ll see, as this is her 1st year playing the game & just started this month. A bit sour today I know. After yesterday’s Ichiro failure and her Ellsbury pick homering on 4th AB & Fielder’s last AB hit the day before, the jabbing is actually quite painful. However, if she is so fortunate to make any money on this game, then all is forgiven

  10. Kenfucious

As discussed, this a primarily a game of luck. You can study matchups, general confidence, weather reports, wind direction, or player biorhythms ad nauseum.

But we end up seeing late scratches or rests, pitchers getting pulled early for relievers with less-suitable matchups for your pick, rain-shortened games, injuries, Matt Kemps, intentional walks, safe on errors, etc etc. Pick and hope, is all we can do. Knowing the game will slightly increase your odds, but it’s marginal.

    • LaVolpe

But knowing the game is what makes it frustrating. I about as much of cricket as my wife does baseball. If I were in some cricket BTS type of game and lost streaks, I can tell you I wouldn’t mind nearly as much ’cause I didn’t know what I was doing in the first place. Anyway; that’s kinda what I was getting to about this game being frustrating
