Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, August 20-22

August 20-22

The referee is stepping in!

He’s stopping the fight — there’s the bell. This one’s over, folks!

James Loney went 0-for-4 last night against Jorge De La Rosa and Matt Reynolds, ending Geoff Croke’s bid for $3,000,000 and Beat the Streak immortality at 43 games.

“Gfc2112” will have to settle for a tie with Dick George atop the season leaderboard.

Who told him to take Loney, anyway?

What? The Dodgers first baseman headlined yesterday’s Beat the Streak Report? Oh, um…awkward.

Let’s just move on.

Thursday was a rough slate for gamers overall, as the three most popular options — Victor MartinezJosh Hamilton and Delmon Young — went a combined 0-for-11 and ended 20.4 percent of all streaks.

Let’s give Geoff one more round of applause for his impressive ride. Hopefully he won’t spend too much time dwelling on what could have been, had he just picked Miguel Cabrera.

Or Vlad Guerrero.

Or Robinson Cano.

Oh, hello there …

Geoff Croke just keeps Rolen along.

Our leader, a.k.a. “gfc2112,” is sitting pretty at 43 games after a 1-for-5 performance by the Reds third baseman last night at Arizona.

Was the .285 career hitter a slightly risky pick? Sure — he wasn’t among Wednesday’s 15 most popular selections.

But he came into the game with seven hits in his last 11 at-bats, and I can’t ever fault a streaker for picking against Rodrigo Lopez and a D-backs relief corps that close couldn’t the bullpen door, let alone a game.

Anyway, the popular picks also panned out yesterday, with 12 of the 13 most-used players advancing gamers — if you count Joey Votto and Alex Rodriguez receiving the ol’ did-not-play pass.

Vlad Guerrero and Albert Pujols led the way, each going 1-for-4 to help a combined 16.6 percent of players.

Time for Thursday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

James Loney: .533 AVG (8-for-15) lifetime vs. Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa

Croke has pulled away from the pack Secretariat style, but “Jeabullseye” keeps chugging along in second place at 28 games.

“rtaylor2001” and “warriorcub” remain tied for third two games back.

They’ll to need to kick their picking skills into high gear to make up that 15-game gap. I recommend searching the internet for BTS cheat codes. The one that starts with A, B, left trigger usually works.

Or not.

Another day, another correct pick for our leader, Geoff Croke (“gfc2112”).

After a 1-for-4 Hanley Ramirez performance, Geoff’s streak is at 42 games — just 15 short of the $3,000,000 grand prize.

The Marlins shortstop advanced 6.3 percent of all streakers as yesterday’s third-most selected player.

Top pick Ichiro Suzuki also came through for 13.7 percent of you, but Miguel Cabrera ended dreams of fame and fortune for many.

Special shout out to “rtaylor2001”, who lived to see a 25-gamer after rolling with the hot-and-spicy Omar Infante last night.

Beat the Streak Report: Tuesday, August 17

480x270_Polanco.jpg

And the beat goes on.

An Ichiro Suzuki fourth-inning single catapulted Geoff Croke (“gfc2112”) to a 41-game streak.

For those scoring at home but don’t know how, this means two things:

(1) Croke is only a 16-game streak away from $3,000,000.

(2) Croke is only a three-game streak away from displacing the oh-so-lovable Dick George and (likely) taking home $10,000.

Glad I could clear that up.

And don’t think I forgot about the rest of you streakers, as Ichiro’s
single also pressed the forward button on 25.8 percent of the entire
population.

I’d never forget about the rest of you guys. Come on!

The first commandment of streakdom is that all streaks are created equal.

Just, ya know, some are more equal than others.

Time for Tuesday’s picks

Oh, hello there …

? Placido Polanco: .800 AVG (8-for-10) since ’05 vs. Giants starter Barry Zito

“Jeabullseye” now stands alone in second place after successfully riding Miguel Cabrera to a 26-game streak.

“Jeabullseye” is only 31 games away from taking home the $3,000,000.

Wait, what’s that?

Oh, sorry, let me try that again.

“Jeabullseye” is only 31 games away and needs Croke to spontaneously combust in order to take home the $3,000,000.

Much better.

We got ourselves a ballgame.

Geoff Croke rode the gravy train all weeekend long, extending his streak
to 40 games after Troy Tulowitzki’s mammoth performance Sunday
afternoon.

Our leader is now a mere 17 games away from immortality and a shoe box
full of cash, and is only four games away from unseating Dick George as
the season overall leader and (likely) becoming $10,000 richer.

Can ya feel that? That little BTS tingle you have inside?

No? Just me? OK, then …

“gllc2112” extended his streak to 37 games after Andre Ethier’s fruitful night at the yard.

“gllc2112″‘s name is Geoffrey Croke.

I know this because he told me.

That’s right, our current knight and shining armor/conch holder/daddy
mac/king of the castle/bee’s knees/Barefoot Contessa has decided to
reveal himself to me. And he seems like a pretty cool guy.

Instead of summarizing his response to my e-mail, I figured I’d let his artistic side fly and copy paste all his wisdom.

For what it’s worth, I sic’d the daylights out of this:

I have been reading your blog, so I knew this e-mail was coming. Do me a favor and keep that voodoo doll hidden.

I cant believe you didn’t like my Jayson Heyward pick.

My name is Geoffrey Croke. I am currently unemployed. I lost my job
last June, so $3,000,000 would be nice. I live in Southampton, NY. A
small summer resort area on the east end of Long Island. (born and
raised here) I am a Met fan, so it hasn’t been too much fun for the
past couple of years. This is actually my first year playing Beat the
Streak, and now many of my friends play also. My strategy is simple,
find a batter who is hot against the starter that day. I just hope
that responding to this e-mail isn’t the kiss of death and I get to talk
to you again in 3 weeks.

Thanks, Geoff

No, thank you, Geoff.

May your hits be bountiful and may you rule Streakland until kingdom come.

And Stephen Drew makes 36.

The beat goes on for “gfc2112”, as our red-hot leader rode Drew’s solo
blast to a 36-game streak. The next 21 days will hopefully be quite the
exciting time in Streakland, as users have quietly watched their dreams
of gold-plated ponies and private islands dim by the day.

Will “gfc2112” have the sheer will and determination to keep this party going and supplant Mr. BTS, Dick George, in the process?

Will “gfc2112” flashdance with fate and answer the e-mail I just sent him?

Only time will tell.

Oh, I’d also like to give a shoutout to “ponyforkeana” for taking the bull by the horns and providing the BTS blog world with all the streak knowledge and goodness one needs with his little countdown posted in the comments.

Beat the Streak Report: Wednesday, August 11

480x270_Zimmerman.gif

A lightning-round version of the Beat the Streak Report today, as early meetings plus early games equaled lost time.

The big news stemming from Tuesday was that our leader, “gfc2112”, rode
Joe Mauer to a 35-game streak, becoming the eighth BTSer to reach that
mark for the year. And the eighth who will soon be haunted by an e-mail
from yours truly.

With lock time already passed, we know that “gfc2112” has selected
Stephen Drew for Wednesday, as the D-backs face off against Dave Bush
and the Brewers at 8:10 PM eastern time.

And with that …

Time for Wednesday’s picks:

Oh, hello there …

Beat the Streak Report: Tuesday, August 10

480x270_Mauer.gif

It was Beat the Streak retro edition on Monday, as long-time BTS
stalwarts Albert Pujols, Derek Jeter and Ichiro Suzuki were the day’s
most popular picks and each hit safely, combining to extend the streaks
of 26.6 percent of the population worldwide.

This is all peachy keen and (somewhat) normal.

What isn’t normal is that Jason Heyward was our leader’s — “gfc2112” — pick of the day.

Now, Heyward went 1-for-3 and extended our leader’s streak to a stellar 34 games. His hit was even a homer to boot.

But, this selection of Heyward is a little strange. And by strange, I really mean positively insane.

Heyward entered Monday’s game hitting .170 while in the midst of an 8-for-47 slump dating back to July 27.

And to put more molded carrots in this tapioca pudding, the J-Hey kid had gone hitless in seven of his previous 13 games.

I’m not exactly sure what was going through “gfc2112″‘s hit-seeking
noggin, and, yeah, obviously it paid off, and, double yeah, I fully
recognize I look like Donkeylips from “Salute Your Shorts” critiquing
Usain Bolt’s form in the 100 meter here with only a 10-game career-high
streak to my name, but this is too much.

And with that …

Time for Tuesday’s Picks:

Oh, hello there …

? Joe Mauer: .379 AVG (11-for-29) lifetime vs. White Sox starter Freddy Garcia

? Ichiro Suzuki: .400 AVG (6-for-15) lifetime vs. Athletics starter Brett Anderson

? David Ortiz: .462 AVG (6-for-13) lifetime vs. Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero

? James Loney: .600 AVG (6-for-10) lifetime vs. Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick

Beat the Streak Report: Monday, August 9

Markakis480BTS.jpg

And I’m back.

I’d like to thank Ian for pinch-hitting for me on Friday, and while it
wasn’t quite an African Safari, I was stuck in traffic for four hours
near Scranton, Pennsylvania around midnight last night. Which is even
more fun than it sounds.

Anyway, it was a pretty solid Sunday all around in Streakland, as
Robinson Cano, Joe Mauer, Adrian Beltre, Ichiro Suzuki, Nick Markakis
and Miguel Cabrera each laced hits to keep the gravy train going for
38.5 percent of the galaxy.

My condolences to those 3.4 percent who selected Delmon Young and are now officially out of the running for the $3,000,000.

But, alas, all is not lost for you fine folks. Even though you won’t be
closing out the campaign a BTS legend, reading books about yourself and
books about books about yourself, you still have time to win $10,000 and
beat out the ineffable name — Dick George — and his 43-game streak.

So there’s that.

Time for Monday’s Picks:

Oh, hello there …

? Nick Markakis: .500 AVG (6-for-12) since ’05 vs. White Sox starter Edwin Jackson

? Derek Jeter: .333 AVG (10-for-30) lifetime vs. Red Sox starter Jon Lester

? Evan Longoria: .500 AVG (3-for-6) lifetime vs. Tigers starter Armando Galarraga

Right in the thick of the hunt for each of hour mega grand prizes is
“gfc2112”, who eschewed Ian’s not-so sagacious advice from Friday and
rode non-blue-chipper Clint Barmes to a 33-game streak.

Shows how much Ian knows.
