Beat the Streak Report: Wednesday, April 20

Can we get a sad trombone?

Whah, whahhh, whahhhhhhh.

That pretty much sums up yesterday’s results, as seven of your top eight selections either rode the 0-fer train back to Zero Town or took a pass due to inclement weather conditions.

Robinson Cano was the lone beacon of light amidst the cruel, hitless darkness, eking out a 1-for-5 against Kyle Drabek and the Blue Jays to save 3.1 percent of your hopes and dreams.

More than 10 percent of all Streakers put their eggs into Joey Votto‘s seemingly well-padded basket, only to watch the Reds slugger remove said eggs, crack them into a pan with a pinch of salt and a dollop sour cream and then enjoy himself a heaping helping of scrambled streaks.

Wait, did we just give away the secret ingredient to the creamiest, fluffiest scrambled streaks you’ll ever eat? Eh, you’ll never figure out exactly how much a dollop is anyway.

Mind wandering… A palindrome is a word that is read the same way forward or backward, i.e., radar, madam, racecar. dollop spelled in lower case is read the same way if it is rotated 180 degrees. Wonder if there is a term for such a category of words.

  2. Dave55

0-5 followed by an 0-1. Brutal! Don’t know why Carlos Ruiz was pulled but he is back in the lineup today. Ibanez is resting today, btw.
Anyway, trying to start again with Martin Prado. GL all!

  3. vinny1979

Tulo disappointed me last night. Was hitting Sanchez before last night but that is what happens. Hoping to start again today myself.

  4. baseballgirlie13

Wow, I can’t believe Ryan Brain is not in the top 15. I know he is facing Cliff Lee but he has been hotter then anyone this year. I should have gone with him as he singled in his first at bat. He is hitting extremely well right now.

    • Dave55

Braun just got a hit, as did Prince, who has good career numbers against Lee. Both were tempting picks but it being Cliff Lee I decided to stay away.

  5. vinny1979

@Dave, I had Braun before I knew who was pitching last week but than I decided to change when I saw it was Lee pitching today.

Update from last night’s posts Brian McCann went 2 for 3 and Jacoby Ellsbury had a pinch hit O fer. In all 3 of the 5 (Vladimir Guerrero, Ben Zobrist and McCann hit safely getting 2 hits apiece. A new era indeed is upon us x3 or better yet x6.

  8. Dave55

Votto had back-to-back-to-back 0-fers just twice last season, so that is probably a safe pick (alhtough one of those streaks came in April).

    • LaVolpe

I went with Votto for a couple reasons: odds of playing in his home field: high, hitting ability: high, opposing pitcher quality: low, my streak: 1

  9. yanksgiantsdevils33

The Nationals/Cardinals and Padres/Cubs have double headers.
I see that Albert Pujols is among the top 15 despite playing in a double header. He just homered in the 3rd so he is good for Game 1. Colby Rasmus has been choses by a 17 game streak and Matt Holliday has been spotted as high as 13. Holliday is good for game 1 as well, but Rasmus is 0 for 2.

    • yanksgiantsdevils33

Lance Berkman has been picked as high as 15, Ryan Theriot at 12 and Albert Pujols highest selection is 13. Theriot has 2 hits in the 1st game while Berkman is still O fer.
I don’t see any Nationals, Padres or Cubs taken though.

      • yanksgiantsdevils33

Rasmus and Berkman have each gotten a hit so all 5 Cardinals picks are alive going into Game 2.

  10. 00liber

Ichiro and Miggy have both gotten hits now. And just about everyone playingin STL/WASH has hits in first game. Same can’t be said about Cubs/Pads. Can Votto come through or will he disappoint again?

  11. LaVolpe

Hmmm, 2nd place leader picked Wright for tonite. Zero for last 16 official ABs. Either he knows something or is making a big mistake.

      • LaVolpe

If I were going to pick Wright it may be tomorrow’s game. Wright hits very well against lefties and tomorrow’s lefty isn’t that good. But Wright is also taking a lot of walks lately too. I’ll wait for him to start a steak of his own before I assume too much risk on him

  12. Dave55

So the hosts of Intentional Talk on MLB Network are making BTS picks. Both are at zero (sound familiar?) with Kevin Millar picking Adam Jones and Chris Rose going with R. Cano. Given their records it is probably just as well that picks already have locked.

  13. baseballgirlie13

Up to 6 with Ichiro singling for me. Thinking of Michael Brantley of the Indians tomorrow to get me to 7. He’s been on fire lately and bats lead-off, should get 5 PA’s.

  14. baseballgirlie13

Haha, right after I wrote that I looked up the game tonight and he is batting 7th. Not sure why, as he was 3-5 last night in the lead-off spot. Still thinking of going with him though.

  15. Nymets1979

As hot as he may be, I couldn’t pick him. I’m going with someone that probably few would pick, but he’s been on fire lately.

  16. 00liber

Well Jeter and A-Rod just said F U to streakworld. pending a jays rally it’s not looking good if you have either of them.

  17. 00liber

And with that double by Either, all 4 of our top2500 bloggers move on to tomorrow.

Also, Pujols just flied out in bottom of 7th. Stl up 5-3.

  18. yanksgiantsdevils33

I am not a fan of picking from a double header because there a 2 chances to be O fered and if the selected player gets hits in both games the reward is the same as getting a hit in a non doubleheader, your streak increases by 1. However I would much rather pick a player in a double header (accidentally or on purpose) that gets hits in both games then an O fer in a single game. For example 3 of the 5 Cardinals picked got hits in both games while my pick (Jeter) went O fer in his one game. With that being said I just discovered that my ranking is the putrid 10000+.
