Beat the Streak Report: Wednesday, April 27

Matt Kemp has been one of the season’s most dangerous rakebots, delighting Dodgers fans, Rihanna haters and BTS pickers alike with his nightly heroism in the batter’s box.

The multitalented jet-ski racer/destroyer of baseballs disappointed on Tuesday, however, snapping a modest six-game hit streak with an 0-for-4 against the Marlins and resetting the odometer on 8.8 percent of all streaks.

Trust us, Streakers, this one hurts. We were working on a little season-high run of our own, and Chris Volstad looked like a pretty tasty matchup. That dude hands out hits like they’re mini American flags at a Fourth of July parade.

Three hours later: Strikeout, flyout, popout, groundout. Cool! He hit for the out cycle! (Note: not cool at all).

At least those of you who lost with Kemp can take solace in the fact that your fellow Streakers nailed the next six most popular choices. Nope, no solace provided at all. We remain unsolsified. Or is it unsolacized?

The lesson, as always: Pick Ethier.

Rain will PLAGUE Wednesdays games even worse than we’ve seen recently.

    TB/MIN (60%), COL/CHC (80%), KC/CLE (100%), SEA/DET (95%), and SF/PIT (65%) are all at risk. There’s a lesser chance for LAD/FLA, CWS/NYY, NYM/WAS, and BOS/BAL.

Ethier? Guesstimates on when he’ll go 0-fer? My guess will be during the SD series. Why? I think a divisional game will treat him with more fear/respect than non-divisional. Throw in a good lefty pitcher and maybe Friday is the day: 0-2 with 2 walks maybe. Just a guess

The ex-leader that picks DL players may want to fill the next 9 days with Casey Blake. Per rotoworld he’s headed for the DL

I originally had Blake picked for yesterday but switched to Carroll. Let’s see if Tony Gwynn, Jr does any better today. I’m sticking with the Dodgers since the game is being televised this afternoon and will make the game more interesting to me. Avoiding Ethier since he is 0-6 against Sanchez. Also, Gwynn is leading off and will have maximum ABs.

So yesterday I managed to convince my brother in law to change his pick to Berkman from ROBO-Kemp and it worked out for him. Did I get a hit, noooo.
But I guess I was doomed from the start thinking I had Theriot in and actually had Rasmus.
Anyways Im going with the Vottobot tonight. Lefty-Righty matchup, hits well vs Yovani and 0-fer last night.

I’m going with Robinson Cano to get to 3.
Highest No selection page 1 with a streak of 19 heading right back to 0.

I was thinking of Cano also, but his splits against lefties had me concerned. Will Buehrle be the good pitcher like 3 games ago (allowed just 2 hits) or the bad pitcher seen in last 2 games (allowing avg of 9 hits)?

    • LaVolpe

The only concern I had about Berkman is that he may sit against lefties at times. If this was a day game after nite game, I’d say he definitely would sit. But being a nite game, LaRussa will probably play him.

Mark, you’re scaring me 🙂 For the last 3 days, we’ve both picked the same games & in two of those the same players. Though I chickened out yesterday & changed from Holliday to Cano. But let the luck continue… For me, 3 days, 3 1st AB hits

    • champion_88

I think your batting average overall is a better measure of if you are making smart picks or not.

You have many more data points to work with (more AB’s than days) and a different distribution does not affect the batting average.

      • LaVolpe

IMO, I think getting hits off the starter is a better measure. No one makes picks thinking no hits off the starter but instead, getting 1 or 2 hits off the relievers. I have a a very low percentage of 1st hit off relievers

  8. gpearson17

Hey, I just got a first-inning hit myself from Polanco. That sure beats the no-inning hit I got from Kemp yesterday…

  9. LaVolpe

Tulo pickers need to wait another day. CHC/COL PPD and no doubleheader tomorrow for that game but there is one for another game.

      • yanksgiantsdevils33

I was pinched twice last year, once I was at 3 and Pudge hit a Sac fly in the 8th as a Nat, but the other I was at 9 and the now retired Manny Ramirez pinch hit in the 5th as a Dodger and struck out. Despite being mid game he was removed and there were no more chances. I was so pissed!

      • champion_88

There was a time like that for Manny last year that I remember, but it was in the 7th Inning.

He got ejected for arguing on a called 3rd strike.

  10. LaVolpe

And the BTS gods rested; no major sacrifices. Should be a really low reset rate when all the games are in
