Beat the Streak Report: Weekend, May 13-15
Happy Hollidays to the 17.4 percent of you who rolled with Cardinals outfielder Matt last night, as he victimized Cubs starter Casey Coleman for a second-inning long ball and then added a single off reliever Justin Berg for good measure.
You know, just in case our system didn’t register the dinger or something. Don’t worry, Matt, we’re on top of it. Spread those knocks out and you’ll make a lot of friends around here.
Current leader thesantos2006 opted for Holliday’s teammate Albert Pujols, and received a sixth-inning single to push his streak to 28 games.
Best of luck to you over the weekend, Mr. Santos — or is it Mr. Thesantos? You’re one day from crossing over the halfway mark to $5.6 million and just two correct selections from tying our season leader. Oh, and one incorrect pick from winning absolutely nothing. No pressure, though.
Friday bonus video: Hey look, it’s that guy who wrote the BTS Report last year!

Beat the Streak Report: Thursday, May 12
At 3-0 in the BTS vs. Colbert challenge, we believe our point has been made. It’s possible that we haven’t seen the last of the once — and future? — presidential candidate around these parts, so check back in a few weeks for an update on that front.
We now return to your regularly scheduled Streak Report:
Last night left patrons at the Streakland Diner wanting just a little more.
Mark Teixeira (1-for-4) and Ichiro Suzuki (2-for-5) brought home the bacon for 26 percent of all pickers, and fellow top-5 selections Andre Ethier (1-for-4) and Joey Votto (2-for-4) buttered toast for an additional 8.8 percent, so the meal was off to a good start.
But Troy Tulowitzki and Adam Lind failed to show up with eggs and pancakes — as we had previously agreed upon — due to 0-for-0 passes.
Not that we couldn’t survive on bacon and buttered toast, but that pair should know breakfast — no matter when you eat it — is always the most important meal of the day.
Without that satisfying sustenance of scrambled goodness piled high atop an even higher stack of fluffy flapjacks, it might be tough to make …

Challenge: If Stephen Colbert can make more correct Beat the Streak picks than the BTS Report in a Monday-Sunday period, he gets to run the official Twitter account of Major League Baseball — @MLB — for 24 hours.
Someone call stadium security, because we’ve got a streaker on the loose.
Oh, and that streaker is us. Yeah, kiddies, Albert Pujols banged out four hits yesterday against the Cubs, meaning that the Report is officially 2-0 in the Colbert Challenge.
Did we drop trou and go for a celebratory au naturel jaunt around the neighborhood after Big Al’s first-inning single off Carlos Zambrano? Well, that’s for us to know, and you to find out … possibly from the crime notes of our local newspaper.
As for Mr. Colbert, he continues to sit idle. Like many a college student on summer vacation, he impassively surveys the fun and games below from his perch atop the lifeguard chair. Only the occasional whistle twirl signals any life at all behind the aviators. Is he just bored, or does he think he actually belongs up there above the fray? Take the plunge, Stephen — the water couldn’t be nicer.
Well, we guess it could be if you weren’t already down 2-0.

Ethier, Ethier, Ethier. We’re a little tired of Andre the Giant, but Streakland apparently is not. Challenge: If Stephen Colbert can make more correct Beat the Streak picks than the BTS Report in a Monday-Sunday period, he gets to run the official Twitter account of Major League Baseball — @MLB — for a full 24-hour span.
Ever the crafty leader, Stephen Colbert opted for a strategy of isolationism in Day 1 of our challenge. Rather than engage in any rabble-rousing outside the borders of his empire, he sat tight and offered no response — or BTS selection.
Well, we took AP history many moons ago, but we’re well aware of the counter-measure to this high-stakes stall tactic: brinksmanship. Escalate the situation until @StephenAtHome has no choice but to address it.
Did brinksmanship during the Cold War lead to the Bay of Pigs debacle? Maybe. Would that make us the JFK of this scenario? Oh, stop it! Yes, the rakish good looks … we get that all the time.
Either way, we will continue to increase tensions until a resolution is reached. Streakers: let the man know that there will be no peace until he makes a selection. Remember, the rules are simple: if Colbert can out-pick us over one week, @MLB is his to run for a day. No tricks, no catch.
We have a head start after converting with Andre Ethier yesterday, but there’s plenty of time for Colbert Nation to scramble the jets.

Today’s word, Streakers, is CHALLENGE.
… As in, America has never faced one she couldn’t overcome.
… As in, I bet you can’t eat those six hot dogs in two minutes.
… As in, the BTS Report is throwing down its red, white and blue batting glove and preparing for fisticuffs.
In the far corner: Mr. Stephen Colbert — host of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, self-proclaimed leader of Colbert Nation, 2008 presidential candidate and inspiration for one of the most American substances to ever grace a 473-milliliter carton.
Here’s the deal, Steve-O: Starting today, we’ll be making a daily Colbert Challenge pick — one player per day who we’d risk all our marbles, pogs and Pokemon cards on. You do the same. We’ll go head to head for seven days, resetting every Monday.
Can you beat us? Unlikely. But just to make things interesting, we’re offering up a little incentive. Post a better record over any one week, and the keys to the social media juggernaut known as @MLB are yours for a day.
Seven days, seven picks, Colbert. You beat us, and you get 24 hours with @MLB‘s 1.2 million followers. You want to tweet about baseball? Go ahead. You want to tweet about politics? Be our guest. You want to tweet out Thor 3D spoliers? Well, start making picks.
We’re locking in Andre Ethier for today. Streakers, encourage Stephen to make his pick known before lock time at 7 p.m.

Finally, Andre Ethier has company. Fearless BTS leader jngmz733 tied the Fartful Dodger at 29 games yesterday, gracias to Albert Pujols‘ 3-for-3 effort against Josh Johnson and the Marlins.
Fearless BTS leader jngmz733 may or may not have later held the A’s to one run over 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision at the Oakland Coliseum. The investigation is still pending. Police line, do not cross!
Prince Albert wasn’t among your top 15 selections yesterday, which makes sense because only a doofus prescient genius would pick against JJ. At Sun Life Stadium. With a right-handed batter. Who came into the game batting .233.
Greatest hitter of his generation or not, that’s the kind of recklessness that sends even experienced Streakers tumbling down the steep, slippery slope of Mt. 30 Games. The air gets thin up here, folks. No need for an added degree of difficulty.

Well, well, well, look who finally jumped on the bandwagon.
Dodgers outfielder/lip-balm pitchman Andre Ethier was the top plantain yesterday for the first time since April 24, advancing 14.5 percent of Streakers one day closer to living out their own personal $5.6 million fantasies.
We’re thinking private island retreat accessible only by helicopter or jet ski, with a fully operational water park on site. Oh, and a 24/7 make-your-own omelet station. That should be doable for under $5 mill, no?
The extra $600K is for a scientist to invent an ice cream that won’t melt while we enjoy it on the white-sand beach of said island. We could then patent the ice cream recipe and lease it out to other online contest winners for use on their own private islands. That’s called “investing.” You’ll learn about it when you’re older, Streakers.
Until then, we offer the steady growth portfolio of blue-chip, bear-market, dividend-payin’ goodness below.

Andre Ethier‘s National League Destruction Tour 2011 reached 27 games over the weekend, and plenty of you Streakers made it out for a show and an overpriced T-shirt along the way.
The Dodgers outfielder toasted the Pop Tarts for 7.2 percent of all gamers with a 1-for-3 yesterday, second only to Matt Holliday‘s 13.2 percent approval rate.
Ethier is now one contest clear of the current BTS leader, a gap that likely won’t be narrowed — barring a world-altering 0-fer — until L.A. takes a bye to recharge and refuel on Thursday. Until then, the show rolls on. Next potential victim: Cubs starter James Russell.
